Looking for the best portrait lens for the Sony a6500, a6400, or a6300? Look no further than the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN lens for the Sony E-Mount system. On an APS-C bodyy, this lens is a full-frame equivalent of an 85mm (84mm, close enough!) focal length. If you're looking for a compact and lightweight portrait lens that delivers super sharp images with soft and pleasant bokeh - you might want to check out the Sigma 56mm f1.4!

CORRECTION: At 7:50, I said "you're letting in over twice the amount of light that you would be able to shoot at f/2.8", however, as user @dweberss pointed out, it's actually over *4x the amount of light.* What I meant to say was you're getting two extra stops of light (which equates to 4x the amount of light). *Question!* What did you think of the video and what did you think of the Sigma 56?

Yesterday I shot an entire family portrait outdoors using the a6600 and Sigma 56 1.4. Nothing beats this lens. It behaves like a zoom when I take images I shot from 15-20 feet away but crop them in post. It is so sharp you wouldn't know it was a crop. Great bokeh.

I think it'd work very well for interview styled shots (or like my review monologue), however, just keep in mind you'll need about 5-10 feet between the camera and the speaker (depending on the composition you want), but if you have the space, it'd look very good for that use case!

I shoot with both the Sony 50mm f/2.8 OSS and Sony 85mm f/1.8 lenses and I am quite happy with the results. However, if the 56mm Sigma f/1.4 had been available I might have chosen that lens over both lenses that I presently use. I shoot with 2-bodies so I can switch back and forth between focal lengths easily...

RyanJS08 I use a cheap variable ND (I know, throwing away all that sharpness by using a budget ND filter but that’s neither here nor there 😂). But, I use it on the 16mm when I’m traveling and vlogging to keep my aperture open, shutter speed down at 1/60 or 1/250 (depending on the FPS I’m shooting in) and exposure controlled! I’d recommend it if you shoot a lot outside!

great video! but i don't understand, this lens is an aps-c lens no? 1.5 crop factor happens when using a full frame lens on an aps-c sensor body no?
@DavidZhou
@DavidZhou 5 жыл бұрын
All focal lengths are the same (that is, what it is stated on the box/lens), so a 56mm focal length is, optically, 56mm. However, because it is built for an APS-C body (the rear side that connects to the camera) only has enough coverage to fully expose an APS-C sensor. Now, due to the fact that an APS-C sensor is 1.5x smaller than a 35mm (full frame) sensor, it's effectively "cropping" the 56mm focal length to effectively an 84mm focal length. I hope that makes sense!

Sony 50mm f1.8 vs sigma 56mm 1.4 . which one you recommend ?
@DavidZhou
@DavidZhou 5 жыл бұрын
I personally didn't own the Sony 50mm f/1.8 but my other photographer colleagues who did noted that the auto-focus was very slow compared to other lenses they owned. Image quality will be marginally inferior, *however*, you can get the Sony 50mm f/1.8 used for less than $250. If you're looking to do portraits professionally, I'd recommend investing in the 56mm f/1.4 or something more telephoto *but*, if you're just dabbling with the new focal length, it definitely could be a better value proposition to go for a used Sony 50mm f/1.8. If I had to pick between the two, I'd get the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 - hope that helps!

@@lorenzoocchipinti9120 Depends on what you're shooting, the 35mm will be noticeably wider BUT if you're shooting video, that's honestly a good thing *most* of the time. So, if you're heavy on videos, the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS, if you're focused on portrait photography / need a lens that does close-up videos (think, interviews) and you can keep your camera on a tripod or gimbal a lot, then the Sigma 56mm f/1.4!

@saifaldin_
@saifaldin_ 2 жыл бұрын
The Sigma is sharper and has better AF than the Sony, but the Sony is no slouch. It was one of the sharpest Sony APS-C lens before the Sigmas came out. The Sony has more CA wide open, and slightly worse focusing in low light, but it has OSS and is way cheaper than the SIgma. For my copies of these two lenses, the Sony was almost a quarter the price of the Sigma.

@Pyndle
@Pyndle 4 жыл бұрын
Why is nobody comparing the full frame 85mm on APS-C vs that 56mm on APS-C ?! :( I'm using the Sony 85mm F1.8 on my A6500 and I can't figure out if I should switch to that 56mm or not. The zoom of the 85mm on aps-c is a bit annoying to work with but I'm pretty sure the bokeh is better, can't find comparisons :(
@DavidZhou
@DavidZhou 4 жыл бұрын
Bokeh is hard to compare at different focal lengths due to compression as the 56 f/1.4 has a wider f-stop but the 85 f/1.8 is a longer focal length which will have more compression. Both of these factors contribute to a more blown out background. The real question here is if you like the focal length of 85 on an APS-C a lot, or if you want something wider to work with. I'd really base your decision on that!

@@DavidZhou Thanks for the reply. I kind of see things differently, I want the best portrait lens for the A6500 and for a proper photo shoot (not just some stolen pictures in the street), I can work with most distances (of course I don't want to have a 400mm and be 100m away from my subject, and yes 56mm is a bit easier than 85mm, but you get my point). I already have the 85mm and I just bought the 56mm, I'll compare both and see which one I like best (and sell the other one). Quality of bokeh is the key for a portrait lens. I was just surprised to see that nobody else seems to have the same problem (based on forums and what tests youtubers are doing basically).

The shots out on the trail jogging were shot with the a6500 + Sigma 56, the product shots were shot on the a7iii + Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM. Hope that helps!

@@asura02 The lower the frames per second / Mbps, the better the quality will be, because more data is written to each frame!

To be fair, you should have made comparison shots between the Sigma 56 and the Sony 85 GM at the same _relative_ aperture. That is with crop factor applied to the aperture also. The Sigma 56 at ƒ/1.4 is same as Sony 85 at ƒ/2.0 as regards as DOF and Bokeh. As you can't have the equivalent FF ƒ/1.4 on the Sigma (that would be ƒ/0.9 !) you'll never have the same amount of Bokeh wide open. Yet, it's certainly more than "good enough" as it is also much much cheaper.

That's where I'd attribute the difference in image "character" between the two shots at 4:52! You're right though, it's not an equivalent comparison, but rather the settings I'd shoot portraits on with either setup (if you buy an expensive f/1.4 lens, you tend to want to use it for f/1.4 as much as you can), so the difference is what I'd experience in a real shoot (because I'd open my lens as wide as I could), but for an IQ comparison, I agree I should've done another shot with the Sony 85 GM stopped down to f/2!
