Today let's look at the 2016 film by filmmaker Martin Scorsese, Silence. Here I go over my general feelings and what I think the film is trying to say. Please comment below whether you've seen it and enjoyed it in the same or different way I did.

I think the movie is very much about dealing with faith or belief in a place where the ruling class never wanted or even seek to eradicate it. With historical hindsight, we knew that all their concern about instability and foreign domination was unfounded. As it was Japan who devolved into civil war then imperialise Asia by itself, when it suited its ruling class. The japanese christian was also shown to have lived very poor, hard lives all the way from their living place, diets to their body. And those who already apostatised was tortured to break the priests despite a promised release. The inquisitor's parable used a daimyo, a feudal lord, not a peasant or even a rich man without special status. The irony of the 4 wives then barren wife parable was shown later in the movie, when japan did settle on one wife: the Dutch. The inquisitor's concern lies with the power hierarchy he operate under, not the population. It's normal and appropriate for the time period, yes. But it is a point I never seen brought up in discourse surrounding this movie.

Sasageyo lol The Japanese were ruthless, they occupied my country during WWII, killed millions of us and r@p3d many women. But because of forgiveness, my people moved on from that. It's 2024, we never asked for reparations, and yeah we're an anime obsessed country and we love love love Japan.
