UPDATE AUG-23-2021: Some people are having trouble with the filament change feature, I am aware and will be working on an update ASAP. Sorry for any inconvenience for anyone having this issue.
UPDATE JULY-15-2021: I increased the max extruder temp from 235 to 275 for those that are using an all metal/bi metal heat brake and printing higher temp materials like ABS. WARNING: IF YOU HAVE A STOCK HOT END DO NOT HEAT UP BEYOND 240c, THE PTFE TUBE IN THE HEAT BRAKE CAN BEGIN TO MELT AND YOU RUN THE RISK OF CLOGGING.
UPDATE JULY-9-2021: I made a few changes to both the mainboard firmware and TFT firmware to fix a few bugs that some people have been having.

A known issue with the Sidewinder X1 3D printer is the warped build plates and many of them struggle to print consistent first layers. The only option to fix this without installing an Auto Leveling Probe is manual mesh leveling. There is very little info on how to do it so here is a step by step guide on how to update the firmware and how to go through the mesh leveling process with my compiled version of Marlin 2.0.8.1 and a custom UI for the touch screen.

Bro!!! Your the man!! I haven't used my X1 in months due to the warped bet making first layer adhesion impossible. And, though I've had no issues with compiling and flashing the main board firmware, I could not get the TFT to update to save my life. I believe now that I was simply using to large of an SD card (32GB). Either way, your code and method worked flawlessly, and got me printing again. Thank you so much for all your effort and for the very detailed tutorial. Keep up the good work. You're the man!

Nice job! Really great video. Very well explained, and as you said, you did all the hard work ;-) I have an X1 and have the same issues with the bed. I'm always trying to "split the difference" on leveling with wider prints to get the first layer to work. I've been considering a new printer because of it. I'm always afraid of bricking my printer with a firmware update, but after watching the process, I think you have me convinced.

Will try to install it as soon as I have some time, but thanks in advance for making this and take time to fix bugs/update features. Finally a firmware/tft update for Artillery that adds usefull features without breaking others. 😀 Also I don't know if a lot of people will watch but I would be really interested if you make a video about the logic and steps of creating new buttons with funcionalities on the tft and config right some advanced features in Marlin. UPDATE: False alarm. I re-downloaded your files and it worked this time through. Phew! @@EtherealProject3D I just tried the first TFT flash. It showed 0% and the machine shut off instantly, apparently popping the fuse near the power plug. I tried flashing TFT from Artillery's homepage and that said complete, but now when I turn the machine on it just sits at booting... Any suggestions?

Thank you for some easy instructions on removing the hot glue. I just performed firmware update on my .v4 X1 and it is working great. Now I don't have to waste plastic on a raft for my prints to compensate for my bed.

Just wanted to thank you for this amazing firmware. A big annoyance about the stock sidewinder is the lack of Z axis fine tuning during prints. I used to use Cura for Z axis offset but had to stop prints, remove first layer, rewrite the gcode and print again just to adjust the first layer. This really helped me a lot especially as a beginner

Got it! You can be proud you did call it, the stepper driver voltages all checked out good. So I pulled and switched a stepper driver from a functional axis and it ran just fine with that swapped one, boom problem solved... looked over the bad stepper I think it may have "let the smoke out" but that is a easy enough replacement. You can get another subscriber for a good call. while its waiting for a part i will go ahead and try out the mesh leveling

Just getting into this, everything worked fantastic, great first layers. Moving into other means of calibration. I first ran PID autotune as described. Do you think running the fan at 100% while performing PID autotune be more accurate? Say with the extruder at center of heatbed and +10mm Z. Thanks for all the hard work!

Hey thanks for the offer to help with them stepper drivers. I am gonna grind this out till i got nothing first though(I do techie crap for a living so its a matter of pride). You got me thinking about voltage to stepper motors. I Know the motors are all good too, confirmed it by swapping lines to a good axis(yes i unplugged that second motor so no conflicting signals etc) and seeing that it gets clean input etc fine from that port, i am thinking the volts on my port with the issue probably too low, since i think it best sounds like its skipping a step. I will keep you up to date. Had to drag the old meter out need to measure etc now and compare. And adjust as needed. p.s will tell you if i get around to this mesh leveler which is still just awesome.

Nice one, very interesting. Is the load/unload of the filament stayed the same? meaning simple button push and the heat and move of the extruder done by the firmware?

Yes that function should not have changed as thats just Gcode sent from the TFT.

@@EtherealProject3D unfortunately I had a nozzle heater short out on the printer a little while later (completely unconnected with your changes) which has really got me stumped. The nozzle now heats up and holds temp as it should. The bed heats up but once it gets up to temperature it seems to trigger a shutdown error - it all points to the bed thermistor having failed. What I can't figure out is why one failure would cause another seemingly unrelated error.

You can also use isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) to rub on the hot glue and will easily peel off in one piece after a few seconds :)

This has been a problem for some people. I still have to figure out why the LED function is not working for some people. My Sidewinder is down right now for some mods that I am doing to it.

Neat! I run this exact printer. I might need to swap over to this from another older updated screen OS I was using. I like that meshleveling. I managed to rebuild the hot end and tweak marlin 1.1.9 with changes for my upgraded thermistor and heater rod etc so she can currently get to 310 easily(theoretical max of 350 but I am not trying to burn the house down). I assume I would need to dig in that os to find and modify its internal temp limits too? Question: I get a chatter almost grinding sound out of my Y axis motors going down, then refuses to move up. It did this on and off before any upgrades after about 1yr of use now its 100% of the time. I replaced the 4pin cables to both Y motors from the board. I didn't think its the motors since they are smooth when off etc? only only part left would be the board... maybe a bad signal? I am gonna try loosening that y stop sensor as well since i heard over tightening might pinch it and cause it to act weird. Ever hear of this motor behavior? i didn't want to change boards honestly since it humors me greatly how much myself and others are getting out of these simple little boards. Any advice would be appreciated.

Check the stepper drivers. And if you need some custom settings for your specific setup I can do that for you and send you the compiled firmware and marlon files.

Thank you for a great video and for all the hard work you put into developing the new software .. one question .. why did you unplug the USB cable and use the laptop for loading the new software to the printer, could you not have loaded the files on to a USB stick and done it that way ?

You are very welcome. On this machine the firmware can not be loaded from a flash drive. The usb/sd ports on it connect directly to the display and the display only acts as a gcode sender and doesnt have the necessary connection for firmware uploading. This process can only be done from the USB port on the mainboard.

The basic settings and custom gcode is done in the config.ini file. The icons are converted to their respective bin files on an mks tool I found online. The tool isnt 100% complete but once you figure out whats missing its not hard to fill the gaps. I will post a link to it when I get a minute.

Nice video Id heard about manual mesh setting before but never seen it in practice. Not sure pulling connectors out by the wires is such a good idea thou.

IT would be really nice to have the h and advanced h so I can tweek the setting to include the little changes I have made to my printer. Slice engineering hot end, Bontech extruder, and bltouch, and what not. Your tft looks amazing !

Thanks for your videos. Is there a way to fix the screen of Artillery X2 other than replacing it? I did a reflash, and the screen went blank, not in your video, but in another video before yours.

You may have put in the wrong firmware or the sd card you used is not format correctly. Its gotta be less than 8 gigs and fat32.

Not sure exactly what you are asking, but buying an X2 is the best way to upgrade to one.

Hi. Thanks for a great video and explanation; I also have a sidewinder X1 v1.5; I'm thinking in doing this firmware upgrade also to solve the center levelling problem; in my case I can level correctly all 4 corners, but the center is always higher than the corners; in the center the sheet of paper frictions much more than in the corners but without tearing the paper. Do you thing it still will be better to upgrade? Thank you

Recently added a Bondtech LGX extruder to my X1 and at the same time I used the firmware that you made. Using Prusa Slicer as well so can I just do an M92 E400 in the Start G-code to change the esteps from 435 to the 400 that Bondtech recommends?

Yes this should work. In the long run you will want to bake that number into the firmware.

great video, thank you for everything. Question though. To be extra sure, I tried to do the mesh leveling twice to make sure i got the same results. However, what I noticed is that it is different in some areas, higher and lower. Everything was the same though. PLA preheat was on, I used a new sticky note for each test, and I didn't bump the printer at all. I already did the PID calibration beforehand as well... Do you think it could be that it's not saving correctly? I've been hitting the save button once after the 9th pass, like you do in the video, however should I do it after each point? I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. thank you.

There will allways be some variation every time you do the leveling. As long as that variation is within the margin of error you should be just fine. And with using the paper to feel the gap there is the human factor. It bugged me at first coming from spending time using more precise machines like a mill or lathe but I hade to keep in mind these 3D printers are Chinese machines made for your average hobbyists and are levels of magnitude less precise than we wish they could be. Hi there! First of all thanks for doing the work of compiling the code and the tut is solid! I have come across a problem, though. Once everything is flashed and I go about I've done the initial mesh bed level, the printer doesn't home X axis but rather stays wherever it last was and It then lets it crash into right side. I'm not sure how to solve this and I cant see someone in comments having same issue. Would you be able to point me to whats causing it? Thanks! :)

I dont know why it does this, it has happened to me a few times. Typically power cycling the printer fixes it.

I updated the download files and location, there is just a folder named "MKS_TFT28". Use the contents of that folder for your screen update. Sorry for any confusion. Also as it turns out I not too far from you there in Sumner, small world.

It depends on the slicer, the printer natively doesn't like to do this but I have stopped a print to add a nut and restarted again, done in cura.

Yes, absolutely, you just need to ensure that you format the micro sd card to a windows FAT32 format and it is no larger than 8 gigs.

You will need to partition it down to 4 gigs or so I show how to do that in my BL Touch video.

So I finally had some time to update to your firmware. Had a couple of snags. PC Serial driver to connect to Swx1. Got that fixed the other is the LED light switch didn't work. Not sure if you have a fix for that. Leveling went great and this printer is my awesome. Thanks

Following your instructions, I performed the firmware update on my v3 for the TFT and Main Board with no issues at all. I performed the PID tuning and the manual bed level then the mesh level. Now I am MUCH happier with this machine. THANK YOU again for all of your hard work that has enhanced my 3d printing experience. I have will perform this update to my v4 and also have recommended it to a friend.

I have a Genius Pro and I am wondering if the Genius firmware that you have will work for the Pro. I believe the new firmware could be really helpful. I know the Genius does not have an automatic bed leveling probe so I don’t want to put the Genius firmware on if it’s gonna take away from my factory auto bed leveling using the probe. Any thoughts would be helpful.

This looks excellent! I got a new thermistor and hotend for my Artillery printer, the thermistor is a NTC100K. Someone said I needed to flash the firmware and adjust the machine codes to compensate for this new thermistor, can I do that with your firmware?

Hi, did you activate linear advanve and junction deviation in your firmware, and for future update do you have integrate the possibilty to disconnect the screen with a button on it with baudrate ajustement ?

Yes linear advance and Junction Deviation is enabled. I have seen people add a switch to turn power off of the TFT for updates.

@@EtherealProject3D ok so i read a little bit about that, if we use linear advance, it's better to have classic jerk instead of junction deviation. and reverse, if you want to use junction deviation it's better to have linear advance desactivated in the firmware. for information on Molise firmware, david put a button directly in the screen to disconnect the screen and get the printer controled by the computer for update and more.

Hello, excellent work I am testing it and it works very well, but I am having problems with the K factor, in your version of Marlin, the Lin_Advance function is activated?, The factor is at 0 (K = 0), in order to be able to do variations of the slicer? Thanks a lot.

Yes linear advance is enabled and I believe its set to 0.11. This can be changed by setting a new value in your start gcode.

I need some advice/help. I have an old sidewinder x1. I had to replace the drivers when one failed and I put in 2208's (all 5). I installed firmware and booted up and now I will move in x,y and z just like it's supposed to when I used the screen controls but when I try and start a print, (I have a bl touch installed) It goes far right and rear (off the build plate) and starts to move down to home the z axis. It used to go left and front near me, to home. (and On the corner of the build plate.) I examined the firmware and safe home was on (as best i could tell)... I could really use firmware (not in hex pref.) for a Sidewinder X1 with the (waggster) bl touch mod. I have tried changing the firmware, but I just don't understand enough of it to fix it. It also seems that the movements are pretty fast and jerky. I'm not sure about the pins under the drivers. One site says take them all off and others say leave some in (I forget which it said.) I have not soldered or altered the 2208's. Can someone help? Thanks !

The firmware will need to have the new drivers defined and you will need to adjust the vrefs. I can fix the firmware but the tuning the voltage will be on you.
