On the american destroyer: After the last depth charges exploded, the hydrophone operator listened again for the submarine. After a few moments, he heard an explosion deep down. Turning towards his fellow shipmates he spoke: "we got them". The room burst out in cheers and claps but was soon interrupted by the captain: "Alright men, settle down! We just sent young men to an early grave deep down to the cold ocean floor." The room mood quickly died, then the captain spoke again: "Alright, time to rejoin our convoy. Radioman, inform the covoy that there is no threat to their safety and then send a report back to HQ." And so the radioman begun doing that as the destroyer made its way back to the convoy... Back at BdU: As Dönitz was walking around the war room, a member of the staff asked for his attention: "Herr Admiral, U-531 failed to repport its status after 2 requests,sir." It took Dönitz only a few seconds to to remember whose boat it was, after which his expression changed to a mixture of concern and shock. "Send the request one more time, please" he said. The staff member nodded and began to repeat the request. And so minutes passed, half an hour passed, an hour and then 2 hours passed. Dönitz then returned to the staff member and asked: "any response?" The staff member turned towards Dönitz and replied:"Nein, Herr Admiral". It was then that Dönitz knew, there was no denying it anymore, another ace was lost. He put his hands on the table, holding his body as he gave a deep sad sigh. A moment later, he told the staff member:"Send out a message: 'U-531 has failed to report after repeated requests. Presumed sunk'." The staff member nodded and began to send the message. After approaching the naval map of the Atlantic theatre, Dönitz took a pen and then crossed off U-531 and then took it off the map. The other officers noticed this and instantly knew what happened.Shock took over most of them. Sitting down to his table, Dönitz took out a clipboard and put it on his table. On it stood the names of all U-boat aces, their tonnage sunk and their status. With a heavy heart, Dönitz wrote next to another name: "killed in action"... (Just finished watching this playlist. I liked it very much :) I hope you enjoyed my little epilogue on this long journey of a U-boat captain that almost survived to tell the tale, but alas, just like many others, perrished into the ocean depths. Great job dude this was very entertaining and you dang near made it all the way to the end of the war easily doubled the runner up boat and captain in tonnage sunk. Before the depth charge pattern that got you I was quietly hopeful you were going to escape again! But I don't know what your battery state was..had to be getting low. And I don't blame you for pushing it too much, you basically had to or just give up, it had gotten so difficult to intercept anything. All in all, I wish you could have made it to the end of the war before it ended, but it would have required you to just stop attacking period. Good job, loved it. I follow all of your videos and series and my personal favorite are the U-Boat series.👍

When his uboat was sunk, the first think that came out in my mind where the real uboats sailors, RIP to my Great Grand father Sailor in U-589 sunk in the arctic by a british ship in september 1942 he didn't even make it to 43 :( and im kind of sad that Wolfpack's uboat journey end here:(

My grandfather served on a Royal Navy destroyer hunting subs. I'm proud of him of course, but to think about what everyone on both sides went through... It's chilling. War's hell.

All of my grandfathers brothers served on U-boats. None of them survived, he is the only of 7 to survive the war.

My great uncle was on a destroyer in the Pacific. It was sunk by the Japanese and he did not survive... terrible war.

My grandmother's brother served on a u-boat in the german navy and didnt come back. She saw me playing SH3 once when it was new and got really angry, she also hated red october. Makes sense

And it was exactly like that on British and American submarines whenever they were hunted by Axis destroyers.....except that Japanese destroyer crews were rather incompetent in setting their depth charge explosion depth correctly in the beginning of Pasific War....

Carriers... lol. Serving on the German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin would have been a plum job in the Kreigsmarine - it never went to sea! 😉 (A 40-man skeleton crew served on the ship until April 1945, when she was scuttled.)

Man that ending was so fitting, like everybody I had hoped you would make it to 1945 and see the end of the war but like for so many U-boat crews in ww2 it wasn’t to be, and the last thing you see is the power cut and hear the water rush in and that’s it, really brought everything home that whole this is a fun Awsome game it is based on a conflict that consumed so many lives, Rip to all those lost on both sides.

OMG! That sudden dramatic end caught me completely by surprise! You’ve been so good at evading their attacks, I was starting to believe you were invulnerable. The desperate shouts and screams of the dying crew had me teary eyed. Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into this series. @@timonsolus Pretty sure it was a hedgehog, the ASDIC just stopped pinging indicating the destroyer was directly over the boat. There wasn't enough time for a depth charge to reach him.

I was really hoping you would be putting them in coffins but i guess your luck had to run out somewhere. Edit: I think a short series in the XXI would be really fun and a lot of ppl would enjoy seeing peak german sub tech vs the incredible asw of the allies. Plus it will give ya time to figure out what the next big campaign would be, either way, ill be here watching and cheering (very quietly of course cus sneaky sub) ya on.

@@Wolfpack345 sure got that right! I looked forward every week to a new well made episode. Set time aside to watch it uninterrupted. The (well done👍🏻👍🏻) ending of this episode / series reminded me of the last episode of the BBC series 'Blackadder', the WWI episode ("Over the top") where the main characters finally go 'over-the-top', i.e. climb out of their trenches and run toward the enemy. Despite that series being a comedy; it sent a heart-chilling / stopping message of what reality actually looked like. Your ending here is on par with that! Very impressive how you subtly, and with dignity brought home the real life terror that war always brings with it.

Wow. This series man. Idk. I am gonna miss knowing that every friday morning, another chapter of the u-531 and her crew would be ready for me to watch and enjoy. I remember the first episode i watched too, patrol five episode four when you sank the HMT Aquitania, not sure why youtube recomended me that video, but im sure glad it did. It introduced me to your channel, and the silent hunter series, which im grateful for. This episode is a bit sad, but knowing you, im sure you'll devise a new series, just as interesting and fun to watch. Like how you mentioned in an early episode, about starting a new career, late-war, in a type XXI u-boat. Whatever new stuff you choose to make however, i can assure you i'll watch it, and enjoy it. Thank you. Lest we forget.

@@FrikInCasualMode Okay, I have few thoughts on your words. 1. Yeah U.S.F. isn't good and all, but the Americans did with the Japanese, too. Fun fact, Admiral Donitz was excused of such but was saved from execution because the Americans were also guilty of such. 2. The Kriegsmarine was the least Nazified? Criminalized? well anyway for the most part the members weren't "evil", morally anyway. 3. We sink Tankers, we sink Cargo vessels, we sink Troop Transports, but we're not sinking Hospital ships. That's where I draw the line. (Not sure what meaning of this is, but Wolfpack followed it). 4. That "moment" was the fate of many submarines of many nations during the conflict, and is a horrible way to go down. 5. For the most part those people have a human part of them to some degree. Extra: Please don't hate me.

@@adamtruong1759 I am from Poland. We have no love lost for Nazis whatsoever. Did you watch "Das Boot"? Scenes with escorts hammering the submarine with depth charges were dramatic and gripping - and i smiled from ear to ear watching them. I'm not going to be merciful or politically correct towards genocidal murderers and war criminals. And as for Americans doing the same - read about war crimes committed by Japanese sailors early in the war - during invasion of Philippines for example. Eye for an eye.

A bittersweet ending... no doubt BdU and German High Command will be kicking themselves (in the nuts) quite hard for the oversight of not giving their top Ace a Type XXI before his luck ran out. I can only hope the end was fast for your crew, horrible way to go, trapped so deep beneath the surface. Absolutely fantastic series and I'm so glad to have been along with you for the majority of it. Here's to another, and a drink to your successes.

A fitting end to an excellent series. Despite the tension building up over the course of the entire episode, and the spoiler episode title, the sudden darkness & the screams still stunned me for a few seconds. You made the right choice in not speaking again after that.

My uncle was torpedoed twice in the North Atlantic. On shore, he was a stage magician and a dance band leader. He was also from a tough breed of people. My father worked on the Light Ship that was on permanent station at the mouth of Belfast Harbour. They were machine-gunned by German Bombers.

For more than 60 episodes, I followed this campaign. It's been such a ride, from deck-gunning the merchants in '41, to tropical fun in the south and large cargo victories in '42 and '43 and finally, turning into prey more and more as the months roll by through '44. Long gone were the days of single or double escort convoys. The ending really turned my stomach over. Great gameplay, editing and videos. I agree about the Type XXI mini-campaign ;)

The ending was amazing. Such a shame that the series couldn't last longer, but damn, that ending was incredible. I loved the way you recorded it... the suddenness of the final moments. Some bloody amazing cinematography there!

Have you every watched "Das Boot" (Director's Cut, German with english subtitles)? You should watch it, it's the best submarine movie of all time and one of the best anti-war movies.

Unbelievable. The personality of your videos is really impressive. The intros are captivating, the little snippets of history are informative, and the gameplay is exciting. Watching you is like watching a movie at some points and I was really struck by the end. A harsh destiny out there, a second away from death. You know it can happen, you've experienced it so many times, and you're still shocked when the screen goes black. I think you did a great job of depicting the hopelessness of the battle for the Atlantic and the complexity of the feelings of the men on these beautiful boats. You're happy about every hit, you know that you're sending people to their deaths, and yet you throw your life into the balance between death on the Ships or death at the hands of a nameless destroyer. Really good. And in the end your base, your home will be moved because the enemy is already there. And last but not least, it doesn't matter, your successes or failures because fate is already written. It's almost mystical. I rarely had something like that on You Tube and I'll throw myself straight into Career XXI. Thanks for the effort and the great, pointless, sad time.

I already knew the outcome from the title - had fun while it lasted. Amazing playthrough, many thanks for providing this for over a year. It's on his agenda but I think Kaluen Wolfpack will be taking an overdue break from the action in the Atlantic (a Monsun boat series would start with departure from France I think). I'm pretty sure he wanted to do another SHIV series first. I guess we'll see.

Finally got to watch this. WOW. that is some heavy depth charging there, and some seriously deep operations. To put things in perspective, 200m is over 650 feet down. At that depth, sea pressure is 260PSIG or 17.7 atmospheres. I've been deeper, but not often. And the end... that was one heck of an end. I appreciate the summary you had afterwards, too. The German submarine force suffered the highest casualty rate of any branch of the armed forces for any nation in WWII.

Watched this series from beginning to end over about two weeks; and what an incredible journey it was! A series like this is honestly one of the best ways to understand just how bad of a position submariners were in during WWII, along with Das Boot. Really looking forward to the continuation of your Type XXI series!

Daym i loved this episode its my 3rd episode that i watched. I remember when i played silent hunter iv when i was attacking convoy and just launched torpedos and looked to my left seeing destroyer gunning at my I felt so much thrill and relieved when you saw that destroyer. I also loved your ending just silance and black screen

This was a truly glorious series! I used to love the game but alas these days I just don’t have time. It was such a pleasure watching these episodes. Was literally on the edge of my seat. So sad to see it end but there’s an air of authenticity. You played the long game and the inevitable finally struck. Don’t be afraid of starting from scratch (1939). You’ll have at least ONE avid viewer. Great content. Great channel. Well done!

Damn man what a great ending to this series. I was worried it'd be from a plane but this was a good way to go. Really enjoyed how it became nearly impossible for you to do anything near the end. You couldn't even get within torp range before they spotted you.

Time ran out for this U-Boat, it was a long and fun play through to watch and I salute you for managing to stay alive this long if you think about it you were alive longer than many U-Boat commanders and crews.

I know it is from the other side of the whole thing but I am going to listen to the brilliant Cruel Sea radio play that is on you tube now. Feels appropriate. This series has been brilliant. I've not played Sh3 that much (always more Sh4) but the brutality of the battle of the atlantic and the way you portrayed it has been brilliant.

Wow, that ending kind of gives a glimpse of just how horrifying it must've been to serve in a U-Boat during WW2. Especially knowing that sometimes crewmembers had time to realize their fate and not be able to do anything about it.

I just finished the series. It was such a great one, gut wrenching ending with all these warships coming in, hedghehog munitions finally showed up for the first time and that was also the last. Those warships and task forces were really increasing the pressure (no pun intended) the more the series went and same with aircrafts. What a build up. Rip Herr Kaleun and the U-531 crew :(

My Grandfather’s Brother was lost at sea serving on the USS Bullhead a Balao class Submarine during the Second World War his submarine was depth charged by a Japanese aircraft in the java sea he was Torpedo man 2nd class on board.
