So I got a lot of birch for spooncarving. Today I split a log and when carving I noticed dark spots and streaks in the wood... some green or brownish... these spots are about as big as a nails head, anyone knows what this might be?

Every time I watch one of these I curse myself for jumping straight into working with reclaimed wood, and not spending more time on green wood carving... that said, the upside is that I've been forced to get a lot stronger than I might have been otherwise! (Not that wood quality is everything, but even with my tools blisteringly sharp I sometimes have to work so much harder to get clean cuts like these).
