The Sigma 18-35 F1.8 is one of the best zoom lenses ever made, it even won our best lens of 2013 award. Since its release, Nikon has brought out a series of wonderful F1.8 FX primes. So if you're a crop shooter looking for F1.8 lenses, does it make more sense to go with the primes or a zoom? Jordan Drake and Dave Paul investigate.

90% of DSLRs are crop frame and most of their users have no idea of what a full frame camera really offers. I am happy that sigma brought this versatile lens with big aperture. ☺️

I'vebeen earning my living from photography for over forty years, and I've recently gone BACK to crop sensor from full frame, and don't regret it at all. There's a lot of mileage left in the aps-c format, and all the while there are cameras about like Canon's 80D/7Dii and Nikon's D7500/D500, I think that's going to continue for a LONG time. Also, many modern EF-S and AF-S lenses offer insane levels of performance for little outlay.

I noticed you shot the Sigma @ f16. I use this lens a lot for landscape, and f16 is its smallest aperture and I've yet to notice any diffraction. I shoot both on the 7D II, mainly for wildlife, and the 5D III for just about everything else, but this lens gives me a brilliant wide (29mm on a 1.6 crop) to mid (52mm) lens. I know the maths don't really work out like this but it's a fair guide. Out of all my lenses, this and my Canon 100mm f2.8 macro, are the only two that are always in my bag.

Just throwing this out there... the 18-35 becomes a pretty damn good 35mm 1.8 on full frame. It's not FLAWLESS, it does have a little bit of vignetting on the corners, but it's pretty damn good. Not too shabby for a lens that shouldn't even be compatible.

1:26 That is what you would think but it is not true. Full Frame lenses lose quite a bit of resolution on crop sensors. They usually resolve about half of the resolution as they do on Full Frame. If you shoot apsc then get apsc lenses if "sharpness" matters to you. Check out DXO and you will see what I mean.

@Swadaable

Except this is not truth. DXO is a business focused on advertising. Why not listen to your basic physics teacher instead? You know, the guy who only got paid to teach you stuff, not to sell you some new shit? How is it possible to loose "sharpens" (you mean resolution right?) only because the light is projected on the smaller area?
@silvavelosa
@silvavelosa 8 жыл бұрын
the optics is simple... remember light is distorted after going through the glass, loosing details and altering colors. Good glass keeps images better than bad glass, but it's still glass and has a limit, it's not like you can put a 100MP sensor on a high end lens and be able to crop 20x to get a 5MP usable image... My point is, if a lens can project a 20MP image over a FF sensor, it won't be able to project a 20MP image over a CF sensor, because it's half the size, so it uses half of the glass, half of the light and gives you half the resolution
@alanbrizan
@alanbrizan 7 жыл бұрын
CF sensors have a tighter pixel pitch than FF sensors. CF sensors inherently have a "HIGHER" resolution than FF sensors. CF sensors crop the same image the FF sensors get from the lens but use smaller pixels the sample the image. A lens cant tell what sensor is behind it.

I really like this lens [the sigma], I do have one small qualm. I do quite a bit of hiking with the lens and camera in a sling [black rapid] at my side. Rubber grip is showing signs of abrasion. The pointed ridges of the zoom ring are somewhat rubbed off on the bottom. Not that this effects the lens optically, I do worry that in a few years it might affect handling. I do recommend the lens, but it is something to watch out for.

Nice comparison. It wouldn't really make sense to get 3 primes in that range though. For competing systems - like fuji - you'd get either an 18mm and 35mm, maybe a 14mm and 23mm etc. Still, nice to see the Sigma is that good. Especially since it pretty much covers a range that has no prime equivalents in Canon (no fast 18mm, fast 20mm, a fast 24mm but a pricey one).

the hilarious thing about full frame mirrorless are the huge lens sizes. and carrying massive lenses was the problem in the first place. look at that Sony 35mm f/1.4. it's a nano-bazooka just like the canonikon offerings. with full frame mirrorless you are still using same camera bags and you are still the obtrusive "camera guy". and you trade off so much, like AF, handling, speedlights, and lens choice. It's just pointless.
@16-bit-trip5
@16-bit-trip5 9 жыл бұрын
dwfgshdtjfyugh To each their own. For me the handling is great and the AF is more than adequate for my general needs. I don't shoot with speedlights so while this is certainly an issue for some it's not for me. I do miss the AF capabilities of my 70D on the rare occasions when I am shooting sports however at the end of the day I prefer the benefits the A7ii gives me: -FF DOF/FOV (compared to APS-C). -EVF -Focus assist tools (zebras, peaking) -IBIS -Better video codecs (compared to the 70D) -Smaller overall package (when I want it to be) -Ability to easily adapt (and use) legacy glass

+dwf, you seem to be a bit stupid. Just because it's mirrorless doesn't mean the lenses will be small. In general, mirrorless will have smaller BODIES, because of the lack of a mirror box that DSLR's have. Lenses are a whole other matter. If you want small lenses, look at Nikon1. If you want smaller lenses look at APSC mirrorless. If you want to look stupid, complain about Sony FE mirrorless lenses, which have to cover a full frame sensor.

Hi there, I've been reading a lot of forum post that people have problem in getting the Sigma 18-35 in focus. Seems the Canon version has the best result. Then Nikon and the Pentax version usually can't focus properly right out of the box and need adjustment either on the lens (through the USB dock) or on the camera. How often of such a problem do you guys see with the Nikon version??

Judging from dwfgshdtjfyugh's other comments (s)he don't care for mirrorless systems to much but the point they brought is valid. Switching AF spots is not as quick as a mid-range/professional DSLR. Had they only made the rear screen a touchscreen this would have been a non issue (switching AF points via touch is super fast in my experience). Oh well, I'm sure A7 iii will probably have that.

I hate this video editing, not enough time to enjoy and analyze photos you take, this is kind of a happy photo walk, please change that, this is a nice channel to learn about photography. Thank you!

GUYS: DO THE LATEST FIRMWARE UPDATE FROM NIKON (1.04) TO YOUR NIKON D7200 AND GET THE ABSOLUTE BEST PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SIGMA ART 18-35!!! The issues that plagued the Sigma/D7200 is gone!!! I tried it many times and is razor-sharp anywhere in the focus group! do not get rid of your Nikon D7200 or Sigma 18-35 ART

i expected nothing less from the sharpest crop body zoom lens and i kinda want one, but that range is just not very useful (to me anyway) not once you have a 10-20mm, a 50mm and a 70-300mm, i suppose it's great for street photography though

Wow, the stabilizer looked sh*t. Pardon my language. There are much better ones out there. Feiyu Tech is a big player (knoptop just did a video on this). I'm personally looking forward to the H1 from Pilotfly to hit the EU market, atleast that one looks really promising (it's for a bit bigger cameras, think: GH4, LX100, A7S and NX1). Probably more like it to be announced at NAB with release dates later this year. With dropping prices as more companies do these kind of handheld pistol grip gimbals. Kind of the thing the Nebula 4000 really booted up. But back to lenses. For my Nikon D5300 I have the 18-55mm II kit lens, the 35mm f/1.8 DX lens, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 which is adorbz! The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 II, then some other Nikon beasts: the Nikkor good ol' AI-S 28mm f/2.8, AF-S 28-70mm f2.8D ED and AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED. Would love to get the 750D, but actually as a hybrid shooter, I'd rather stay mirrorless and use a focal reducer on M43 cameras (GH2, GH4, BMPCCs, E-M1). And then Nikon really proves themselves! I can use cheap adapters or focal reducers (lens turbo/speedbooster) whilst still being able to control the aperture! The Sigma 18-55mm f/1.8 is one of the most brilliant lenses for this kind of use. Their ART lens line-up is really top notch.

How's the Tokina 11-16? I do nightclub photography and I want to go wider if I stay with my crop...

187onaPigeon Just keep in mind that it's pretty soft and not that great in lowlight. But it's manageable. Main use here is on a glidecam-type stabilizer. Lots of people use it for M43, because there's hardly anything that wide. The 12-35mm f/2.8 and 12-40mm f/2.8 are pretty great, but rather expensive, with the 12-40mm f/2.8 for handheld needing a camera with sensor stabilization. Haven't been using the 11-16 on the D5300 yet. I just so happened to have all the glass before snagging myself a D5300 for really cheap rather recently and then just added the cheap 35mm f/1.8DX kitlens for some native e-use. Having gone Nikon mount on other lenses because of aperture control on adapters was a nice added bonus.

soft compared to what? a zeiss prime? yeah it would be soft there. otherwise the tokens is the king of DX ultra wide zooms plus you get 2.8. obviously the weakest point of any lens is wide open. that said dude is talking night club photos not landscapes, so soft wide open corners are not a big deal.

Anyone have suggestions for cheaper alternatives to good wide angle lenses for crop bodies? The sigma looks real nice.. but I mean in the 400-600 dollar range?

you know your system is garbage when the users are begging for generic lenses! huge mistake going with Samsung. system cameras are SYSTEMS. that means lenses, speed lights, etc. Samsung has a spec'd out super mirrorless camera in a DSLRS form factor, with an amateur sensor size, and a semi-pro price. huge mistake. I say sell it off now while you still can. do not put another dime in a Samsung system.

dwfgshdtjfyugh No other lens manufacturer has a lens like the 18-35mm, I would have wanted this regardless of which camera i used. The camera is amazing, their lenses are amazing, and I will spends lots more on this system. There is no such thing as an "amateur sensor size" :P Get real, stop trying to troll.

Will the Nikon version of this work on my d3200 ? I read that I need a 7100 to have the auto focus work on the lens, but on Amazon people are recommending this lens on the 3200

if the lens you are getting have HSM at the end of its name means that it is having an hyper sonic motor, and it does not have to rely on body motor. please recheck the name of exact lens you are buying.

highly highly doubt some generic lens with hacked AF algorithms performs more consistently than OEM glass in most situations. For the 10,000x time, AF lock doesn't not automatically mean actual AF on the subject you want, especially with ring type motors.

why can not I take sharp pictures with my Nikon D3200 camera with SIGMA Lens 18-35mm f / 1.8? I use 125 Shott speed f / 8, ISO 100, what must I change in my camera settings?

how am I supposed to know? You could be out of focus, autofocus could be performing wrong. You could be moving the camera too fast when taking pictures. You could be doing any number of things wrong.

@Levi: I am afraid the Gopro Gimbal you tested is not really a good one ;-) Did you ever try the G4 Gimbal? I think you will be impressed because the results will be much better and it's also more compact and easier to handle. Maybe you can give it a try in near future...? At least: No! I am not working for the vendor, but we bought a G4 and we are really impressed how good it works :-)
