Takeaways: Some SIG MCX Spear LT 556 shoot well. Some SIG MCX Spear LT 556 shoot poorly. All SIG MCX Spear LT 556 have a significantly higher MSRP than nearly every AR-15, apart from Knights Armament SR-15. All SIG MCX Spear LT 556 are non-standard piston AR-15 variants that weigh more overall than standard comparable AR-15s and that weight is forward of the magazine well. Some SIG MCX Spear LT 556 seem to have handguard flex that may be unacceptable for LAM, CNVD, and/or COTI users. All SIG MCX Spear LT 556 come with non-adjustable fixed length stock with a length of pull that is not suitable for most average American males. The SIG MCX Spear LT 556 does have a folding stock and can be fired when folded. I feel that all of the drawbacks to the SIG, most importantly its cost, outweigh its few advantages over the AR-15. URG-I is my choice.

I think we reached the peak of evolution in regards to firearms. You can spend millions in developing a new service rifle, and, in the end, it will only be marginally "better" than proven guns like the AR15, AR18 and AK, but for a way higher cost.

We are definitely at the point of diminishing returns in regards to this type of rifle. I am glad to see piston guns become far more prevalent.

Yes. The AR-15 and AK are so mature at this point that anything "better" then those is stupid expensive or makes significent sacrifices to be better in certain aspects. And if I'm given a fixed budget to equip an army I don't see the value in any of these newer platforms when you can buy twice as many M4s with add-ons for what sig and others are changing.

Indeed, unless there are breakthroughs in metallurgy and propellants, AKs and Ars pretty much more than good enough.
@geoechidna
@geoechidna 2 ай бұрын
Even crazier is that NONE of these designs are remotely new. The AK is basically a massively improved and streamlined M1 Garand that’s upside down, the M4 is based on a design from the ‘50s, and even the “newest”, the AR-18, is basically using the same gas system from the SVT-38/40 designed in the late ‘30s. The only real “innovation” I’ve seen this century is improvements in polymer receivers, and even then this is a “what’s the point” kind of thing that I personally wouldn’t take over aluminum or even stamped steel. I genuinely wonder if we’ll still be seeing AKs and ARs in 200 years. It seems like these are the evolutionary dead ends of firearms design and maybe that’s okay. 😂

Actual Spear LT 11.5 owner here. Had the "bendy barrel" problem, turned out to be loose handguard screws. Tightened those to spec as well as barrel clamp screws. Accuracy was crap, 5-6 MOA. Had to turn the gas system to " + " to get it to function in temps below 30F. Had to use the " + " gas setting after firing more than four magazines. Noticed rail was really dirty. Found that the gas block was loose. It went back to Sig. Sig replaced the barrel and test fired it. They do have good CS. I had the Spear back in 4 days. They sent the test fire targets as well. I have only done a test fire so far. Planning to do more testing this weekend. I do still like the Spear. Its just going to take some time and ammo to verify the problems are resolved.

The fact that the MP5 was still trying to be "killed" by competitors 50 YEARS after it hit the scene, really speaks to the genius behind the design and all that. 1965 the MP5 was released and it is still the bar to which everything in that sphere is judged.

The Mp5 has been an outdated platform for A LONG time. 1993 was when it was getting dropped by many SF groups when its failure in combat was seen during African operations. The US Seals kept using them for a while because of how well they worked for water interdiction. Its very smooth to shoot and still fun to use but it hasn't been cutting edge in combat for a long time. The mp5 was fielded in special uses during GWOT when trying to maintain a lower profile.
@johnher4946
@johnher4946 2 ай бұрын
A LRBHO and modernized rails are the only improvements to be made. The former isn't that important for a gun rarely deployed in a situation that needs speedy reloads, and the latter didn't get started until SMGs were beginning to get obsolete. The MP5 has been killed effectively by the proliferation of SBRs.

I agree with everything you said. As a 16” rifle mine sat in my safe for 6 months and never made any range trips. Eventually I decided to convert it to a shorter barrel. After a cost analysis I couldn’t really justify a new 11/11.5 inch barrel. Ultimately I had my 16” barrel cut down to around 12” and had a sig suppressor P&W to the end of it (the machining and P&W was still less than half the cost of a new barrel). Now the OAL is just over 16” and the rifle shoots very well. I changed out the selector, handguard, trigger, stock and a few other things. It’s heavy but at least it makes the range days now.

Looking forward to the Rattler review. I think for the majority of what people need in the states for self defense, the Rattler can do. Its size and .300 BO make it great to go with you everywhere, and can deal with bad breath distances out to 200 yards without issue. For LE, it’s the patrol rifle you can take with you everywhere (not that most SOPs would allow it) and not have to run back to the car for. Great observations on the MCX as y’all always do.

21:25 Most important segment when talking about the 16 inch or “Patrol” version of this rifle. It’s incredibly front heavy for what it is.. a 5.56 rifle. I also have a Daniel that I paid 1500 for that I've never gotten to shoot under 1.5". Some of it is just luck of the draw, but I've never had a 16" or longer gun that couldn't hit torso sized steel over and over at 600 yards with cheap 55gr plinking ammo. I own a 11.5 spear LT and I dont experience any issues, Ive worked as a gunsmith and have seen the issue most seen in the 16 inch models. I know Isound like a boomer saying this, but here is my perception of the design I dont think sig made the clamp system strong enough to handle the force of flex that a 16 inch barrel can generate. I've never seen the barrel flex issue on any of the 300blkout models which have a 8 inch barrel. I've retorqued alot of 11.5 556 models simply out of owners being worried after their purchase. I've also handled exchanging warranties for sig so I got to see people go into my range and test them literally after they bought, tested, torqued, sent for warranty, then retested. The issue seems to be from my perspective "some have it, some don't." but I can say the rate seems to be higher with the 16 inch models. I've only sent 1 11.5 inch which I did not attempt to retorque at a customers request. when it returned the customer said CS resolved his issue and the rifle was shooting around 1 moa with match ammunitions with a surefire suppressor attached. mine shoots 1.5 moa using a 1-6 razor and rugged razor 7.62 as my suppressor for testing, I normally shoot it with a romeo 4t on unity mount but I do not trust reddots for grouping. I do use a arisaka rail clamp, I have never used the rifle without one. I'm not taking any sides in the conversation only sharing my experience. I do like my 11.5 spear LT its one of my favorite suppressed rifles, but I don't care the 16inch version, I would say testing a 11.5 inch model would give the gun a fair chance to redeem itself. Sig is not saying why this issue is present so everything is speculation on why the issue is present, testing a 11.5 inch would give it a chance to redeem itself and give it a fair fight I think. once again not taking any side only sharing my experience, I have the unique position where I have seen many LT models both on a range and in a smith room.

These days you have to bolt shit to a rifle to be credible, so light-weight 2x and flashlight later it arguably can reach a bit farther and in darker conditions, but mostly it’s the same handy, reliable, not-quite-perfect truck gun I liked a lot as a youngster.

They're two totally different weapons for starters and most of the issues with the MCX stems from the rail itself and possibly the cross bolts not being torque from factory. What this means is just go with LMT since you have any barrel modified to its system.

I sold my Kate Moss stock for $140 and I hope the buyer is still enjoying it regardless of the "collector's value" today. It was adequate but not comfortable, and it's totally insane how much it's blown up when virtually identical clones and even better variations of it are on the market today. The thin shoulder blade doesn't distribute recoil so well, and I didn't like how it kept pushing against my earpro.

It's crazy how much Sig usa rifles varying accuracy from one to the next, a Swiss PE90 with gp90 ammo is a 1moa rifle. Some of them even shoot better, heck the 550 sniper with GP90 is a half minute rifle but obviously that's very specialized

I own an 223 11.5" and 16" PWS, plus 9" 300 mcx and 11.5 556 mcx. The 16" PWS is a super long and smooth recoil impulse. The 11.5 PWS is quicker and more punchy. The mcx is just a bit quicker and punchier than the PWS models. The long stroke piston of the PWS is my favorite recoil of the bunch. A standard DI rifle is the lightest recoil by a lot. I just prefer gas adjustment and easy wiping clean due to the Piston systems because I was in his game before flow through suppressors, and I suppress everything.
