We shot the ‪@DesertTechUT‬ SRS M2 last time, but in .300 Win Mag. This time we threw in the .338 Lapua Mag barrel and bolt to see how it would do... and boy did it deliver!

@@RARufus From what I'm seeing online, most match grade .338LM ammo is closer to $7 a round currently, so roughly $140 for a box. And I thought I had it bad having to pay €80 for a box of 20 rounds... ye gods the Americans are getting it every way 'till Tueday. Really isn't surprising more and more sport shooters are starting to reload their own ammo.

@stephensands3485
@stephensands3485 6 ай бұрын
You mind sharing generally what your cost per round is for 338 and what the main components of that cost are? Totally understand that you’re likely loading for accuracy > cost effectiveness (which is what I do with my 6.5 Creed as well), just curious what reloading costs are like vs factory match ammo.
@Heywoodthepeckerwood
@Heywoodthepeckerwood 6 ай бұрын
@@mahbuddykeith1124 too many variables on 308. If you are trying to make the best hunting/target ammo, reloading saves quite a lot. As to bulk, I would try to find good deals on military surplus ammo. Tho, you can find 500 count boxes of 147 grain fmjbt bullets for fairly cheap, if you already have spent brass, it’s cheaper to reload.
@Heywoodthepeckerwood
@Heywoodthepeckerwood 6 ай бұрын
@@stephensands3485 yes sir. Each round costs. I use H1000 powder ¢.67 Berger 300gr open tip hybrid $1.00 Federal large magnum rifle powder ¢.10 Lapua brass $3.50 = $5.27 per round and I’ve proven it to 2200 yards. The same bullet in lapua brass off the shelf was $6.50 per round back a few years ago, IF you could find it. Still very accurate but not as accurate in my rifle nor does not have the same muzzle velocity. Of course, I also reuse brass so it brings the cost of shooting my 338 down to $1.77 which is quite a bit of savings. There are cheaper options for bullets and brass but not too much, the cheapest brass I found was hornady at $3.00 per which is still good brass and ¢.50 per round savings. As to bullets, I stopped looking after I was happy with the accuracy, velocity and ballistic coefficient of the Bergers. Off the shelf = $6.50 Virgin loads = $5.27 Reloads = $1.77

@A8vscRrabbit 6 ай бұрын
@@mahbuddykeith1124there really isn't a "savings" with reloading. You also have to count your labor hours into the mix. By the time you've gotten to dropping powder, you've got substantial time invested in case prep. I've been reloading for the last 10yrs. What you get in reloading is consistency. On plinking ammo I test the powder load every 5th cartridge. On "match" I measure everything, every time.

Holy crap that was amazing. Everyone who does a lot of shooting knows that feeling of the seriousness of shooting an expensive setup and ammo. My teenage boys are still in the stage where the loudest noises and hardest recoil impress them. I'm moving into the stage where I enjoy the process/break from the daily grind and a break from the $1-$2 trigger pulls of the 308. I'm going to shoot tomorrow and I may just bring a 16" AR and shoot 5.56. But man, that 308 is a really nice gun.

Hilariously, the .300 win mag wins according to Hodgdon with 210s. The Norma and prc are loaded way longer and the win mag stays right with them at 3.34" 😂. Run the same bullets from the same barrels loaded to the same oal, and the win mag keeps right up with them, and burns less powder than the norma. They're too ballistically similar to be all that interesting in a comparison.

The 338 actually has a little less ft/lbs energy at 800 yards compared to a 308 at 100 yards. They are about equal with 300 LM at 700 yards to 308 at 100 yards. It still rocked the targets at all ranges though. It's a lot of mass hitting that steel.

@@RARufus Kinetic energy (1/2 * mass * velocity^2) against hardened plates just splatters the bullets harder. What swings plates is momentum (mass * velocity), giving the 338 LM more of an advantage than energy predicts.

It doesnt use modern 45/70 ammo, because the cartridge expands and you need a dowel rod to push it out down the barrel. The period ammo doesnt have this problem, it ejects just fine. When you own a setup like that, the bullet cost is negligible compared to everything else. Very nice though

Excellent!! Love it! Any chance at all you'll be able try a Desert Tech HTI? Not sure which ammo you could afford for it though, maybe start at 800ft?
