Unspecified They're not talking about the actor (Kelsey Grammer), they're talking about the character (Sideshow Bob). In the Simpsons, Sideshow Bob was Krusty's silent sideshow act before Sideshow Mel, and he resented Krusty wasting his talents on silly slapstick.

I think that's why he's supposed to be such an angry guy. He's a really talented classically trained performer who due to unknown circumstances is a sidekick on a kid's show where he's regularly humiliated. Bart just caused him to snap, which is why he has such an irrational hatred of him.

Bob was simply pushed too far by Krusty for several years. Underneath Bob is a boring and polite person. He is just filled with to much rage to be contained anymore. All men can become monsters if tormented enough. Krusty is a monster himself, he's just one of those fortunate enough to be under the protection of hollywood, and Bart. It's kinda ironic that Krusty didn't stay in prison given all of the other things they found out about Krusty after the robbery charges. I feel like his lawyers were able to sweep the rest of the stuff under the rug after Bart proved Krusty was innocent of robbery. It's REALLY wierd how much Krusty gets away with when you think about it. All becuase he entertains children. My guess is that's the real reason Krusty stayed a clown his whole life. He keeps going back to being a clown not out of necessity, but becuase it's a great public act.

Earlier on in the episode, the Simpson family are listening to “The FBI Light Opera Society Sings the Complete Gilbert & Sullivan”, & the entire family sings along to Three Little Maids from The Mikado. Bart is smarter than Lisa in a lot of ways. In my opinion, he would do better than Lisa. He has a mixture of street and book smarts, can adapt after high school depending if he wants to go to college. Lisa depends too much on school smarts.
@DragonmanX90
@DragonmanX90 6 ай бұрын
@@RyanTheDark Lisa is intelligent; but much of her aura of "genius" stems from her being compared to the adults around her and those in her age group. She'll always be smarter when compared to the Wiggums or Lenny. She's so completely tied her sense of self-worth to her intellect that she's not managed to develop social skills or street smarts; and loses her mind whenever she's not the "smart one". Bart, by comparison, is an unmotivated underachiever; he sees no reason to try to succeed other than making Marge happy since Homer doesn't care. But get him invested, and he can outwit just about anyone.

My favorite Side Show Bob moment will always be the scene where he reads "Man in the Iron Mask" to Krusty's live audience and they're so immersed in the reading that they actually get upset when Bob tells them "sorry Children we'll read another chapter next week."

Classic Simpsons, even when it got surreal like this scene, always managed to stay just this side of surreal to be hilarious. One reason for the show's decline was when it started throwing in really ridiculous stuff that was just too bizarre.
@WouldNotPokeThat
@WouldNotPokeThat 8 жыл бұрын
Golden Age Simpsons dabbled in surrealism, but knew when to toe the line. It rarely used it as a plot point, but instead for a great joke. It isn't until the Scully era that you get stuff like Homer ending up on a Prisoner-esque island.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 8 жыл бұрын
WouldNotPokeThat That's a good disctintion. Sideshow Bob would not need to have these props and costumes and the Union Jack appear out of nowhere for the episode to work. I remember the Prisoner episode...ugh. But the first sign for me was Armand Tanzarium. There you have the whole plot centred on something surreal. That was the beginning of the Scully era, Season 9.
@WouldNotPokeThat
@WouldNotPokeThat 8 жыл бұрын
valar Principal And The Pauper is where the show forever loses its magic. Although I think you can start to see the cracks around season 8, that was the first episode that legitimately upset me. The show became too weird and meanspirited after that.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 8 жыл бұрын
WouldNotPokeThat It bothered me because they spent 8 seasons developing Principal Skinner as a character and then went, "Nah, he's another dude" and then, "Forget the whole thing." Way too contrived. Yep, then the series got weird and meanspirited.

Kelsey always gives his all in Bob's singing scenes. You never expect a VA to look at the scene they're in for a cartoon and go all out; that's usually reserved for anime. Kelsey does his singing in the Simpsons as if it's the performance of his career. He didn't have to, but with that much effort, it makes the character feel more real if that makes sense.

If anything can be credited with getting into Gilbert & Sullivan, it was this. As well as performing in several of their comic operettas I have seen all 13 of them: Trial by Jury, The Sorcerer, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, Iolanthe, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, The Yeomen of the Guard, The Gondoliers, Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke. I gotta give Bart some props for pulling that title right off the top of his head. I certainly wouldn't have been able to just name any Gilbert & Sullivan operetta at age 10. Maybe Pirate of Penzance, but even that would've been a stretch. Then again, I was never stalked by a Gilbert & Sullivan-obsessed murderer at age 10, so I didn't have much incentive to learn.
