Scenes taken from the film's ending..
The Song "Amen" by Jester Hairston (in the film, dubbed by Hairston).
Lilies of the Field is a 1963 film adapted from the 1962 novel with the same name by William Edmund Barrett starring Sidney Poitier, Lilia Skala, Lisa Mann, Isa Crino, Francesca Jarvis, Pamela Branch, Stanley Adams and Dan Frazer, was adapted by James Poe from the novel. It was produced and directed by Ralph Nelson. The title comes from Matthew 6:27-33 a portion of the Sermon on the Mount in the New Testament and its parallel scripture from Luke 12:27-30.
It tells the story of an African American itinerant worker who encounters a group of East German nuns who are convinced he has been sent to them by God to help them build a new chapel.
Sidney Poitier won the 1963 Academy Award for Best Actor, the first time a black man won a competitive Oscar. Poitier also won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival.

In my opinion, this final scene is a testament to how memorable this film was, is, and always will be. Mr. Poitier's performance had 'Oscar Winner' written all over it.

But all of Sidney's movies -- including this one -- had the same story line and premise: A black man comes into a white environment and is initially resented because's he "colored." But in time, and because of his character, he wins the whites over and they come to admire him. The moral of the story -- blacks can be just as good as whites and prejudice is wrong. Most of Sidney's movies were created in the 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement, and were produced by white liberals who were trying to soothe their conscience about racism in America. Nevertheless, he was a great actor though.
