Paul's scene on the porch with Maya, where they both expound on their love of wine - one of the best scenes ever. That one scene made pinot sales explode for years! I ran the Sideways Wine Club from 2005 - 2010, and still carry Santa Barbara Pinots I discovered back then. They are world-class!

One of the greatest endings in a movie of all time. It's a 'literary' ending - a 'literature' ending maybe; something you would find in a literary novel. It's also a complex but very satisfying ending... for adults! 'Complex' adults! Love Giamatti in it. The whole cast tell the story of the characters perfectly. Big time stuff.
@targetedindividual79315 жыл бұрын
That's exactly it. Very flawed, yet relatable people, adulting their hearts out. They're exactly like me, if I knew anything about wine, had written The Great American Novel, and was as beautiful as Virginia Madsen. And you just know that Miles is going to write a highly acclaimed and successful second novel. You hope, anyway. He has it in him.

One of my all-time favorite movies. I've watched it so many times (last night) that I know the lines by heart. All for actors made the movie work. I was blessed to have lived in Solvang for 10 years and watching the movie makes me homesick. It is the one place I wish I could return as a resident, if I hit the Lotto.

I actually met Alexander Payne, author of Sideway in Santa Monica at the Ruskin Theater in 2012. It's was the premier of the play based on the movie. He talked extensively about his years in Santa Barbara before writing his book and the aftermath of its success. Much of his real life is in the book more than you'd think!

Both Miles and Maya's deep discussion on that porch, while on the surface was about wine🍷, metaphorically is was about human beings and life! Virginia Madson's response had such depth of feeling! Vertical wasn’t nearly as good. It’s too self-referential and its comic scenes are either too weak or so extreme as to be horrific. It also has a surprisingly dark ending. They’d have to make some significant changes in the adaptation for it to approach the greatness of the first one.
