The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens. What a beast of a lens. I'm using mine for the Sony e-mount crop sensor cameras like the Sony a6300, a6400, and a6500. This is my favorite lens for vlogging and astrophotography.

Things I like about the Sigma 16mm f1.4:
This should be no surprise, but the wide aperture is INCREDIBLE. Great build quality as well. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I actually dropped this lens not too long after purchasing it. From six feet above the ground. The ONLY thing that got (somewhat) damaged was the lens hood. And that wasn’t too bad either. Even though it’s not a Sony lens, the autofocus is still very quick. I can’t actually tell a difference between the focusing speed on this lens vs the focusing speed on my native Sony lenses. Keep in mind I don’t shoot many portraits, I mainly do landscapes and interiors, so quick focusing isn’t a huge deal to me.
Things I dislike about the Sigma 16mm f1.4:
The lens cap is frustratingly difficult to put on sometimes. I don’t know if it’s just me or what, but I have the hardest time putting the lens cap back on this lens. It’s like Sigma left a only a fraction of a mm of free space to where the cap will go on, and anything outside of that will leave the user slowly becoming insane. This lens is HEAVY (405g - 0.89lbs). Like, it’s heavy. Compared to the Sony 10-18mm f4 which I also vlog with, the Sigma 16mm f1.4 is much more difficult to hold up for extended periods of time.
Vlogging on the Sigma 16mm f1.4 (used with Sony a6500):
16mm is a fairly wide angle, definitely wide enough to vlog on, but I’ve found myself having to remember to extend my arms all the way…and I mean, like, ALL the way. Or else my face appears too close to the camera. For me, 14mm is the sweet spot for vlogging, but that’s just personal preference and 16mm is good enough, especially with everything else you get with this lens! The wide aperture is perfect for separating yourself from the background. The wide aperture is also good for vlogging later at night without losing image quality.

What are your thoughts about the Sigma 16mm 1.4?

Have you had to use ND filters with the lens for shooting in bright sunlight ?

I haven't yet, but I've been thinking about purchasing something like a 4 stop to do some lifestyle video. For photos, I've found that fast shutter speeds (1/4000sec or so) compensates pretty well with bright sunlight at wide apertures.

Ughhh the lens cover does suck... but if you want your own personal hell try the sigma 30mm for some reason it takes me twice as long to put it on. Like you I'm not sure what causes it exactly but it's either the lens hardware or the actual cap mechanism. The 16mm lens cap is annoying but the 30mm lens cap makes me have conversations with it... dark, angry conversations.

Thank you for the video, wonderful photos! I have a sony a6000 and I’d like to take photos for astrophography... It is possible to take amazing photos like yours with a tripod? Thank you very much!

Definitely! Just get one that's stable. Any little bit of movement from the tripod will be very noticeable in long exposures

Hey Mike. Just came across your channel as I have been looking into cameras lately. I've been looking into getting into astrophotography, portrait landscape with a subject in the front, as well as vlogging weekend adventures. My brother recommended the sony alpha 6xxx series. Strongly considering picking up the 6400 or the 6600. Just curious to get your opinion on some things: How do you feel about the 16-50mm kit lens for vlogging and astrophotography? Should I pick up the kit lens with the a6400 Or should I save some cash and put it towards this Sigma 16mm? Is it possible to capture astrophotography with the 16-50mm kit lens? OR should I just get the kit lens anyways, just to have lens options? Lastly, somwhat related but what about the rokinon 12mm f2.0? Thanks for the all the videos. Sorry for the loads of questions all at once. Just trying to make get some advice and making the right decisions before dropping all this $$$. I'll be sure to subscribe and check out more of your channel.

Hi i like ur video if u use this lens on Sony a6400 do u need to have gimbal for vlog or tripod is enough?
@MiketheMathMan
@MiketheMathMan 5 жыл бұрын
You could probably vlog without a gimbal if you're careful. The video will be noticeably less stable though. If you're taking photos with a tripod, no extra stability would be necessary. Thanks for the comment!

One question: why did you upload it in 60fps instead of 30? Not sure if it's just me but it's buffering a lot even on WiFi.
@MiketheMathMan
@MiketheMathMan 4 жыл бұрын
That's really strange; I don't remember filming it in 60fps. But I just checked the video and it is indeed 60fps. Mistake on my part!

I had just recently picked up the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and have been blown away by the lens! The image quality off it is incredible! Only downside is it is not wide enough to vlog with so I had been looking into the 16mm. Thanks for the video and breaking it down so I can make a more educated decision if i should pick it up.

Of course! The 30mm is a great lens as well as the 16mm. Good luck and thanks for the comment!

How do you found this lens and the a6k series for astro photography and landscape in term of quality, sharpness and noise
@MiketheMathMan
@MiketheMathMan 4 жыл бұрын
It's amazing for both landscape and astrophotography. Super sharp, high quality. Noise is more of an issue with the camera sensor and ISO though. But using this lens wide open, you can get some awesome night shots without having to raise the ISO too much 👍

MiketheMathMan thank you so much! I was thinking to get the a7iii but that’s means sell all of my lenses (sigma 30, 56, 18-105 and 10-18) I already have the a6000, now just I’m thinking to get the new a6600 and the sigma 16mm for the price of the a7iii and the kit lens, and for the moment if I do that I can’t afford a good FF lens, so I don’t see the necessity to do that

Bro will the canon m50 be a good choice for astrophotography??
@MiketheMathMan
@MiketheMathMan 3 жыл бұрын
The lens is much more important than the camera body in my opinion. If you're looking to do astrophotography, I'd recommend a wide angle lense with a wider aperture like the Sigma. Not sure if they make one for Canon, but I'm sure you can find a Canon equivalent if not

Do you use any ND filter for the sigma 16mm 1.4 lens? What nd filter do you recommend for this lens?
@MiketheMathMan
@MiketheMathMan 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't used any for that lens yet, but I have a Haida 10-stop ND filter for my 10-18mm. Haven't had any issues with it. I'd feel comfortable recommending that filter for the 16mm 1.4. Would be a 67mm size
