Sifting for fossil shark teeth in New Zealand

Mamlambo Fossils

Mamlambo Fossils

Күн бұрын

A few viewers have said I should sift the material from some of the sites I go to to see if there are any cool fossils in there. I took their advice and took a 10 mesh (10 holes per inch) sieve to go and see what I could find.
I sifted a bucket of material on the beach and then took it home to inspect it closely under some good lighting.

That large stone immediately behind the one you took home - at 7:04 - 7:26 - is split and has IMO an interesting impression that looks like a huge hand with long fingers...

You look out for sharks yet in the process you attract the attention of cetaceans :O. Jokes aside every trip you make is sooo interesting, the suspense and the fact that you never know what you will find and whatever you find makes every video worth watching to the end :).

You need to be sifting down around Venice beach in Florida. Buckets of small shark teeth. The sandbars off the shore usually have the bigger ones. Of course, you can find big specimens throughout the state if you know where to look. Good luck in all your outings! Stay safe.

There was so much in this adventure!Woah, how complete do you think the whale skull is? And we're you able to tell if it was petrified wood? It sure looked like it! I dig your microscope set up and the close ups. Very nice! And good finds on the shark teeth, although it sounds like you spent a great deal of time on them.

Sifting looking good so far, I usually use a second smaller guage classifier which removes the larger pebbles/gravel but is easily picked through quickly on site for the larger fossils, teeth and bones. It takes a little longer but I can leave the bulk of the material on the beach and just go through the smaller stuff at home since that's what usually takes the most time. It usually halves what you have to carry but doesn't add so much time that it isn't worth doing. Depends on personal preference more than anything though

You would go crazy on the beach in Venice Florida USA. You can sit there in the warm sand, and pick up a whole bag of shark teeth in a very short time period. No digging, no lugging, no sifting, just pick them out of the sand.

I don't think that was such a bad hunt, even if most of your sifted finds were shells... Not if I compare it with the material I'm going through now :P Sure, the result may be crocodile teeth of up to 5 mm tall for a crown (although I've only once found a rooted specimen). You said you took two hours to find the sharks' teeth? Try four hours of digging per bucket and then a day per bucket in addition breaking open marl in order to find two to three crocodile teeth per bucket ;) And I'm not even speaking about the skull! Wow, the way you just keep finding those!
