What is Silent Hunter III?
The king of submarine simulations returns with an all-new 3D engine, new crew command features, and more realistic WWII naval action than ever before. The movie-like graphics and simple, tension-filled gameplay make this the perfect game for the realism fanatic and the casual gamer.
Realistic and immersive environment: The suspense-filled atmosphere includes realistic 3D water modeling, day/night cycles, and historically accurate subs, ships, and aircraft. The detailed U-boat interiors, changing weather effects, and engaging audio represent the ultimate in WWII submarine warfare.
Playable U-boats include Type II, VII, IX, and XXI submarines. Take aim against Allied convoys and warships. In recreating the great submarine battles of WWII, players will hide in silence just below threatening escort ships, fire deadly torpedoes, or surface and pound enemies with the deck gun.
Dynamic campaign: Create your own realistic naval war story. Your military career will be influenced by successful command decisions in an unscripted and non-linear WWII campaign.

1944 and forward is definitely risky. I pegged down four strategies of engagement: 1) If you are to hunt convoys, load up on acoustics in case of early detection and basically either try shooting your way into the convoy, engage the tonnage, and then try to slip away going the opposite direction. Preemptive attacks on escorts are usually more wise than foolish. 2) Hunt more lone merchants routes, alternatively small port raids 3) Get the XXI and kick ass. 4) Desert to Argentina.
@Wolfpack345
@Wolfpack345 4 жыл бұрын
1. Yeah this is an idea. This is not realistic though. Homing torpedoes were not produced like TIII torpedoes for example. Also at this point the allies had counters to acoustic torpedos like the Foxer decoy. Preemptive attacks on escorts is still pretty foolish. Especially when there is 8+ escorting one convoy. I will be hunted regardless. 2. This is a good idea. There isn't many of these around at this point however. Port raids are suicidal. 3. That is the plan. 4. The easiest option for sure.
@barbarianmissionary
@barbarianmissionary 4 жыл бұрын
@@Wolfpack345 1. Yes if you go for hard core realism that is probably true, but the homing torpedoes are OP in SH3 GWX. Don't know about the original game. In my experience they rarely failed and act very persistent once locked. I played with everything except stabilizer and no contact updates. But I did txt.cheat to acquire the XXI and thus had a lot of renown for goodies. 2) I did manage some successful port raids on the Azores (when hostile) and St. Johns, eh. To my understanding there are some single merchants still roaming in 1944+, especially tankers coming up from Brazil along the African coast, and generally stuff roaming on the US coast.

Historically, the U-boats began shooting torpedoes at extremely long range - near the maximum range the torpedo could make at slowest speed - and then diving away to escape without waiting to see if the torpedoes hit anything.

"The days of raiding till the torpedo rooms are empty seem to have passed" Well, actually, no. Late war U-boat tactics were to fire a full spread of torpedoes at very long range (about 4-5,000 meters), and then run away immediately without waiting to see if any of them hit. Of course, firing at such ranges meant that 90% of torpedoes missed.

Ive been keeping track of Wolfpack's tonnage and strangely they have been going up (during Patrol 6 & 8) where he sank more tonnage than in Patrol 2, during the Happy Times. He sank 72k tons in Patrol 2, 63k in 3, 65k in 4 but sank 111k in 5, 73k in 6 and 76k in 8. Interesting to note is that Patrol 8 could have been his best patrol if he had used externals, racking up 76k only with his internal storage.

Unfortunately for you the chance of running out of ammo was doubtful due to having 3 or 4 hunters on you, so you done super well. Loving the lore to about the little sub at the start, it was a pleasure to watch this & the last episode, amazing that you were able to leave dock without a repeat of last time. I love your videos. I'm a 53yr old man w/spinal injury from drunk driver but watch all your vids great entertainment! Keep the great work. They need to model the fact that fleet escorts only carried 30 depth charges. Dedicated hunters up to 300 but that was rare. The greatest amount of depth charges dropped on a single U-boat during a single-hunt in the war is believed to be 678 dropped onto U-472 in April, 1945. Amazingly the boat survived. The Hedgehog was the real threat. Even after depth charges changed from TNT to Torpex they still had to get within 40 meters to real damage to the hull. Keep up the great work 👍. Can't wait for next video.
@Wolfpack345
@Wolfpack345 4 жыл бұрын
Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! GWX accurately models the number of depth charges carried on the Destroyer Escorts. The Buckley for example carries around 200 depth charges. These dedicated Destroyer Escorts were not rare in the Atlantic. I could not find a source stating Allied Escorts only carried 30 Depth charges. I believe even Fletchers carried more than that but my brief search did not come up with concrete numbers. When Googling "How many depth charges did the ww2 destroyer have" I discovered this "typical load out on a fleet destroyer was about 30 depth charges" This was the first thing that came up in this search. That article is referring to Japanese Fleet Destroyers in the Pacific. Not Allied Destroyers.

@@Wolfpack345 Ahh that's exactly what I typed in...good catch I didn't see that it was for Japanese destroyers. I realize that I'm 3 years late but for future campaigns: When depth charges go off they create bubbles, and a lot of 'em (yay bubbles). But something many people don't know is that they create kind of a barrier against those pesky active sonars. You may still hear the pinging, but they sure as shit cant hear where you are with that big wall of bubbles between them and you. These can last for 3-15 minutes some reports say. Furthermore, the sound waves from the underwater explosion also reflect off the seabed and make active sonar useless for a little while, of course shallower water makes the 'echo' to greater effect. I highly doubt they have modelled that in the game but technically after some depth charges go off you should have at least a 3 minute window where you can go flank ahead and change course to slip away unnoticed.

I guess trying to overtake a convoy on the surface is no longer possible, the radar detection range is just too large. I guess you would have to either try to position well ahead of them without making contact and just wait underwater. If they got away welp wait for the next one.

Wow! That was an awesome display of American firepower! What they lack in aim, they make up for with ammunition! Are you SURE you want to take this big, slow diving, slow maneuvering boat into the shallow waters of the English Channel? I'd rethink that plan if I were you...

Wow, another raid just as you leave port? I dare say that they've got a spy in the base, and they're trying to take you out, since they seem to be arriving right around when you're scheduled to leave port every time! As a side note, are you issued anti-aircraft ammunition for your deck gun? That could help you increase your AA firepower, as well as range. Also, congrats on surviving that nail-biting experience with those destroyers!

@@Wolfpack345 I was actually referring to your 105mm deck gun, as I know that on surface vessels at least later variants of it could serve a dual-purpose role as both an anti-surface weapon and as a heavy anti-aircraft battery. I think in SH4 there was an AA round option for the US deck guns, although I've never seen anyone use them in game.
