We rode our sidecars deep into the Hatfield-McCoy Trails in southern West Virginia and explored the coal-mining towns that are tucked down in the hollers. We grew up riding in the dirt, but this rocky terrain provided a new challenge with steep inclines and some risky traversing.
The Ural Gear Up Sahara (the tan model in the video) is two-wheel drive and handled the hills like a champ. The Ural cT (orange model) is one-wheel drive, so it required a bit more throttle and weight distribution, but the knobby tires and torquey engine rose to the task.
----
A big thanks goes to those who help support our travels:
URAL MOTORCYCLES | www.imz-ural.com
We rode the Gear Up Sahara and cT models in this video, fitted with many Ural accessories. These things are rugged, fun and can carry all of our equipment and supplies with room to spare.
SENA Motorcycle Bluetooth Devices | www.sena.com
The dialogue and many clips in this video were captured by our helmet-mounted Sena 10C camera & communication systems. The clear conversation from helmet to helmet kept us both on the same page.
HEIDENAU TIRES | www.heidenautires.com
We ran the K37 tires on the 2WD Gear Up and the K67 tires on the 1WD cT; they did incredible and provided the confidence to tackle the loose, rutted, and slippery surfaces.
OUTER LIMIT SUPPLY | www.outerlimitsupply.com
The bright orange box you see mounted to the orange sidecar is the well-stocked, waterproof and crushproof OLS Day Tripper Series first aid kit.

I found the FI version use more fuel than my 1500cc 6 cylinder Goldwing with a double sidecar. (250-270 ks on 17-18 ltrs at 110kph) that and the slower highway speed. (110kph for 6 hours for me to leave my home to the City. Also no water cooling a slight concern... so I will keep my old Wing. @@johnnyst.4372

Nice to see a Gear Up & a CT on the same ride. It sure dispels a LOT of biased thinking about what a CT with good rubber (& rider) can do. This is the kind of ride THIS old man can do (2016 GU Ambassador)! My days of radical riding is in my rear view mirror, and I just tell the youngsters to “Wait for this old man at the intersection!” If there are any old guys/gals out there on these (We are a minority out there!) in Western Mass that want to form a club (or if you know of one), let me know! Finally! I have been searching for Ural videos for three weeks, looking for something that is similar to what I want and like to ride. I traded a KTM 690 for a 2012 Ural T 1wd. I was hoping I could take it to places just like this! What a relief. The orange one is 1wd correct? Also to see guys standing on the pegs. A little air beneath the tires. Ha! Have you guys made any other videos? This one was fantastic. Thanks!

Congrats on the Ural purchase. Yes, the orange bike is a 2016 1wd cT with knobbies installed (necessary for off-roading in the wet or loose stuff). We've got some other Ural-related vids here on our KZfaq channel, click on our handle and you'll see several. Have fun out there!

Jeff Holaday I have a CT, and have ridden these sorta trails with the stock K28 tires. They do amazing on gravel, but it’s drift city in mud. I’ve never gotten stuck, you just have to commit and know how it’s going to react. Tons of fun off road, but I’ve been through a final drive and two output shafts from this kinda riding . .

@goodsparkgarage
@goodsparkgarage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sarah. Our bikes are holding up quite well. While we do occasionally off-road them, most miles are logged on the pavement. These kinds of trails will put the hurt on a lot of vehicles! We check bolts and nuts during and after off-roading (which we've had to do with buggies, go-karts, dirt bikes, and any vehicle that we've taken thru the rough stuff). Even when riding aggressive, we try to be careful when it comes to the mechanical aspects of the rigs. We've seen people unnecessarily burn up their clutch or bang the gears in a panic, rather than using an alternative approach to help preserve the equipment. So far, so good!

I'm ready to buy! I've been flirting with the idea for a while. Do you run into many trails you can't tackle because the sidecar makes the bike too wide?
@goodsparkgarage
@goodsparkgarage 6 жыл бұрын
Go for it! It's a blast. Yeah, we've ridden in tighter woods, but it's just not as fun as these kinds of trails. When you don't have to constantly try to thread the needle it's much more enjoyable on these machines...and you don't worry as much about beating up your sidecar fender. :)

Cool trails. I’d been keeping an ear out for banjo music if it were me. Maybe I’ve just seen “deliverance” too many times? What year models are those bikes? Mine is a 2011 and it won’t go like these two.
@goodsparkgarage
@goodsparkgarage 3 жыл бұрын
The rigs in the vid are 2016 models (fuel injected). We've had our 2010 carb'd model out in the rough stuff and it does relatively well, but only when we ran knobbies. The stock street-oriented tires don't offer much grip in loose or slippery trail conditions.
@kevinmccarley7121

Enjoyed the video! So, is it better to load the sidecar with ballast, to maintain left-right CG, or run it empty to reduce weight? And how were the Urals on the road sections? Thanks!
@goodsparkgarage
@goodsparkgarage Жыл бұрын
Glad you dig the vid! On this trip, we did not add weight in the sidecar. For someone not familiar with sidecar riding, some weight would provide a bit more confidence (we've heard some people using 100+lb sandbags). That would settle it down and make the sidecar feel more planted. After many hours of riding sidecar motorcycles, you start to anticipate when and where to place your body as a counterweight. On these steep hills, less weight probably helped the 41hp powerplants tackle the terrain a little easier. As for road riding, these Urals do great. If they're set up correctly, it's smooth sailing. Of course, a rookie needs to watch the right-turns at speed to be sure the rising sidecar doesn't scare 'em into swerving across the centerline. With some time in the saddle, you'll be able to adapt to its mannerisms just fine (see our video, "How to Ride a Sidecar Motorcycle: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obRzd6RnnJ-6kqc.html). Thanks for tuning in!

Thanks, man. The Ural Gear Up Sahara (the tan model in the video) used two-wheel drive for most of the offroading clips. The Ural cT (orange model) is one-wheel drive, so it required a bit more throttle and weight distribution, but the knobby tires and torquey engine rose to the task.

What does cleaning and maintenance look like after something like this
@goodsparkgarage
@goodsparkgarage Жыл бұрын
Similar to ATVs or dirtbikes that get caked in mud - it requires some time to blast off, then wash again, then wash a bit more if you want to get it back to spotless. There are lots of nooks and crannies (joints, brake systems, engine fins, etc.) Of course, after riding in the rocky stuff, it's good to check bolts and connections, but we didn't have any concerning issues outside of some scrapes and nicks from the loose, rutty, rocky terrain. In the end, this muddy ride was worth the clean-up!

@@goodsparkgarage the 1 wd one it made it through everything the 2 wheel drive bike did? do you think the 2wd is needed? intersting that the 1wd model did good on those trails!
@goodsparkgarage
@goodsparkgarage 4 жыл бұрын
@@dannymcguiness3103 Hi, Danny. Yes, with the knobbie tires installed on the 1WD, it did great in this particular terrain. Of course, it helped to have some offroad riding experience that informs you when to weight the drive wheel, when to keep momentum, when to lug the engine, etc. To answer your question on the 2wd being 'needed', we would say the 2wd provides much more confidence. In these conditions, there were hills and drop-offs that can be intimidating, the extra traction on that outside wheel really made a difference, which makes for a less white-knuckle approach. Now, if 1wd is all you have, we've made our Urals go a lot of places people might be surprised to see!
