I think the Biscay Cross (Metox) was most useful at night and in poor weather conditions. During bright sunlight, not so much. The problem with the Biscay Cross was that it was fragile and kept getting broken. During crash dives, the bridge lookouts would pick it up and toss it down the hatch, where someone might catch it (but not usually) - and then all the lookouts would hurl themselves down the hatch, and their big seaboots would land on top of the wooden cross, breaking it. Then the cross would be hastily patched up by the ship's carpenter before the next surfacing. By the end of the patrol, the wooden cross would be more crooked than a drunken swastika, and likely flopping about like a puppet on strings - if it was even in any fit state to be used at all!

Yeah I found this interesting while reading Iron Coffins. He discusses the same issues with Metox. I do think you are correct it is more useful during the night time. Also the hurricanes that I picked up probably didn't have radar like another comment said.

This was the favorite Silent Hunter in terms of game mechanics and crew management. I remember buying this on the release day along with an LCD projector and setting up a wall sized display. Turning lights off, making some tea and playing Silent Hunter 3 as if it was for real. No timelapse. If it takes an hour to get somewhere, I'd plot course and wait an hour, enjoying the view.

The problem with the Metox was that it detected meter wavelength radar waves. By 1942 most of the allied planes and ships had centimetre wavelength radar, which it did not detect. I don't know if it is modelled in game, but it should be of limited use, more so as the war went on.

I am pretty sure it is modeled in game. Eventually you get assess to Naxos which was able to detect Centimetric ASV radar.

@@Wolfpack345 It's modeled pretty well. Initially it did a good job, but then, quite suddenly we started getting attacked at night without any warning whatsoever. As soon as you can, upgrade to Naxos; you might also want to increase your AA suite and keep it manned when transferring reserve torpedoes. Your point on Enigma is well taken. The British 'leaked' information that they were able to home in on signal leakage from heterodyne units such as the standard German wireless and of course, Metox, in order to cover their code breaking successes. The Germans knew it was possible as they had discovered that stray leakage from various radios, even when just on but not sending, and Metox, could be detected at short ranges and developed a means of doing so. The British though knowing it was possible in theory had not developed a detection method, but the Germans fell for the miss-information which appeared in British newspapers.

@@astridingmarsdottir2400 man UK intelligence was YEARS ahead of Germans... they dig everything The RWR problem it is very well modeled, not so the Enigma Problem... U-Boats had a seccondary job as advanced weather stations, they had to transmit weather conditions to BDU every 4 hours, and since no underwater radio antenna was developed during WW2, they only could do it while in surface. So despite having a better RWR, they sill were detected by code break and they also were chased from the air due to massive allied air superiority Another problems were encountered: Snorkel, while way better than anything, Snorkel was weather limited, also, later war radars could detect it (both problems are well modeled in the game) The other problem, not really able to be modeled, was that Type VII u-boats couldn't be upgraded to some form of "underwater boat" like the Type Balaos, Trench and some Gatos subs with Guppy proyect, since they weren't that big and couldn't carry enough batteries for a more powerfull electric motor in order to provide fully submerged operation capability. They had to stick with high performance diesels along with smaller electric motors config. I do not know about type IX, but i'm pretty shure type VII's couldn't. - So, instead of an incremental upgrade on the Type VII, they had to develop an entire new submarine class from scratch, which taked a lot longer... that's the main reason why Type XXI didn't really make it to the battleground (well, that and slave labor which had some quality issues). That's why from may 1943 up to the end of the war, the u-boots couldn't really do much. They nevertheless kept sailing in order to distract and divert Allied forces in order to gain time for the rest of Germany and for themselves to came up with a solution

On my current patrol in the Carribean I travelled all the way to U-463 and re-armed only to find that all 22 torpedo's it had given me were G2's.... clearly must have been the stock left over from returning U-Boats.

I used to edit the crash dive (I think I used 40m) for any model of sub I was using as it allowed me to crash dive in somewhat shallower waters. It also allowed me to avoid a bug that happened sometimes if you interrupted a crash dive before it 'finished', which is to say levelled at the default depth and blown negative to normal trim (you'd see your compressed air reserve dip). If you encountered that bug you'd end up with constant depth trim issues unless you could exit the session. Perhaps they fixed it, as it's many years since I've played. As to message interception, the main problem for the u-boats wasn't especially the breaking of Enigma (the subs used a 4 rotor one, more difficult to break), and indeed there were still significant periods where the Allies hadn't broken the U-boat code in a way as to deliver timely and thus useable intelligence. It was more the fitting of HFDF (high frequency direction finder antennae, commonly called "huff-duff" that gave many more opportunities to triangulate detected signals. This proved very useful for general threat direction awareness, but also became tactically relevant if a sub was trailing a convoy and giving position reports. There's mention of it in "U-333: The Story of a U-Boat Ace" by Peter 'Ali' Cremer when he tells how photos were taken in Portugal (I think) and sent back to Germany. They decided the pictures weer too large, so they trimmed them. In doing so, they cut off the distinctive HFDF antenna array as, not being naval officers, they didn't recognise its significance. I seem to remember he said they had no knowledge of it until after the war and thus completely missed that it was the act of sending the message, NOT it being intercepted and broken, that was the most common and significant problem.

Happy New Year and thanks for keeping the game alive! Mag detonations are far more damaging to a target however it takes more time for them to slip under the waves. A mag hit directly under the turret of a capital warship will all but ensure a one shot-one kill (Magazine Hit). A mag hit directly under the smokestack of any target (boiler room) will almost assure at least a "dead in the water" result. Many seasoned captains (including this one) believe that firing magnetic set torps in salvo runs the risk of the turbulence triggering the trail torp. As proof, it always seems to be the trail fish that explodes and never the lead. Try firing them individually and wait a three to five sec spacing. I, personally, wait for the "Torp in the water" conformation before sending the next fish downrange and I've haven't had a pre-det since. i know it doesn't make for exciting vid, but I would like to see a non-battle computer engagement if possible. another seasoned captain here... i do have to say that i do use (Vanilla game 1.4 + GWX3 Gold) impact pistol about 90% of the time... due to several advantages: 1) it is historically accurated: since most of the u-boot captains never really trusted the mag fuse due to early war problems. By 1941 impact fuse was pretty reliable, while mag fuse became reliable only with G7e III torps (that means late 1942). 2) it can kill by flooding with no problem: 1 torp for every 5000tn or less ship, 2 for larger ships (including liberty ships), Tankers will go down with just one, they most of the times are pretty weak targets. Passenger/Cargo (2500tn) Medium Merchant (4500tn) and Grandville Type Merchant (4000tn) are a little bit tricky, since they need to take the hit in the 1st half of the ship. If they are hitted near the stern, they will mostly survive damage. 3) Reliable impact and damage: The point 2 determs RoE, and you'll know they work pretty reliable, not only fuse wise, but also what damage to expect from a given ship and a given hit. Shure, Magnetic fuse might cause a devastating blow, but they won't do it as reliable (at least with GWX 3.0) and at the end of the day you'll end up using more torps in order to ensure propper damage to be delivered. 4) Great warship killers: i've managed to sink HMS Nelson (in 1940 will replace HMS Warspite in Narvik battle during operation weserübung) in several campaigns in some of those i only managed to score 1 single impact fused torp at 5meter depth just a little to the bow of Turret 1, and it went to the bottom. I also managed to sink an Illustrious carrier with just one lucky impact fuse shot at 8km (which was pretty awesome considering it was a surface 2 torp shot with manual imput and torpedo hit at around 11km away from launch position). Nevertheless nobody on his right mind will shoot just one torp to a capital ship... u-boat commanders realistically shooted a full 4 torpedo salvo on any warship larger than a light cruiser and that's exactly what i do to be honest There's a place for magnetic fuse nevertheless: 1) to weird angled targets: if there's no time for reposition. If you are attacking a convoy inside convoy's lines, and you have the chance of a late minute stern tube shot to a merchant, then maybe the magnetic fuse will guarantee a detonation even if torpedo strikes at a really weird angle since it will detonate under the target no matter what angle did it hit. 2) to half baked ships: even if they are engine-dead, the list of a ship might produce a bounce for an impact fuse, so the best way to go is to come really close (750mtrs) and shoot a mid depth mag fused torp. 3) in extremely calm seas: if by example using the single stern tube or have only one last tube loaded and seas are really calmed, trying a magnetic fuse attack to a large ship might be a good idea, it is reasonable to risk if you already know that a single impact fuse torp won't do the job and you can reliably use the magnetic fuse. This is specially true in late war when Deck gun will be useless due to allied air coverage, and magnetic pistol will be way more reliable

When the seas are choppy try to set the depth for 14 meters, instead of just setting periscope depth. That should keep your conning tower from breaching, and the periscope would sitll go above 14 meters! Also that would be great if you encounter a convoy and track it while sending messages to BDU, and maybe the others U-Boats would come and you would form a Wolfpack with them! That would be so cool I think!

Hey I have been a huge fan of your videos. Love the cinematic element that you incorporate into them. This may be a stretch asking for this, but could you possibly do an install video on how you got all of your mods into your game? I have been able to figure mostly all of it out by myself (after trial and error lol) but I am sure there would be more people who would benefit seeing an installation guide to get their game modded exactly like yours. Just a suggestion! Love this current series and Good Hunting.

In reference to the premature in your first attack--I have noticed that when firing a pair of torpedoes in salvo and when set to magnetic--almost always one will premature. I think it might be a bug in the game. Consequently when firing magnetic, I fire the two torpedoes singly. That seems to be an adequate work around--two singles in rapid succession as opposed to a salvo.

The torpedoes themselves are made of metal and have a magnetic field. It's not beyond reasonable for one torpedo to be detecting the other at a close following distance. So manually fired salvoes probably will be more reliable.

Well, kinda. They broke the original pre-war machine which had only three rotors (whose positions could be swapped) and no Steckerbrett. That provided a crucial foundation for breaking the wartime naval machines, which had more rotors and a Steckerbrett, but the greater resources of Bletchley Park and the huge British radio-interception effort were needed to finish the job. Obtaining a few captured machines and codebooks also helped a great deal.

If you're interested I thought I might mention that the more nearly exact time for the 3 min 15 second rule for computing target speeds is 3 min 14.38 second, or rounded down 3 min 14 sec.

The best explanation for why you didn't detect the HUrricanes on your Radar detector and also why they didn't detect you is that Hurricanes don't carry radar. It was pretty much only on larger planes, at least initially, i.e. mid-1942.

Correct. The first single-engined aircraft with ASV radar was the Fairey Swordfish Mk.III biplane, which entered service in late 1943. The radome was between the (fixed) landing gear, so the Swordfish III carried 8 underwing rockets for armament. It also had a flare gun to light up its target. Beware of (previously mostly harmless) Swordfish biplanes from mid-1943 onwards! In mid-1944, the slow old Swordfish was supplemented by the faster Fairey Barracuda Mk.III monoplane, with the same ASV Mk.XI radar.

You've chosen the hell of a boat, not only she holds the record for the 2nd most successful patrol of the war. She was alo part of the so called deck gun incident. On 16th May 1941 U-105 needed 3 torpedoes and 90 rounds HE and also 22 incendiary rounds to sink the freighter Rodney Star. uboat.net/allies/merchants/ship/925.html The last round exploded in the barrel wounding 6 men. abload.de/img/--thepicturewastakenocmkgl.jpg

Ok, i know this was done long ago but Hurricanes could only manage smaller bombs and not depth charges. Those were dropped by lots of larger planes, starting with hudsons.

8:30 do you have a source for for Allies not being able to track Metox? every book i've read states that they did in fact find a way of tracking Submarines using Metox and it wasn't until they upgraded to Naxos that the issue stopped (that is at least from a couple of German sources I've read that mention the Biscay Cross). Edit: the section on uboat.net on Metox sort-of answered this for me: "Metox also emitted a weak signal, a property common to many radio receivers, especially superheterodyne receivers. In an indirect way, this had serious consequences. In the spring of 1943, the U-boats suffered badly because of the introduction by the British of a 10cm ASV radar. But a captured British officer told the Germans that their misfortunes were caused by the transmission of Metox, which were detected by Coastal Command aircraft. After verifying that this was technically possible, the Germans believed the story. This delayed the introduction of Naxos by some months, during which the U-boats suffered heavy losses."

Right, there were a number of reasons why U-boat losses to air attack went up: 1: Enigma decryption was intermittently a good source of intelligence, so convoys could be vectored away from planned hunting zones in advance, and hunters sent in. 2: HF/DF regularly succeeded in locating U-boats when they reported to BdU, even just a brief acknowledgement of some message from the latter. See above for the response. 3: Centimetric radar was mounted on aircraft, which the Metox detector couldn't detect, but was actually better at finding submarines than the older metre-band radars. 4: Dedicated ASW aircraft patrols were introduced, such as the famous "Tsetse" variant of the Mosquito, which could detect a surfaced U-boat at night from a distance through the clouds using centimetric radar, then *turn off the engines* and glide to an attacking position, upon which they would turn on a searchlight and fire what amounted to an anti-tank gun at the newly highlighted target. This was extremely lethal and effective, and gave the target no chance to respond. 5: Disinformation campaigns led the Germans to believe that Metox was still the correct tool, but flawed. In fact the emissions were present but too weak to use. Other radar-related disinformation was the myth (still widely quoted today) that carrots are good for night vision.

@@herrakaarme Not that I'm aware of. With two engines, being able to start even one would be enough to get home, and a windmill start is generally easier than starting on the ground.

How do you have deleted wet camera when you surface? I see better fov for cameras.dat .. what do you use for complements to arb widegui?

Damage model was always a bit wonky. On the one hand, deck guns in the stock game worked as though they were 11" instead of the 88mm/105mm in reality. On the other, no way does a merchant steamer survive a proper torpedo explosion in what would effectively be its boiler/engine spaces. You really ought not have needed to fire a second torp to kill it.

What mod allows you to slave the torpedo settings to the attack scope in the scope UI? WideGUI is nice but it only allows activating it to the TDC, not the attack scope

I am currently playing SH4 with operation Monsun and OMEGU. (Using the KiUB stuff.)... What would I gain from playing SH3? I dont know what wich one I should play.... sh3, sh4, sh5.....

Does the soundpack use voice lines from Das Boot? Some of the alarm calls and following effects sound very familiar to scenes from that film, particularly the emergency dive practice scene.

To be honest Sh3 and Sh4 play very similarly. Sh5 is still a mess imo even with mods.

I can't see why the Kriegsmarine would recommend turning off the Metox, since, as I surmise, it's a passive detection device.

It is no longer supported by Ubisoft. It's not too difficult to get running though. Just have to run in windows compadability mode.

What I find weird about that is if he was arrested for a simple charge such as public drunkenness...this is wartime! Wouldn't he be allowed to be released to the ship for the upcoming patrol?
