Silent Hill 2 is a Konami game from 2001.
It's a psychological horror game that's often been praised as the best in the medium.
In this video, we go through all of it and discuss a range of subjects like: mechanics, visuals, development history, psychology, influences, etc.
Apologies for any repetitions (if there are any).
I went over the script and the finished video but there's always a chance that something slipped through.

I cry every time I finish this game at Mary's letter in the end. My mom died of cancer, it was slow and painfull, and I see what that did to my step dad (that I love more than my real dad). I totally can imagine Mary's last words in that letter being my mom's last words to my step dad too, so to me this game touches my soul in a personal level. This game is a masterpiece not only in the video game media, this game is a masterpiece that will live forever. Thanks for your effort, I've watched the whole video and you deserve at least a million views.

Since making this video I've gotten to talk to Masahiro Ito. I asked him about the red squares and unfortunately, he claims to not know what they mean. But that's sorta life y'know? Not everything means something else, sometimes a red square is just a timesaving texture. (And sometimes it's a LIE ITO, I KNOW YOU'RE HOLDING BACK!)

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure I've read one of the developers (in Translated Memories maybe) say the red squares were part of SH2's more overall surrealist design. Elements like the red squares were meant to stand out to the player as being enigmatic, as a way to give the entire game a sense of feeling 'off'. Lots of small subtle details that don't logically make sense. So there was no literal meaning beyond building this world where everything doesn't quite make sense, the closer you look at it.

I was pretty sure I posted this last night so forgive me if this is a double post. When you mention water as a running theme in the game I think that has to do with a Shinto belief called kegare. The term means polluted or unclean and revolves around a spiritual relation between water, blood, and death. Basically running water is viewed very positively, useful for drinking and cleaning. Stagnant water however is viewed as kegare, spiritually dirty. That's not the kind of dirty you can clean off easily either. Kegare is something that sticks with a place or a person. It's essentially like being haunted but not by a literal ghost but by very negative energy brought about by some kind of sin or taboo. So when you fall into the well in the historical society, trudge through the mud in the labyrinth, or go through the flooded hotel basement you're basically seeing a visual metaphor that indicates the place is evil or haunted, the dirtier the water the truer that is.
@AesirAesthetics
@AesirAesthetics 6 жыл бұрын
Huh, that's very interesting.
@entropicplays162
@entropicplays162 4 жыл бұрын
To add on this, but water is a Jungian and Freudian concept to describe the subconscious, and I'm genuinely surprised you missed out on this. There's a reason why the labyrinth underneath the Historical Society goes down and as the further you go, the more crazy the world becomes as well. It symbolizes the passing of the conscious and thus also the logical mind, down into the chaos that is subconsciousness. In dream analysis Jung thought that if you dreamt about water you were in touch with your subconsciousness, which could mean many different things depending the context in which the water appeared in the dream. An example would be drinking water from a well to incur wisdom, which means revealing something previously only known within the subconsciousness to the conscious ego. The larger the body of water, the more you're in touch with your subconscious. I also believe this describes the meaning of the boat scene well and why it acts as a transition between the different worlds, because if James repressed his memories, then they can only be retrieved from traveling down to the core of his subconscious mind. Traveling by boat is thus James having finally reached the depths of his subconsciousness and is now leaving the conscious mind behind, which is why the Lakeside Hotel looks and feels so different from the other areas in the game. That it's a lake is of course representative of the depths and overall presence of his subconsciousness; and the mist would in this situation also describe James' confused and uncertain state of mind. I do believe it's also simply a game design choice to limit the need for further environmental design, but it also does fit in order to convey something about the character and the journey he's currently on. There's also of course the undeniable comparison between the ferryman traveling across the River of Death or how dead and lost souls must travel across the river of Styx in Greek mythology, which links water to have a connection to death (and rebirth) as well, which of course is one of the most central game themes. I think that's better described by the act of ego death however, and I do think James finally overcoming his guilt can certainly be seen as a form of ego death. I know you said you wanted to do a lighter game for your next entry (whenever there is one), but I'd love for your take on Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I think it's the only modern game that probably comes emotionally close in terms of overall narrative intensity to Silent Hill 2, and in retrospect having played that game as well, I can actually see a lot of similarities in game design choices between Hellblade and SH2.

James' story genuinely horrified me, and watching your documentary was amazing but also painful because it brought up the same old feelings I felt the first time going through Silent Hill 2. I had to live with and inevitably care for my grandmother, dealing with her emotional manipulation and verbal abuse while she slipped from psychotic and argumentative where no amount of effort was good enough, to happy and clueless. What made it all the more difficult was that English was her second language so sometimes her dialog and in most cases, arguments, where this slow and clunky outbursts much like what you'd hear in the game. I don't hate her for what she put me through, she's old and I don't believe she's entirely aware of herself anymore, I had a choice between living with her or being homeless, and I don't doubt that I am a stronger person for dealing with her for so long, but I do hate the time we had together.

14:30 The player is given a goal right after the intro: to get to Rosewater Park. If they focus entirely on that, using the map to plan out a route, they hit one dead end after another, eventually getting to the motor home with a message about Neely's Bar in it, leading to a new map showing the apartment key and the route through the building. While ignoring the map and just wandering around at random can lead to finding the apartment key, the only reason to go there is that ignoring the map leaves them with nowhere else to go. So whether James has a clear goal or not depends on the player's approach to the situation.

I know this is old now, however yesterday I finished this game for the very first time. I got the leave ending, partly because I was playing the Enhanced Edition port on pc which included a quick healing option. Either way, I really think that the leave ending was the one I needed now, at this point in my life. I recently had a struggle with suicide that put me in a unique position to actually leave my abusive and miserable situation, and although I'm doing better, uncertainty does have a way of getting the better of me often. The pure exhaustion of living vicariously through James, and yet rising up finally to shed away Pyramid Head and Maria is honestly inspiring to me, and making out of it alive to foster the youth of the future to better lives makes me somewhat happy. That being said, I can't say that I don't see the appeal of the in the water ending, especially because after all of that, it was James' choice, and no one others, to be with Mary forever, not fearing death but celebrating their life together finally, and without shame. I'd like to say thank you to increasing my absolute awe at this game and it's feats in storytelling. There is so much here I feel like I just need to sit with and contemplate. Love you.

I'm only 37min in when writing this but I wanted to say two things before I forget. One is the fact that your brilliant analysis is only possible because this game is so meaningful and so much more than a game (my favorite game of all time, I'm 32 and been playing since I'm 4), it is art, it is masterpiece, and unconsciously, something so deep and meaningful drives out the very best from people, the team working on it, you, me... And that is important to note I think. Second thing has been haunting me since my first playthrough, and watching the video brought back this itch to the surface, and thanks to internet I can at least and at last voice it : I cannot help but believe there has been a switch in the loading screens from this game and Shadow of Memories, both Konami games released not so far apart. Those footsteps are a bit "bland" for SH2, while the loading screen from Shadow of Memories is using a similar pattern as the one that the SH2 main screen logo is displaying, which not really a propos, the footsteps feel way more adapted. This is quite a crazy thought, but SoM has been important to me too, and the thought has been haunting me. What do you think? Ho and... T H A N K Y O U for this video, going to resume it right now.

Most people really don’t ‘get’ Silent Hill. Guillermo del Toro gets it, Hideo Kojima gets it and you obviously get it. Silent Hill was never about Pyramid Head, it’s not explicit slasher horror. It’s all about world building and bringing to light the terrible secrets of ordinary-looking people. The critics who complained about tank controls and fixed camera angles in horror games didn’t know what the fuck they were talking about and now we have a genre that’s overflowing with games about killing monsters and zombies in as many wacky ways as possible in meaningless set pieces that will be forgotten by everyone. Silent Hill was made by a handful of cigarette smoking, canned coffee drinking, David Lynch watching Japanese artsy types in their late 20s and early 30s. They overcame budgetary and technical limitations through mad dedication, hard work, originality and genuine passion for what they were doing. That is not something a big budget design studio under the meddling watch of the current day industry could possibly replicate. It also doesn’t help that Konami, who holds the license to the game, has become a piece of shit company that’s more interested in making pachinko machines than any memorable games. I think the only hope is that the psychological horror genre can be revived with a completely original spiritual successor.

Great video, but I have to disagree with Eddie having Body Dysmorphic Disorder. I think it would be more appropriate for him to have Binge Eating Disorder, if you're going to assign him a disease. Body Dysmorphia is characterized by a person thinking that they look way different than people perceive them. For instance, it was rumored Michael Jackson had this disorder and that's why he had so much plastic surgery and bleaching done. Eddie, more or less, just has a weight problem and such weight problem was continually used against him from his bullies. Otherwise, this is very enjoyable to watch. 10/10.
@texmurph
@texmurph 5 жыл бұрын
I'd take this disagreement a step further and say I don't think he had any kind of eating disorder. The interviews on the SH2 Making of DVD suggest they gave him wide, darting eyes to represent someone in a psychotic state of mind. He also killed a dog, which is a stereotypical action taken by a younger serial killer. To me it seemed pretty clear he just happened to be overweight, and that was what led to him being teased. His main character was being truly mental ill and psychotic - thus why he is the one character the town is able to transform into a killer who tries to kill James. The town feeds his fantasies of murder until he finally becomes fully psychotic by the end. He is vomiting early in the game because he just 'killed' his first person in the town (the corpse nearby you see), and is in denial of his imagined murder the town facilitated. His character's progression is to start from a guilty person in denial of his murderous desires, to later embracing them by the end.

And juuuuust one thing! Michael Jackson never bleached his skin. It was a lot of make up to even out the patches and blotches, and eventually, a kind of cream treatment often prescribed to patients of advanced vitiligo to take off what little darker parts were left at that point. Arguably, I suppose this could be called "bleaching" in a sense. But people do often immediately think of a solely vanity driven and eccentric, Frankenstein-esque procedure done in a lab.

@All_lives_matter, reject fabricated racism by govt What is the full quote regarding the 'secret'? I'm not saying Eddie literally killed anyone, but am just referring to his inner guilt that the town was toying with. Angela doesn't kill her father either, but after she bashes the TV over the door monster's head, she begins dry heaving in a similar fashion, which seems to indicate dry heaving/vomiting is a result of a psychological state the character is in in the game. Of course, that being said, I haven't seen the Ito quote, so would be curious to read more.

The "Leave" ending is the best and I consider it the most appropriate for the history. The fight with the Pyramid Heads would be pointless if at the end, James decided commit suicide even then. Mary forgive him, then James forgive himself and live to fulfill Mary's last wish, adopting and raising Laura. James saw how Eddie and Angela didn't make it, so it will be pointless too if not even James archieve the redemption for his sins. In the Remake for Xbox 360, you unlock an archievement called "I don't need you anymore" when you defeat Pyramid Head, therefore, it is understood that James, finally accept and overcome hia fears.
@PeacefulJoint
@PeacefulJoint 4 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree and say the "In Water" is a better ending. The "Leave" ending fits if the story followed the story from 1+3. But it goes its own route. I feel SH2 is a much more depressing game so a depressing ending fits well in my opinion. Not to mention how water is a very upfront theme. Even the main menu is water.
@spartan4613
@spartan4613 4 жыл бұрын
Lol, I know this comment is a year old but still thought I'd chime in. Killing pyramid head does, in a way, still make sense with "In Water". Him saying he doesn't need them anymore serves to explain that he doesn't need someone else to punish him (even if it's his subconscious) he's ready to do what he feels is the ultimate punishment by his own hand with full intent rather than succumbing to death from another. It's a show of strength in his mind, not a show of futility. Obviously a horrible mindset to be in, but it does make sense
@Wveth
@Wveth 3 жыл бұрын
PH represents, among other things, James' subconscious desire for punishment. Just because he doesn't want to be punished anymore does not mean that he doesn't want to die to be with his love. On the contrary, in a mind as twisted as James', his guilt and desire for punishment might have been holding him back from suicide, because he believed he did not DESERVE to be with Mary in death. After shedding his need to be punished, he is free to die, to be with her.

The stairs collapsing seems to be representing the point of no return for James, no turning back now, he's gone far enough in his understanding to not be able to come to the last realisation he needs to face : Maria, the true Mary in my opinion, or the projection of what he wanted Mary to be, but never was (hence Mary's clothing for Maria, blurring the distinction between the two), is not an angel, and the burden of her death should not be solely carried on his shoulder. He needs to confront this final fact : "Marya" is a manipulative and weak woman that lacked the courage to face herself, and to face the fact that she is currently disgracing her husband, which is, in his love, unable to stand up to her, confused to be hurt so much by the woman he loves. She's hurting him to cover her lack of courage, and hurt herself in the process, because the tragedy is that those two tormented human being truely love each other... They just don't realise something has been lost along the way : themselves. Love can have a tendancy to make weakness seems like a solution, because it can easily feel very wrong to stand up to someone you love. But being weak is not being good, far from it. Man... I am a ranting machine, and today it seems you won the Jackpot! Hey wait ... 🤔 You made a 4h45 video... You are the ranting machine! Haha 👌 Thanks so much for this video, I believe my comments show how seriously I took it. Much respect, you inspired me to do some more analysis myself.

This video is truly quality, and absolutely incredible. Everyone's point of view on SH2 is different, and yours is fresh and well-versed. I especially enjoyed the Aztec history lesson regarding the tablets, and the dive into capital punishment ethics. Your commentary is engaging and very, very thought provoking (as a giant fan of your Morrowind retrospective and discussion). Thank you for making this video and I have no doubt success will come as a result of your diligence and hard work.

Awesome video. I’ve often heard how good SH2 is but never got around to playing it. In part because I have been doing other stuff, but mostly because playing horror games tends to get me really tense for a long time afterwards. Thanks for making this and letting me experience it without having to deal with that. The depth of this story is amazing, and it’s a shame that video games of this era and earlier were never taken seriously. Final Fantasy VII has always been my example to people who think video games are just toys for children. In a lot of ways, games can go much deeper than books and movies because they have the interactive element. It’s a sad irony that now games are finally seen as a serious medium, that they have become hollow, corporate vehicles, used to squeeze every last penny out of the gamers. Anyway, dude. I don’t want to end on a sad note, so keep up the great work 👍

At least there's still devs like FromSoft keeping that.... flame... alive. But yeah pretty heartbreaking when you spend 20+ years committed to the lore of say Mortal Kombat, and now not only are they spitting in the face of that lore, they're charging you an extra $30 per lugie.

I find it interesting how Angela walks up into flame, where in contrast to James, is the complete opposite to how he traverses the town. In most scenarios and especially the Historical society he goes further and further down, and as he goes it gets colder (Atmospherically) and wetter, while Angela rises in flame. James cannot see the flame and so there isn't an imminent danger, but he can feel the warmth. The way Eddie's and Angela's emotions become physical in the town is interestingly different to James, and so I don't see Angela as inherently dying when walking up in the flames. Her sin was a 'crime of passion', and passion usually invokes flames and perhaps to her shes always walking in flames in her own Silent Hill Hell. Since she doesn't die on screen I don't think shes alive or dead, more like Pandora's box where instead of the box shes in the town, but I do agree that James doesn't try further because he cannot help and its up to themselves to come to terms with their own turmoil.

The prisoners are saying "Ritual" there's a cell you can hear them in with all the scribblings and occult books scattered instructing how to revive someone from the dead, the "rebirth" ending. It's a hint. Also "James, the horny idiot" is probably THE BEST subtitle they could've used for the game. SILENT HILL 2: James, The Horny Idiot

While SH4 was to me, the scariest game I ever played. And in terms of atmosphere, it made me feel filthy and unpure playing it. I finally ended the video. You concluded it in a very powerful way, even more respect to you for this. I realised that my previous comment about the death of Maria may be very well over the top, especially in the sense that it extrapolates a lot, and also diminished to an extent Mary's illness. My personal life and love experienced wasn't filtered enough in this comment, having treaded through the streets of Silent Hill myself, not so long ago... Thanks again, it goes without saying that I will indeed watch the SH1 video too, can't wait actually. It is not SH2 by any means, but darn it, I was 12 I think, and a very sensitive boy, still am a sensitive man, and fear is an emotion, and SH blew me away. For the anecdote, the demo of SH actually steered me away from the game, it was that scary for me. A coincidence made it appear on my shelf short after nevertheless. The kid crying in the school restroom? Had to stop the game and go wash my face and rest for like 15 minutes before resuming. I could not handle this game, yet never something touched me so deeply, in awe, fascinated. Be ready for some more comment on the SH1 video... 🙄 I believe comments are good for your channel, KZfaq enjoys interactions I think, so I won't feel too bad about them! 😁

Ahhh, this is beautifully done. This has been very thought-provoking and I really admire your efforts into putting of these theories together. I think you've done this justice. Again, can't stress this enough. I'm so happy that this video exists. After all these years, it's like a catharsis I never knew I needed. There are still questions, but you've answered a lot of them; thank you for that ^^ On another note, I'm not sure if you're going to do this, but since you asked, I thought maybe you can talk about the short indie game "Firewatch" (takes roughly 5 hours to play ) - that game about a guy who ran away from the city ( and obviously responsibilities ) to be a fire lookout in a forest.

Alright, 2 hours in now, and again writing a bit spontaneously, dreading to forget the bit of thinking that occured to me while listening to your "non-analysis" of the elevetor game, to put it very bluntly. Even though the fact that it never stop is a very nice catch, and the fact that it is in part a scheme to force it unto the player without him/her having to doubt the actuality of it, cause as you mention, damaged DVDs or loop bugs were not a myth at all, especially in this era, and even more so with the ever so fragile black CDs of the PSX still haunting the PS2 gamers we had become by then. But I have a really really hard time accepting it doesn't mean anything, too long, too disturbing. So I'll give my spontaneous take on it right now. James is slowly becoming, undergoing change, and the manipulations of Maria I think accelerates this at this point. He is facing the sexual Mary he couldn't accept he desired for so long, therefore revealing his own weakness during their relationship, to either try to confront her with the fact she's not the woman he wants her to be, or be strong and honest enough with himself to realise the relationship is doomed, and that instead of letting her diminish him into a pussy that he is clearly not deep down inside, he should break up, which takes some balls that she managed to cut off from him. Love is a b*tch in this regard, very insidious thing. So here's Maria giving him a sense of purpose, a mission, she portays herself as weak and afraid, and empowers him, and cap it with actual physical contact. His dreamwife is needing him, and offers herself to him in a way, to the pussy he's become and that he's trying to overcome. Ok, now the elevator. What if it actually symbolised a resurgence of the feeling of personal value he's slowly managing to allow to resurface in him? A need to prove to him, but mostly perhaps to the girl standing next to him in the elevator, that he can shine in the spotlight? That he can manage trials under the eyes of all (the host and the public). That he can be the center of interest, after all, that he has more to offer than what he's been showing to Mary? That he's becoming the man he's been shying away from, capable of acting under external pressure, and to face his responsability? I think it makes sense in the way that the show is, like the rest I assume, coming from his mind, and that as the elevator goes down, he's also going down deeper in his atrocious introspection, as you mention. The game becomes a descent as you say, from now on, and Maria may have trigger the spark that kindles this dead flame once more? And she mentions that he's focusing solely on his dead wife, perhaps hinting that she's not the problem, but all the problems are within himself, as I mentionned above : he didn't try to confront Mary, or act the break-up, thus building such an unavowed resentment up to the ultimate denial of himself, he killed the manipulative c*nt instead of facing his own demon, and as the game is clearly showing it, it was way easier for him, cause man.... Journeying into Silent Hill isn't easy, obviously. Alright, tell me what you think about it! Resuming the video now! Man, you rock the boaaaaat!!!!!
