Last year, hundreds of people in Sierra Leone took to the streets in frustration at rising inflation and economic hardship. The protests turned violent and led to deaths.
Since then, President Julius Maada Bio has been re-elected, but there were accusations of widespread irregularities in the poll in June.
A former coup leader in the 1990s, Bio’s first civilian term was recognised for championing education and women’s rights. But after the recent coups in the region, does Sierra Leone face a similar risk?

From Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 ❤️ I like the part he (President Bio) said while we try to give the credits to the international actors, it is also important to consider the local actors that played a very critical role, especially women, paramount chiefs and other organizations that do not have have that influence to project what they were doing. I think this is one factor the UN Peace keeping Committee needs to consider when awarding credits after a long fought war to various actors. Local people often make the greatest sacrifice but they are hardly rarely exalted.

Senegal is presently heading towards elections in February. But, the government denies the opposition to campaign with over 5 to 600 political prisoners including the front running opposition leader in a supposedly democratic country. ECOWAS is fully aware of this poor governance but is giving it the deaf ear. Senegal is one of the few countries in Africa that never had a coup, but somehow, these incidents coupled with judicial and military injustices and suppression have blindfolded both the ECOWAS and France who stands to lose more francophone states if the opposition comes to power. This double standard strategy is what is creating these so-called "good Coups." Thank you.

I have great respect for the people of Sierra Leone. This land went through a lot of turmoil. From the days of slavery, colonialism, coups , bad governance and civil war.A lot of blood was spilled over the centuries. I hope we as a people can make it better for future generations.

Very interesting interview! I overstand why he had to respond the way he did and the coup question. He doesn't want to set himself up for the next coup😅..which is understandable because he is head of government, currently. But reading between the lines, he appears to favour it in certain circumstances. I really apprecia-love how he handled this interview. But i leave it up to his country women and men to decide if he is considered a good and efficient leader.

I have been living in Sierra Leone over 10 years now, and I must commend President Bio for the total security protection in the country but mean while he have to double up on the prices of goods on the market, things prices are really sky rocketing. An average Sierra Leonean can living on $5 per day and this was not like that.

He absolutely honest and eloquent about the issues. The cause of the war from 1991 to 2001 does point to the impact of many years of APC maladministration and mismanagement of public resources. APC leadership was stealing from the soldiers who were in the bush fighting to save the country. Those uneducated commentators who are ignorant of the underlying causes of today’s difficulties, do not realise that Ahmed Tejan Kabba handed over a booming economy to the APC and the APC handed over to wrecked economy with billions of dollars in debt internationally, trillions of Leones in debt locally, bankrupt Bank of Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank.

In our nation their are no justice, no freedom of speech, no democracy no prize control, corruption in high increase, brutality is day by day, no employment, every day things are getting hard and hard, no freedom of speech for opposition parties, the judiciary is not independent to name few. We have more than four to five thousand graduate every year from different university, college and other affiliated institutions but not even seven hundred will have a job. We don't have enough employment facilities.

The guy is a serial coupist, so of course, he justifies his coups, including the one in June of this year. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that the interviewer was sufficiently prepared. If he were, he would have played the speech by the fmr. President, Ahmed Tijan Kabba, at the U.N General Assembly, where Kabba eloquently informed the world that Bio overthrew his coup partner and then head of state, Valentines Strasser, precisely in an effort to thwart the plan for an election. He was forced to submit to an election. It was never his desire to do so. This guy is a pathological liar. But don't believe me, fact-check my statement. Look up the speech by Ahmed Kabbabat the UNGA!

But his regime and young brave comrades overthrew and rescued Sierra Leone at the time when the country was held hostage by serial dictators, elites, and a single party system. By your words, he didn't hold on to power and submitted as promised for a democratic election process (the first one for over 2 decades under an autocratic one party system). He wouldn't have won his first term in 2018 as a civilian if his people and country shared the same sentiment.

Your perception about President Bio's presidency or past record as an Army Brigadier is obviously biased. He's one of the few active soldiers (in the world) who took power from a military government and handed it over to a civilian regime. In the 1900, there were over 20 successful coup attempts across Africa and it was only in Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 a de facto coup leader was overthrew by another military faction just to hand the power over again to a civilian democratic government.
