In this episode of Han Dynasty Weapons, we look at the Double Short Pole Ji 戟, the single hand halberd from the Han Dynasty that was made famous by the fierce warrior (and Han Dynasty version of the Rock) Dian Wei.
We will also look at how this shield could have been used with a shield, sword, and second Ji.

Another interesting application of Ji is Shou/hand Ji, that is the Ji head, use as defence sidearm and throwing weapon. (as shown in tv drama Luoyang )

Great reconstruction works! 汉书 had recorded several dozens pre 2th century Chinese treatises on melee combats, but virtually none survived till the 7th century. I remember reading a book on the history of Chinese martial arts and for the Han dynasty part it had so meager sources to rely upon so that they had to cite Cao Pi bragging in his own writings (which were mostly on literary critics) how he defeated an advisor of him using a bamboo cane as sword after a lunch discussion or something.

What are some good forms for double short ji? (For the long ji you used hook spear form) I will get my first Choy li fut lesson on Mei 10th in the hague. I'm looking forward to it, I think it's from the Doc Fai Wong lineage as your school.

That's great!!! We are from the same lineage! You'll definitely learn a lot at your lesson, your Sifu is very good! As for your question about forms for the double ji, I would say you can adapt many different weapons (double dao, melon hammers, and even hook swords) but personally, I think the best fit is the double axe form.

@@SifuKuttel makes sense. Will I have any benefit from my circus background? (Specialized in devilstick and aerial silk but I also know poi/kiwido -had a brief attempt rope dart and with similarity between that and diabolo, I picked up a bit fairly quick-, diabolo, contact staff, juggling and it's variations, rola bola, globe walking, Danish stilt and jumping stilt walking, unicycle, Chinese pole, trapeze, aerial hoop, 6th kyuu Kendo, 3th kyuu Shotokan Karate,, 8th kyuu jiu jitsu, 3th kyuu Judo, a few years of kobudo, 2 lessons of wing chun and 1 workshop of sippalki -Korean martial art that has also borrowed from Chinese military martial art, including quarterstaff, spear, sword, double dao, guandao and although we didn't use them there were also sword and rattan shield, trident, multipoint bamboo spear and some other things. It's very interesting they even have versions on horseback, if you want to look it up you can google for muyedobotongji, this is the name of the manuscript⁰

@@woutvanostaden1299 with your experience you will be able to pick things up quickly. Just be sure to pay attention to the details, because even though it may resemble something you’ve learned in another art, the method of movement or power generation may be completely different. Otherwise it will be a nice addition to your movement art training 💪💪💪

@Sifu Kuttel Axe form would be the best imo, they can both swing, hook, push and thrust(somewhat), and both are front heavy.
