Great review, thank you. I do not see bird photographers rushing out to sell their 200-600 however. The Sigma is heavier, much more expensive (here in the UK anyway), unbalanced on tripods, horrible extension to lens body when zooming, and a so-so build quality - all compared to the 200-600. The 200-600 is so well built, lighter, sharp, quick & silent auto-focus and at a a great price. I've never really used anything less than 200mm as a commercial bird photographer (wild birds) in 25 years. The 200-600mm is also very nearly comparable to my Sony 600mm f4 at f6.3 in terms of sharpness and autofocus speed.

For me, the promary reason to have a zoom with 500 or 600mm focal length is to get the long end of the range. Getting the shorter end comes in handy, but I buy it for the reach and that's where I want the best performance.

Amazing review, and I have the 200-600mm and think it's the better one mainly for weather sealing. But might as well buy the Sigma if I get another Sony body or if I can only carry one lens as 60mm on a full frame is wide enough in most cases and the insane close focusing distance.

Most of the other reviews are saying this lens is less sharp then the 150-600 and the 150-600 is definitely less sharp than the 200-600, I've personal experience of that. Not seen any lens to beat the 200-600 on sharpness except big primes.

Yeah for the same price, it's not an argument. Sony all the way. The extendable lenses are wack. However, a 150-600 sigma C For less than half the price, then it may be worth it on a budget.
@Jabber-ig3iw
@Jabber-ig3iw 7 ай бұрын
@@sonofnothing not necessarily, like they said at times animals come really close to you and 60mm is way better than 200mm. Changing lenses repeatedly is a PITA, 2 cameras with 2 lenses is expensive so 60-600 is way more versatile than 200-600. I really want the Sony but the dilemma is the Sigma is way more versatile.

60-600 is a great range for shooting baseball! I sometimes can't use my 200-600G because I can't shoot the nearest base or the batters. But what I really want is a 150-400/4 w/o image stabilization (for lighter weight). That way I can use the lens under the lights also.

For sure. My sigma 100-400 was pretty useful but realized how much the AF was lacking once I got my 200-600. Sounds like this 60-600 would fix the focus. 200mm is definitely too tight within half a base line, but I would miss the small zoom throw of the 200-600. Compromise either way but the 60-600 would be a compelling all around lens.

I have the 200-600 and when I want something more compact I use the 100-400 Sony or the 150-500 tamron. This new sigma looks good for people who only want one lens from short to long but the weight is off putting. It’s a do all the things slightly less well sort of lens but it looks sharp and well made. Such a positive to have so many good lenses from Sony and third parties. It’s good to see an improvement over the previous sigma 150-600 for Sony e as that was very disappointing AF wise. At the same price as this new sigma for wildlife the sony 200-600 still represents great value.

While the Sigma is great for wildlife, you missed the opportunity to discuss what to my mind is one of the biggest advantages of the extra range on the short side. If you are photographing sports (football, lacrosse, field hockey) the action frequently moves quickly from close to the sideline you are standing by to the far end zone, or vice versa. With this lens you can get close ups of both the quarterback throwing the pass 15 yard from where you are standing, and then the reception 60 yards away.

I've used the Sigma 50-500 and Tony is correct...when used in the field over long periods of time dust does get in internally. I've used this lens all around the world filming wildlife professionally and saw this first hand. I tried to send it in for cleaning and was told that the internal workings had a sticky coating and therefore they are unable to clean the lens. Having dust spots grow as you zoom in created longer editing time! I'm looking forward to trying the 60-600

That was my same question, Tony and Chelsea. I just returned from a Safari in Kenya and really enjoyed shooting on the Tamron 150-500 but I wonder if I would have been better served by a lens with teleconverter support. There is no official teleconverter support for a third-party, super telephoto, or e-mount lense; as far as I know. However, I'm curious if any of the lenses will simply work with a sony or third-party teleconverter.

Hello Tony & Chelsea, I am a wildlife photographer that does a lot of wildlife photography and videography in the backcountry of Colorado. I am planning to buy either this lens or the Sony in the near future. Due to my shooting style I really am interested in the sigma more because I like to shoot wide images of wildlife to show context and a scene as well as portraits of animals. The only thing possibly keeping me from pulling the trigger on the sigma is I’ve heard mixed thoughts about image quality. I will gladly switch back and forth lenses if it means the image quality will be noticeably better especially at the tighter zoom ranges 400-600. In your experience shooting with this lens in real world scenarios do you think it would be a noticeable difference in image quality that will make me regret not opting for the Sony?

wow, never knew how much focus breathing could affect those super telephotos, that's nuts.

Tony & Chelsea, I always love your practical sensible reviews and always feel I can trust them. Regarding the limitation in FPS (on the A1) I recently read Sony categorically claiming the limitation applied to third party lenses is the fault of those third parties and not Sony. However, that being said, is not limiting a product like this anti-competitive and anti-customer/consumer? I thought Apple had been penalised for the same activity?

I relate to the uneven weight distribution problem quite well. After years of wanting a great FF setup, I've gotten into the Sony + Tamron/sigma ecosystem quite nicely so far. Taking the 150-600 to things like lime rock park, laguna seca, plane spotting etc. You definitely notice it. I shoot it primarily on a monopod at a track and the way you have to adjust when reaching and trying to track subjects is something I've yet to master.. But I'll get there.

I notice the Sony is bigger diameter.Does that affect the difference in light that gets into the camera?

Does anyone know if this lens limits the frame rate on the Sony A7R family of cameras?

So...the Sigma is for mirrorless cameras? I missed that DC DN discussion at the start.

I enjoy your videos and the way the product is tested. I have the sony A74 and learned a lot from the tutorial you filmed. This past week I bought the 200-600 from Sony and have yet to start shooting. You are a nice couple and wish you all the best of luck. I am 69 and can finally spend enough time shooting. Love you both. Fred van Schaagen from the Netherlands.

I prefer clearly the Sony 200-600mm. I did not purchase a Sony A1 to mess around with 15fps only with a Tamron or Sigma lens.

Can you do a review experiment with IPhone 14 pro 3x telephoto plus Swarovski nl pure 10x42 binocular combination? The zoom and image quality are amazing with this combo. Plus you get to use the “lens” as binoculars when not attached to the “camera”. The image quality is shockingly good.

Quick question, I shoot with a6400 and the best lens that I have used so far is Tamron 18-300 but now I like more reach than 300 but I can't find something for crop sensor cameras. What lens would you suggest for extra reach?

For sports a subtle but underestimated advantage of the Sony is the quick accurate short throw zoom. But that 60-200 range would be super nice when they run to the nearest base. The 200 on the Sony can’t be closer than about half a baseline. Does the sigma zoom in clockwise? The 100-400 was counter-clockwise and I never could wrap my head around it. Push pull works much better but still not near as well as the Sony zoom. Fast but harder to be accurate, always feels a little clunky.
