Listen up..we may have different ancestral/tribal/clan origins (e.g. mine is Bedi, just like Guru Nanak ji), but it does not mean we have a caste or are practising casteism, and should not interfere with the way we deal with each other. We are all humans. Caste is nothing but occupation. If subcontinental people wish to classify us as a caste, then ALL SIKHS are a combination of Brahmin and Kshatriya, because we are all SAINT SOLDIERS. Kalidas, rishi valmiki, ved vyas, vishvamitra, none was brahmin but are the greatest intellectuals of vedic tradition. Caste is not part of vedas, it is part of indian culture and we can change it. Under the false Hindu Caste system, Zamini Tutoos were low caste (shudar) and not allowed in Hindu temples. They begged to enter, but pundits denied them entry to Hindu temples. Then Satgur Baba Nanak came. Satgur eliminated the caste system. Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji established Sikh Religion and brought equality to all castes. Some prominent castes among Sikhs are Arora, Khatri, Ramgarhia, Jat, Saini, Kamboh, Mahton, Chhimba, Mohyal , Chamar, etc. Each caste has its sphere of influence and specialization.

The big difference is that sikh scriptures are anti caste system and hindu scriptures are pro caste system. So its not in our roots. Youngsters are growing out of It I believe with the SGGSji translation available. People are reading what sikhi really is about & follow Guru.

From the Gita, The emphasis is on guna (aptitude) and karma (function) and not on jaati (birth). The varna or the order to which we belong is independent of sex, birth or breeding. A varna is determined by temperament and vocation - not by birth or heredity.

A co-worker told me that eastindian boys are discriminating against other eastindian boys based on last name and caste. This is happening in Edmonton Alberta Canada.He asked why students in (Tempo-School) bully other students using their last name and caste.His other question was if caste an issue in Indian society in Canada. I told him it is the singers and song writers, also the film industry of Punjab is also to blame, which promotes caste ideology and a gang culture. it is against Sikhs to practice caste based hate which is nothing less than racism. How can we ask for equality when some of us discriminate based on caste. i am posting this on face book in hopes leaders of Gurdwaras and Sikh schools will discuss this matter of our youth forsaking Sikhism and walking on the the wrong path of discrimination that is caste based. Very nice explanation; but from exp I have notice major diff in common values of people in diff cast systems. I know most of you say no it depends on person to person. But I believe that when you stay in the circle of your cast system you also adopt some of the values (good or bad) And when you interact/marry with other cast you will have conflict. Caste system is not Indian system. Casta is a Portuguese word. Caste system is rigid and European. Varna system is Indian and flexible and not based on birth.

Sikhism has caste system only because of one reason. The reason is they intermarry with Caste Hindus. As a Sikh we don't believe in caste system but when a Hindu girl came in our home after marriage, things changed. They are biased to certain castes which is evident in their behaviour, subsequently this bias percolate down to next generation and despite borned into Sikh family, their behaviour with other castes remain same. If we had to stop Casteism in sikhism, we had to stop intermarriages with caste Hindus

Caste system is not rigid. Today there are people from all backgrounds, white, afro Caribbean, Chinese training up to be priests and have been doing it for decades. A carpenter only begets carpenter children doesn't sound logical does it? Or a doctor's son/daughter will also have a natural interest in medicine so will also end up as doctors, not logical. Today children from all backgrounds are choosing various careers which are totally different from their ancestors. Your understanding of the Hindu caste system is blatantly wrong. 1. There's not just 4 major types. It's incredibly complex. Some conservative estimates suggest the numbers to be around 3000. Majority of whom do not fall in the 4 major castes mentioned here. 2. Caste is not linked to enlightenment. There is no such religious sanction in Vedas or any authoritative Hindu texts. 3. Varna system in ancient Bharat was linked to work and was not a 'system' for exploitation as suggested here. Many castes which are labeled 'lower' have been integral to the functioning if the society. And do it to this day. 4. Caste is social thing. From a religious POV, there's many paths for enlightenment in Hinduism which have nothing to caste. Including, following of Dharma, Karma, Bhakti, Yoga, Tantra, learning through a Guru, service and many others. 5. The castes have been segregated in higher and lower because of the superimposition of class system imported from the colonials, who saw the caste system as a class system and started favouring one over the others. Including recorded usage of caste movement as an incentive to mobilize sections of Indian society 6. It's becoming an increasingly irrelevant part of modern Hindu religion and society but caste identities will always exist. because caste is not just an exploitative system. It's a legitimate way to preserve vocational knowledge passed from one generation to the other. It's no coincidence that Khashtriyas are good at fighting or baniyas are good with money. They preserve and pass on this knowledge. Those who value these knowledge systems and culture will preserve it anyway.

And I want to add something to my earlier comment after reading some comments regarding Caste issue creating problem in marrying. Hinduism only request and emphasize to practise Gotra system. Gotra's remains same even if one change its Varn ( trade). For example: A brahmin can change its Varn to shudra( vice- versa). But, he/she should keep the same Gotra. Same Gotra marriages were not allowed to have a good Gene Pool for healthy off spring and healthy society.

Khatris were never Kshatriyas ! This is a baseless argument given by various Punjabis but - 1. Khatris never had a single kingdom throughout history and have no historic records before Sikhi. 2. The father of Guru Nanak was a humble shopkeeper, not a king or a warrior. 3. Throughout the history of Punjab, it was the Jats who went fighting the invaders, be it Ghazni, Ghori, Taimur or Babar, never khatris. 4. Making Khatri a synonym for Kshatriya just because it rhymes is funny and shows the lack of basic understanding of the history of Punjab. 5. Khatris were always cloth weavers and shopkeepers who had no native home and kept going from one place to another looking for work, in the case of Punjab - becoming shopkeepers in Jat villages. 6. Khatris mostly call themselves Punjabis instead of Khatris but technically they were outsiders to Punjab and are actually found throughout India - Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Gujrat, Maharashtra etc. 7. Rajputs never considered Khatris as Kshatriyas and never had any marriage alliances with Khatris(they never had a royal family) 8. Banias don't consider Khatris as Vaishyas and don't intermarry with them. Hence Khatris are an Avarna caste and are of mixed origins as their name reflects their occupational history and not race or varna. The word Khatri could have originated from Khaata (book keeping) or Khattar (cloth) occupations. Jats uplifted SIkhi, not the other way ! Sikhi is nothing but Baman-Bhappa propaganda which propagates the same dumb Vedic and puranic ideas for which innocent Jats fell. The history of Punjab and Northwest is the history of Buddha, Kushans & Harsha, know your past brothers and sisters ! We were all Shramanas, the people who discovered Dhyan, Samadhi, Yoga, and Ayurveda from which Brahmins learned and then completely destroyed the Shraman culture, the original culture of the subcontinent. 1. Budhha was not a Hindu, but they tried to call him Kshatriyas just like Guru Nanak. 2. Buddhist archaeology pre dates Hindu archaeology by centuries. 3. Hinduism is a casteist religion with its scriptures not Sikhism. Still caste system is prevalent in Sikhs unfortunately

With all due respects, The so called caste system exists because the society is feudal in nature. Neither is India nor punjab industrialized. Yes India has some industries but large parts of the economy are still feudal. As long as their is no industrialization, the so called caste system will not go away. Do you know that around 30% of so called low caste punjabis own less than 5% of the agricultural land in Punjab ? The only way to bridge this divide is by industrializing, build infrastructure, schools etc and level the playing field so that everybody gets a fair opportunities.
