Hey everyone, I wanted to talk a little bit about the Sigma f1.4 Prime lenses and compare them to the Olympus 1.8 Premium prime trinity!
If you want a very detailed video of the Sigma set. I’d like to refer you to Rhett Thompsons review of the set. He did a fantastic job reviewing and covering everything about the set.
I really just want to cover my opinions of these two sets per my experiences.
I’ll show a few general tests as well.

I've been waiting for this! Im so hyped about this comparison because these lenses both really represent the best value I think for MFT.

Yea...it did take me a WHILE! I wish i just did in August when I shot it because it was SO hard to remember and my notes to myself is SO hard to read! lol but it's finally out of my hard drive!

Oh that Oly 45mm f1.8, how could you say anything negative about it!?! 😉 It was the first m43 lens I owned. I don't use mine much now but somehow I like having it around.

Nothing negative! lol I just don't find a need for it! I'm trying to declutter, so I figured shoot a quick video before getting rid of things. I have too much stuff and the 40-150 pro is much more useful to me.

Well maybe one day I'll be able to afford all of the lenses to do this. But at the moment. I'm down to just what I've show in the video plus a cheap Oly 9-18 and $100 8mm from SLR I believe. Oh and some plastic lenses from LOMO that were $30.

Great video! Since I got it, I was stuck with Sigma 56mm. What a gem. Which camera do you use for video? OM-1? And one another question. I'm owning the EM1 mk2 and looking for B cam. What do you suggest?

For work I use a Sony FX3 but for personal content I still use my Olympus E-M1 Mark II. However, I've recently picked up a GH6 for a great deal! I did have the OM-1 but had to sell it because it does not have the codecs required for a lot of the jobs that I pick up. It only shoots 10-bit in HEVC and that's it. Most jobs require much higher codecs and bitrates. Also, the LOG doesn't give the camera much in terms of Dynamic Range. For a B-Cam, I would honestly say just get another E-M1 Mark II if you can grab one since they're so cheap at the moment. There's no benefit to go with an E-M1 Mark III or X. The E-M5 Mark III could work if you're ok with only shooting flat which I'd be ok with personally. BUT you could ALSO grab a GH5 and use that as the MAIN cam. The GH5 with VLOG-L has much more dynamic range in video and it's easier to match GH5 footage to E-M1.2 since the codec is much more flexible.

Sigma are APS-C lenses with a mft mount.
@AlpacoFilms
@AlpacoFilms 7 ай бұрын
Yea that's the biggest disadvantage but I don't expect any company to waste money on designing for ONLY MFT. That's a big ask especially when most buyers will lean towards getting first party lenses. But the advantage is it IS cheaper to find used now! So, I don't mind. I personally think MORE companies should just remount APSC lenses for MFT. That'll make it so cheap for everyone AND that'll give US MFT users a chance to use telephoto lenses that aren't $8000 but have similar reach and speed. Sure it'll be a little larger but it'll be a lot cheaper.

@@AlpacoFilmsStill I don't think it is fair to compare 1.4 APSC lenses with MFT 1.8 lenses with different price tag and different focus length.

I get that, these are what I own at the time. I was only doing this while I had all of them at the same time before I sold them.

@@manichaean1888 As long as it serves the same purpose (Lumix 14mm f/2.5, Leica 15mm f/1.7, Sigma 16mm f/1.4, Olympus 17mm f/1.8, Olympus 17mm f/1.2 = "Street", Lumix 25mm f/1.7, Leica 25mm f/1.4, Olympus 25mm f/1.8, Olympus 25mm f/1.2 PRO, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 = "Standard", Lumix 42.5mm f/1.7, Leica 42.5mm f/1.2, Leica 45mm f/2.8 Macro, Olympus 45mm f/1.8, Olympus 45mm f/1.2, and Sigma 56mm f/1.4 = "Medium Portrait"), it's fair game, because most likely people will only buy or use one of each.

Is it just me or is the Olympus 25mm way more contrasty than the 30mm?
@AlpacoFilms
@AlpacoFilms 7 ай бұрын
It's NOT just you. ALL the Oly's are more contrasty. I don't know why I thought I mentioned it. It's in my notes but it's so hard to get everything in one go. But yea. ALL the Sigma's are flatter than the Oly's. The Sigma's are also more uniform in look compared to the Oly's. The 17mm seems to pop a bit reds and stuff similar to Canon L-lenses from the earlier EF-mount era. The 45mm is least contrasty of the trio.

@@AlpacoFilms oh hey you probably did and I probably missed it. Really interesting finding! Hadn’t noticed the reds with the 17mm, definitely have with the older canon glass. I did side by side sharpness tests with the 45mm 1.8 and the 12-100, the 45mm 1.8 had a very slight magenta cast compared to the zoom! I definitely turned the tv etc. off so that wouldn’t affect it but it was there.
