Elegant and patient model. Great location too. I have the Sigma 18-35mm and after making autofocus adjustments, the lens is razor sharp but also has the best color saturation between all my other Nikkor lenses. I was using the Nikkor 17-55mm for every day and scenic shots. It does amazing work, but now I have to wonder if the 18-35mm wouldn't do better. I mainly got this lens to shoot video as the glass in it is not unlike a cinema lens.

I've had both lenses for my 70D for the past couple years. They're amazing. Warning: The 50-100 is an absolute beast of a lens in terms of it's weight. I'm sure the 18-35 is like 800 grams which many people consider heavy'ish but since I use the 50-100 about 80% of the time going back to the 18-35 feels like i'm carrying a feather. The heavy weight of the 50-100 doesn't bother me but some people might struggle with it for long shoots. I do find that my focussing can be off a little bit but I'm not experienced enough to know if that's my error, the camera or the lens. Perhaps with modern cameras that have eye af it won't be a problem. The only two lenses you need on aps-c.

Just a few suggestions. Use the lens shade; it'll help combat your image getting washed in situations where there's bright specular light just out of frame. Also while holding an SLR, you can be much steadier by turning your non-grip hand 180 degrees (so your thumb is pointing away from the center of your body), hand horizontal like you're holding a tiny serving tray, body of the camera resting in your palm, fingers around the barrel and elbow braced against your torso. It might feel weird at first, but it's considerably more stable; look at how pros hold their camera. It also puts your fingers in a position to manually focus while holding the camera steady.

I used the same kit like Julia did for quite awhile and I did tried before with the 80d, I totally recommend this two lens to be a match. Autofocus never failed me throughout many events and weddings. But if your canon has dpaf, definitely maximise these two lens and your camera by shooting via liveview. CA is a problem but you can remove them in lightroom. Shot video with them and my only complain is either sigma didn’t put ILIS or Canon doesn’t have IBIS. Now using them as my second camera and still recommend ppl that don’t mind apsc to get this as a matching gear

The 18-35 1.8 is a perfect lens for low light indoor events. Bars, pubs, birthday parties, etc. Lively scenes, where you often need a speedlight. You can really keep the speedlights power down and your photos will look very natural but still crisp. Also street photography at night. I call mine The Owl (Sounds more beatiful in my language though). :-) I belive there are more suitable lenses fot shooting in bright daylight when there are lots of contrast and chromatic aberration is easy to appear.

I have the 18-35 mm one and I'm loving it! Yes it misses focus a lot, like 40-50% of the time when using the viewfinder, especially when you're not focusing it on the center. But you can fix it by using the live view! I have never had an issue with focusing when using the live view. Dan's a pro. Video looks fantastic as always. I did realize I like a wider angle when watching you work. It gives a better perspective on your surroundings throughout the shoot. No complaints though! Was super cool to see you testing lenses and sensor with which I have personal experience. These lenses are spectacular. I did tons of research before I bought them. And I found a KZfaq vid that had the proper settings for my 18-35 via Sigma dock. The 50-100 was fortunately already sharp as hell. Downside as you know is the 50-100 is a straight up brick. I got a fancy ifootage monopod to use with it and I still wasn't encouraged to actually use the thing. So then I bought the Sigma 50mm to keep me company until I have the patience to try it out again. I know I'll love it once I get use to the heft. Thank-you for delving into aps-c for us. I was considering f1.2- f1.4 primes before, but I think you may have changed my mind and made me realize what I have now is good enough :)

The images look very good. My first dslr was eos 400D, then I got 7D and last year the 7Dii. The 7Dii is a great camera and mated to the sigma Art lenses or canon L the results are fantastic. It is an underrated camera. Though it is the one of most popular cameras with amateurs. IMO canon need to release a firmware update to keep it current. Thank you Julia for guiding me to this video of your shoot with the 18-35mm, f1.8 lens. So glad you liked it! Since this is a crop lens the widest end of 18mm actually has a field of view of roughly 28mm, which is a little bit wide for portraits but you can get some nice results there. Then anything more zoomed in than that works really well for portraits too :)

This video is giving me an incredibly hard time about which lens to buy for my 90D first. I can only afford one lens at the moment, not both (and I want both, each for a specific purpose!) Edit: Got the 18-35. As a guy who had no clue he loves photography more than videography, I have my own regrets

I'm saving up for the 18-35mm f/1.8. The 50-100mm f1.8 is worth my entire life, so that's out of the question.

Nice! I feel like the 18-35 is more versatile anyway and then if you want a more portrait/bokeh style lens you can always go for a 50 or 85 which would be a nice compliment to this lens!

I can only recommendto really consider it. I bought this lens like 1 1/2 years ago, used it once and never packed it again.... sold it after just 2 months. It was too impractical, even if images are fine.

It really depends on what you shoot! If I was a full time crop sensor shooter, I would have this lens for all my travels and portrait shoots as well, it has a great range that I love working with!

@@juliatrotti well, for me it was as heavy as my travel kit consisting of 2 zooms and 1 prime. Plus if I used it i wouldn't want to carry my camera in my hand anymore.

It might be only me, but as you mentioned the make-up more so in this video than usual, I was wondering if you would consider making a video on the type of makeup looks you prefer to shoot these natural portraits with? Maybe asking Lidija to share some general tips with us? 😊

Yeah for photo it's at least easy to fix CA with Lightroom, for video that would be a different story!

such beautiful images.... i found sigma lenses are bad for CA & back focusing.. but good optics..

Thank you! I definitely have a LOT of back focusing issues on my Sigma 24mm f1.4 to the point where I can't even use it much anymore. But the 18-35 didn't back focus, only missed focus when the wind and back light was getting a little crazy, no CA either. The 50-100 was back focusing a little more and defs a lot more CA as you could see in the video 😊

Like with many Sigma lenses, the focus reliability issues put me off, to be honest. That said: Great, informative, and well produced video. Thanks.

For me it happens only if I shoot through viewfinder. Flip the mirror or shoot with mirrorless, even when adapted I see the issue gone. In my experience it's more suspectible with Canon, and Canon's newer bodies like 80D. But they have DPAF, so hand-shake is the last issue. My Nikon copy seems OK accross, but still miss more than the natives. If only it was reliable, I might keep those two for life-time.

@@kikipratama1 I hear you. That is why, in the long run, mirrorless seems inevitable. Relying on a FF DSLR system (and many lenses) at the moment, switching to ML "just like that" is a no-no at this point. Being used to the snappiness of shooting through a viewfinder on DSLR (and the sluggishness of live view on DSLR), shooting MF via LF is also a no-no for me. But definitely looking forward to a future switch to ML.

I can’t make up my mind between the 50-100mm or the 70-200mm f2.8 canon Which the 70-200mm may be the best and most quality lens that distance on a crop camera may be alil to much for portrait This is where the 50-100mm comes in to give me that telephoto compression But I can’t put up with the purple fridgin
