I loved the 28mm Nikkor lens on my full frame Nikon F Photomic Ftn camera about 50 (!) years ago. Now I'm buying this Sigma 28mm for my Canon R7, and so thank you Dustin. I prefer this focal length to the 35mm for an aps-c camera, but didn't know if it is as good as the Sigma 35mm 1.4. Your review, trustworthy and analytical as always, helped me decide in favor of the 28. I'm an active filmmaker in Athens, Greece. 🙂

Love these Meyer Optik like bokeh, and with modern sharpness. I already have few shots in mind .... but quite expensive ! Again, thanks for your great reviews, that's a lot of work you put in there.

Great content, as usual. I have found that 28 is my favorite for walk around. I am glad I learnt this before I had committed to the beau Sony 24mmf1.4. I have a samyang 24f2.8 and I just found myself always cropping my pictures. That is what told me, 24 was not for me.

It's interesting how we all "see" with a certain focal length. There's focal lengths that just work for some photographers but not others.

@@DustinAbbottTWI So true! It always shocks me a little bit when people say it's hard to use a telephoto lens like a 135 in normal situations. I personally find it so much easier than the a wide angle, even if I love the results of a wide angle shot just the same.

Arrived today😀. So far great. Only had to tweak the AF with the usb dock a little bit, -5 in the 1-∞ range so very minimal. I use it on a Nikon D500 so yes it is apsc sensor and that might sound strange. Well I was looking for a standard fast prime and 35mm on apsc is a bit to long. The 28mm behaves now as a FF 42mm equivalent and that field of view is for my taste great in terms of a standard lens. 50mm FF is often regarded as the standard focal length and the closest to the human eye etc.. but I can not really agree. As I said this I how I feel about it.

Hi Dustin, thank you for this review. In 2023, for Canon R5, how would this lens compare with Milvus 25mm 1.4? I don’t mind manual focus. In the past, I had done a blind test with Sigma 105mm vs Milvus 85mm and was surprised to see that every member of my family had preferred the Zeiss image over the one from Sigma.

Milvus lenses do have very nice rendering, though I will say that this 28mm is one of Sigma’s best in terms of optics.

That's a bit further than I would go, but certainly true with this lens.

I've had the Sony FE mount version for around 6 weeks and have shot a variety of weddings and PR gigs and the lens has been great. The Sony version is much bigger due to it having what looks like the MC11 adaptor added to the bottom of the lens and the size and weight is the only real negative. I own a Leica Q and love the focal length and wanted to have the 28mm for my Sony wedding set-up and this lens is bang on for what I want and need. At F2 this lens is as sharp as anything I have from the Sony GM line or the Zeiss line. At f1.4 the Zeiss 35mm Sony lens is sharper but at F2.. the 28mm has the edge.

That sounds very consistent with my experience, and you are right about the FE version. It essentially has a built-in MC-11 rather than being purpose-designed for mirrorless (which has a very different flange distance).

The focus on the 28mm and 40mm lenses isn't quite as refined as the DN (designed for mirrorless lenses), but optically the two lenses you mention are some of Sigma's best.

I discovered 28mm as a nice walk around in nature on my Nikon D810. Using the 1.2 and 1.5 crop modes cover 34 and 42 mm as well. Luckily Nikon has the 28mm f1.8 lense, which goes used in good conditions for 450 to 550 Euros in Germany. Sharpness might not be at the level of the Sigma.

Anyone with a Sony that is considering a lens in this range of 20-30mm, should just get the Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM. It’s a phenomenal lens and once I tried it and bought it I realized why it won lens of the year in a few publications. The size, weight, color, contrast, and sharpness are fantastic and actually one of the best features is that is fairly affordable for a Sony GM.

Hi Dustin, I learned from someone that this lens together with 40/1.4 and 105/1.4 are in the same group and have design and materials being used very similar to their cinematic brothers. I’ve just bought a 40/1.4 which can produce extremely sharp images while working on 5DsR and GFX 50R. Since you’ve tested both 28/1.4 and 40/1.4, do you think both lenses are of the same grade in most if not all aspects?

That's correct. The 28mm, 40mm, and 105mm are pretty much the best of the best for Sigma due to be designed first as cine lenses.

There is actually a Canon 28mm. The Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM. Very small and light. Still for sale.

My father has (had, because he doesn't use it anymore) an FD 28mm for his Canon A-1, along with a 50mm and what I consider would be a great lens: an FD 100-300 f/5.6 costant aperture! But if I had to buy a wide prime, for full frame I'd never consider a 28, too narrow for my likes, but for APS-C it is much more useful for general photography, since it's a 45 mm equivalent at least on Canon.

Tnx Dustin for this video, I'm in the market for a fast wide prime (in the 20-24-28-35 range) with fast and accurate AF for stills to use during (poorly illuminated) indoor events (in relatively 'confined' spaces) on a Canon 7DII. IS could be a benefit but lacking it is not a deal breaker either, as I will be shooting high speed, high fps anyway. Anything to advise ? I reckon Canon would give the best AF speed n accuracy; so I should be looking among its range but given your rich experience I thought it wouldn't harm asking for your lights. I have the Canon 16-35 f/4 IS and the Tamron 45 f/1.8 IS. Happy with both of their IQ, and AF ability in the aforementioned scenarios but I'm looking to go faster than f/1.8 if possible (without harm of AF s&a) and wider than 45mm. Tnx in advance, all the best.

If those lenses are working fine for you, I see no reason why this Sigma should not as well. It's definitely faster than the Tamron.

Dustin Abbott tnx Dustin, well I remember in your review of the f/1.4 35mm sigma v canon that the latter gave you 90%+ AF accuracy whereas sigma close to 60%. So is the newer 28mm sigma better than its older 35 for AF accuracy? Tnx

It would be on the large side, but if the 42mm equivalent focal length is what you are looking for, it will be nice and sharp.

@@johnkevin7992 I know that's an amazing lens, and actually I'm going to get that as well. Just wanted to see if this would be legit, only because I have some infatuation with full frame lenses. I just picked up the Sigma 19mm 2.8, and it's surprisingly impressive for the 200 dollar price tag it carries.

I'm in dilemma sort off. 24mm is my favorite focal length, i don't need further investigation to know it for sure. But... I want a sharp 24mm, really sharp. Cause i use it the most. And then nikon options fall short, Zeiss milvus 2500 euro (400 euro price hike last month) and no autofocus, or..... Sony 24mm. Nothing else has what i want. So compromise on focal length, and get the quality i want in this Art lens, or... buy mirrorless lens based on my preference, aka 24mm gm.

@@DustinAbbottTWI 24mm art is their weakest performer. Never bad in any way, but not exceptional imo, especially corners (an important thing for me). 28mm shows the performance i want. Zeiss milvus 25mm is an option, but manual focus and heavy and 2500 euro. So Sony 24mm GM is very tempting.
