As a long time viewer i must say your videos are awesome, just keeps getting better and better (already very good). Have had the A7Rii with GM lenses since release but also recently purchased the a6500. Love the form factor of the a6500 with the Sigma 16,30 and 56mm, finally some really good crop lenses. The 56mm is my favorite and it is so much lighter to haul around when you dont need the resolution or low light capability of the FF. You are my favorite youtube sony channel :) Keep up the good work in 2019 and keep those videos coming, happy new year from Norway!

I love how you referenced Tony Northrup's old video about Full Frame lenses on Crop bodies & perceptual mega pixels. Totally true. I see so many pros & reviewers on youtube rave about how sharp some FE lenses are on their crop body yet I'm thinking, "You'd likely get a sharper image & save money/weight if you just got a good crop lens instead." Anyway, thanks for being one of the few who understand this concept.
@davidteer80
@davidteer80 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the lens. Lower quality lenses perform poorly on apsc since you are cropping a poor picture to begin with. Good quality glass like the gm series will be an excellent option if you can afford them. My Tamron 28-75 is sharper on my a6500 than any of my apsc zooms
@caldera878
@caldera878 5 жыл бұрын
FF lenses would normally be better on crop sensors because the smaller sensor is only capable of using the good central parts of the FF lens image circle.
@ikoyDaPnoy
@ikoyDaPnoy 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidteer80 Agreed but putting a full frame lens (poor or great quality) on a full frame body will always give you sharper/better results than putting on that SAME lens on an APS-C body (unless you use a speedbooster).
@ikoyDaPnoy
@ikoyDaPnoy 5 жыл бұрын
@@caldera878 A misconception. Putting a full frame lens (poor or great quality) on a full frame body will always give you sharper/better results than putting on that SAME lens on an APS-C body (unless you use a speedbooster). Tony Northrup explains it better in the video Jason referenced but here's a quick explaination. Any given lens is able to resolve a certain amount of megapixels. Every lens has micro-imperfections in the way light transitions to the sensor (due to refraction, front/rear surface smoothness, etc.), therefore, even Otus lenses can never reach/resolve 100% sharpness. The higher the lens quality, however, the closer it gets to 100%. When using a smaller sensor, a smaller section (the center) of the lens is used. As a result, any imperfections is exaggerated. Think of aiming a laser at a hotel window a mile away. Any 1mm movement your hand moves makes the laser at the hotel move by several meters or more. Make the window smaller & those errors will amplify. Also notice the laser dot is about the same size a few feet away but it gets noticeably larger a mile away. Likewise, any micro-imperfections will be amplified/exacerbated when using a smaller part of the lens because you are essentially cropping into the imperfections making them larger.
@TizOnly1
@TizOnly1 5 жыл бұрын
@@ikoyDaPnoy nonsense. Also that Tony Northrup video was nonsense. And Jason's explanation here is also.. wait for it.. nonsense. Putting a full frame lens on a crop body is absolutely NOT like a digital zoom. At all. On any level. What I really think is that the misconception about full frame lenses on crop bodies stems from the difference in pixel pitch for older FF sensors, versus that of the crop sensors. In the not too distant past, typical full frame sensors were topping out in the 20-30 MP range, while at the same time, crop sensors were topping out around 24 MP. Meaning, crop sensors were actually showing MORE detail per unit area. The problem is that, up until quite recently, our lenses were resolving like shit. All the crop sensors were doing, was exposing how poorly our lenses were resolving, and our full frame sensors just weren't good enough to do that, so we thought they looked better. In a world in which today we have full frame lenses that out-resolve even our highest MP full frame sensors, this is no longer the case. So now, if you were to throw a top level FF lens onto a high MP FF camera (D850, A7RIII, Z7, etc.), and put that same lens onto a standard 20-24 MP crop sensor camera, you'd likely get VERY similar (read- almost identical) results (at least at the center of the FF sensor, where the full crop sensor image would lie.. obviously there's be fall-off further out towards the edges of the FF image). I'm really shocked that this FF/Crop misconception even still exists, with so many amazing crop sensor options out there now.. and so many high megapixel FF options that REALLY mirror crop sensors in their performance issues (since they share similar pixel density).

@ProducedbyAleex
@ProducedbyAleex 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's clear as day, that if you're looking to stick with a sony a6500 for a while, then the sigma wins hands down, but if you're trying to save money, then the difference between the sony and the sigma is negligible and the OSS is a lifesaver if you're using an a6000/6300. For me I knew I was only using an APS-C camera temporarily, so I bought full-frame lenses to use when I eventually upgraded to the a7iii. If I didn't care about upgrading to the a7iii, I probably would've stuck with APS-C lenses, the decision's simply about what you want to do with your gear!

Wow Jason just the information I was looking for. I have a a6500 and purchased a 56mm sigma as a Christmas gift for myself since it got raved reviews :D But I am really looking at going full frame and getting at A7III in the new year. I was debating should I still keep the 56mm sigma for the A6500 or would it be a waste of money. But it seems like you answered my question exactly. I should consider just buying the Zeiss 55mm instead so I can use it both on APS-C and FF! This means I can use it on the A7iii at 55mm or use it on the a6500 as roughly a 85mm equivalent. Would there be any other reason besides price to keep the 56mm sigma? Thanks again and Happy New Year!

I bought my Sony 50mm f/1.8 OSS crop sensor lens for right around $200 dollars used. That is a smidgen of what the other two lenses cost (and only a portion of what the Sony lens cost new). I am quite happy with the OSS lens and it suits my needs perfectly. I also use a Sony 85mm f/1.8 lens on my A6500 and like the results very much... I enjoy portraiture and might someday grab a used 56mm Sigma if one ever comes available. I also have several legacy lenses which I like for portraiture...

girls like a softer skin, so, I'll probably stick on e50 in 2019. BTW Happy New Year!

You should do a video comparing all 3 sigma lenses 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm. Like which lense would be good for specific situations or styles!!

had the zeiss 55mm, but sold it to get the sigma 56.4 & some extra $ towards the sigma 35.4 FE. Have the flare issue on my 56.4 (not sure if that's all copies of the lens), but it's fixed by using the hood.

thanks for the review .... I only wish sigma would bring out some purpose built sony full frame lenses.. as the canon & mc11 adapter combo mash up sony emount are to big & dont all work that great..!

Hi Jason. I’m new to your KZfaq channel. Watched a few videos on what lens is beast. But still contemplating. Can you help me pick which lens is best use for street/portraits photography please? Thanks. Or maybe just a lens multi use for all- with a very sharp focus like perfection. I’m a clutz when changing lenses. lol. So I try my best to carry atleast 1 with me. 50mm or 85mm or 40mm? I own a sony a7iii. Thanks! Please get back to me asap. I’ve watched your video on the Tameron and ZBatis lens. Which one is better for my photography need? Any recommendations?
