Ian! Great to see you back! I love Sigma lenses especially the f1.4s. I got EF mounts for my trusty 6 mark 2 and have a Sony adapter for my modded Sony A7s and 7r2. No need for camera upgrades until something breaks! This fisheye looks amazing! And likely TOTALLY worth the cost given my experience. Funny how Light pollution can sometimes be our friend!

I certainly have a love, mostly hate relationship with light pollution. I can be both beautiful and ugly. It can make or break a shot, but, ultimately, it's preventing most people from realizing where we really are. Most people don't have the perspective of being on a small rock floating through space and I think that's a shame. If everyone was able to really see the Earth in its place in the cosmos, I think we'd have a world of people that would treat each other more kindly.

I really like how you've approached color grading and editing in this. Also thought it was cool seeing the distortion in the timelapse around the core. It looks like it bends slightly, made it feel unique.

Thanks so much! I'm still learning a lot in the video editing realm and this one was a bit tough because my second full frame Sony camera body was out of commission. I ended up shooting all the shots of the lens with a 12 year old hand-me-down Canon T3i that I loaded Magic Lantern on so that I could shoot raw video. T3i has too slow a card slot so I could only capture in a 3:1 aspect ratio and I was limited to 10 second long shots before the buffer would fill up and start frame skipping 😂. I ended up loving the 3:1 aspect and decided to keep it the standard for the whole video. Still trying to figure out the grade for the night video in order to minimize the noise while still being KZfaq compression friendly. I figured out you can't just crush/lift the shadows because KZfaq turns it into a blocky posterized mess. It took 5 separate grade changes and upload tests before I got something that looked OK. I still want to try to improve...

Wow, that's impressive! Now that Sigma has brought out the new f/1.4 in 14mm and now this 15mm fisheye lens I am seriously thinking of selling my Canon Ra camera and switching over to Sony just for these and the rest of the fantastic 3rd party lenses on offer to Sony. Getting really tired of waiting for Canon to wake up with their dismal lens selection and 3rd party RF choice. It's really tough to keep holding on trying to be loyal to Canon. Great video as always Ian and if you are ever planning a trip to Scotland again (especially the Grampian Mountains, Aberdeenshire area) please look us up, regards Simon 😉✨

Thinking of getting the MEGADAP adapter for mounting this E Lens on my Z mount Nikon. Also tempted with the Sigma 14mm F/1.4 E Mount for pure astro on my Z8.

Nothing to hate Canon for, RF mount is pretty much still in its infancy considering the run time of the EF mount. While it sucks we can't get these lenses, the mount will be open sooner than later.

Great video. I am also seriously considering this new lens, but I already have the Sigma 14 F1.4 DG DN and Sony 14GM, so still debating, what's your opinion regarding the image quality between this and the 14 F1.4 DG DN besides the Fisheye vs Rectilinear.
@LonelySpeck
@LonelySpeck 2 ай бұрын
Because of the lack of rectilinear distortion, the fisheye has a sharper image overall. It doesn't stretch the extreme corners like a "normal" rectilinear lens does.

@@LonelySpeck Thanks again for you feedback Ian, very helpful, please keep on doing this kind of real life review, that makes your channel stand out of other " reviewer" who mostly just do test charts. Got another question not related to this lens if you don't mind, I am shooting with a pair of Astro Modified Sony, and wondering how you handle the White balance in the field, do you prefer to set a fixed number ( in Kelvin) or you leave it in auto, I normally set it at 3000 Kelvin this way all my shots are consistent, but then I still have to do quite a bit of work in post, just wondering if you have any suggestion or any video specifically on " How to set you WB when shooting Milky Way with Astro modified camera".
@LonelySpeck
@LonelySpeck 2 ай бұрын
@@dannyli9424 on my astro modified body I set a custom WB with a grey card in daylight. Raws usually look quite orange out of camera. Really, any non-auto setting for WB is fine as long as you're shooting raw.

Assuming that it is easier to design and manufacture a fisheye than a rectilinear lens, the $400 price difference between the 14/1.4 and 15/1.4 suggests to me that Sigma is banking on zero competition with the fisheye. I'd love to get the fisheye but $2000 is pricey and I just got the 14 before the announcement.
@LonelySpeck
@LonelySpeck 4 ай бұрын
I don't necessarily think that a fisheye is easier. It's just different projection math. The element/group design has two more lens elements than the 14/1.4 which is a fair indication that the 15/1.4 Fisheye is a more complex and possibly more difficult design than the 14/1.4. Either way, it's very much a specialized lens that is certainly premium priced.
@sandb1867
@sandb1867 4 ай бұрын
@@LonelySpeck Since FF fisheyes run as little as $359 (manual focus) so my guess is the challenge is not so much in the projection but rather the edge correction, probably astigmatism and CA, especially for a fast aperture lens. In any case, I'll probably have to wait several months when one of these come up on the used market.
