Great Work, the HMT Aquitania actually survived the war in real life. Around this time the Aquitania was getting ready to transport Australian troops from North Africa back to Australia to fight against the Japanese, you likely caught her during her trip back to North Africa to begin this process. This likely means she didn't have any troops on board, but she is still a grand prize for your roster Captain a grand prize indeed.

Fun fact: at 44,000 tons this would've been the largest ship sunk by U Boats in WW2, and second only to the Britannic overall. Of course it never happened but still, what a catch!

The Aquitaine served as a hospital ship and a troop ship in ww1 and during the 20s-30s she was the most popular passenger ship owned by the company Cunard Line,and she was the last 4 stacker to be scrapped as she was built in 1913 and scrapped in 1950

You demonstrated amply the failure of the BdU and Admiral Doenitz to understand that the Engima codes had been broken. A simple request to identify your position was a virtual death sentence for any U-Boat

To a degree, true. If BdU is requesting your position because your last message was "I've been hit by a bomb, sink-"... I'm fairly sure the allies know your position already.

Very few U-boat commanders had the guts to disobey a direct order to send weather and status reports to BdU. The weather reports were necessary since the Luftwaffe had very few long range Focke-Wulf Condor patrol planes left by 1943. The constant status reports were unnecessary though. What BdU should have done IMO is convert some war-weary old U-boats into dedicated weather reporting boats. Cut down the conning tower to a minimum size (Type IIA size tower), remove all the torpedo tubes and guns, reduce the crew accordingly to control room and engine personnel only, and use the space freed up to install extra batteries, fuel, oxygen bottles and supplies. Then these unarmed boats can stay on patrol for several months at a time, report weather conditions regularly, and if attacked they can use their extra battery power, streamlined profile and extra submerged speed to escape. It no longer matters if they give away their positions with radio calls, since they aren't 'attack' boats anyway - and they will actually divert Allied ASW efforts away from the 'attack boats'.

Even worse, the HF DF was locating the transmitting ships without even decoding their messages. That was a real death sentence. ENIGMA was more useful on revealing a long message with more information and details

When the U-Boats were inbound or heading out in 43', they would hug the 'neutral' Spanish coast to hopefully deter attacks.

Well even though I just found you this evening, you have given me something to do while stuck indoors. I’m helping my 85 year old mother during the virus scare. I came to her house a couple of weeks ago because her dog had gotten sick enough to have surgery, she was a basket case worried that she was going to loose him. Well all in all he came through it pretty good. If I had known I was going to be here this long I would’ve brought my PS4 to keep me from going nuts during the virus scare. But, you have given me some entertainment, and since your vids last mostly half an hour it does make the time fly by... thanks keep it up please.

Yep, in real life the last of the four funnel ships to survive, up to 1950. She saw transport and hospital service in both World Wars, without incident unlike her sister the Lusitania. But then the Germans didn't have Wolfpack in real life.

So while playing SH3 with GWX3.0 I decided to look up wikipedia articles for the U-boats BdU presume sunk. The modders (or devs) have really been doing a good job because the dates in the game where the U-boats were lost corresponds perfectly with what I read on wiki. Often even down to the cause of their sinking. Mines, scuttling, aircraft. It's really interesting from a historical perspective and lends much in the way of immersion.

Thanks for the great video and keeping the sim alive. -Targets like that are why you never waste torpedoes on lone destroyers. -One of the bonuses for magnetic detonations are that they don't give away the direction from where they were fired from. -Too bad we don't see Jack and Rose floating around on a door after she slipped under. Wow! Amazing, 3 years since I first watched this favorite wolfpack episode, and I'm just NOW realizing that mag torp benefit.......I feel (and I'm your thinking it) like I'm quite the noob! Thanks anyways for the tip! At the minimum, it speeds up TDC calculations. Mag torp conceals direction of travel and then possibly my position? The bubble trails from certain mag equiped torps can still give your position away.

This was a fun and thrilling wolfpack episode! Your encounter with troopship HMT Aquitania reminded me why, 15+ years later, I still like playing SH3! The attention to little details is a special hallmark for SH3. So I was very surprised given Aquitania was hit hard, yet she didn't immediately blow up or capsize and sink fast. Rather, she seemed to have had more than enough time to limp away sinking to drop at least one life boat?

Had a destroyer come out of the night fog and before we knew it we had taken a shell in the conning tower. Dived, was depth charged but managed to get away. Still scared the ever living shit out of me though!

He has a video I'm thinking it's 1945 and he is in a type 21 boat. Or XXI, sorry... But he encountered a hunter/killer group specialized in anti-submarine operations, with an escort carrier... well he decided to come up from hiding, quickly fires off 3 or 4, sunk the carrier, and then escaped. But yeah, that's a close second without asking him.👍

I sank Aquitania last night. She was part of a large convoy headed for the UK. I fired 4 eels at 2800m set to impact at 5m depth and got 4 hits. She went down in a couple of minutes but I didn't even see it as I shot another two ships with my next salvo. The escorts went nuts but never found me. The only kill I've made that came close to the same tonnage was HMS Hood. Oak leaves to my Knights Cross. You are extremely cautious and that's ok, but the noise of a big ship sinking makes it hard for escorts to get you pinged. Keep your scope down and reload. If an escort does pick you up, just run at full speed to get him on your stern and give him a shot in the face with an eel set to magnetic at 3m depth. They don't zigzag if you make a lot of noise. I kill a lot of escorts that way. Still, nice video.

Lusitania was carrying 300 tons of cordite in the bow, near where the single torpedo hit. The British tried to hide that fact but survivors reported two explosions, one much larger than the first.

@@RagefpsYes, it was confirmed after drones found shell casings inside the Lusitania's bow. The British gleefully used Americans as human shields.

@@notapuma Well that might explain things. Coal dust ignites the cordite or vice versa. Either way that would have seriously damaged the bulkheads and WT integrity. Still yet to have a decent explanation on how a compartmentalized ship can sink so damn fast with only a couple of compartments breached.

@@Ragefps Well most ships are rated for no more than 4 bulkhead compartment breaches. 300 tons of cordite can easily rip through a few, all it would take is a couple bulkheads to fail or be jammed and suddenly your ship is sinking very quickly.

Oh that was brilliant wolfpack, i loved the intro about the waves & yes i have to agree after watching Das boat, one minute your in a bunk bed the next your on the floor, lol, can't have been fun on the surface in bad weather, Great salvo to, the war ship might not have committed to you due to having to pick up survivors from the troop carrier although as they pointed out in Das Boat that was not always the case. I am ordering a new copy of SH3 today as i am really bloody missing it. I cant join in on the live streams as i live in the uk & work nights so looking forward to your next edition of SH3, keep up the great work & happy hunting

Alright! I received my "Silent Hunter" user manual (used on eBay). In excellent condition too! Hopefully it crosses multiple games (SH-3), and even if its 80% correct, that's better than 0%.

You won't be disappointed if you like submarines in general and the games, try the Web page subsim it has everything on there for all of the submarine games to date, well nearly all, not sure if they cover really old games for computers like the commodore

My God! What the hell was the Aquitania doing crawling along at only 7 knots? Even in her elderly, dilapidated condition, she should be cruising at twice that speed, minimum! She must have had engine trouble, it's the only possible explanation. She was a sitting duck at only 7 knots. Not to mention no zigzagging and only 1 escort! The Aquitania would have been coming back to the UK after being on troop transport duties in the Far East, taking Australian troops home from North Africa to fight the Japanese (Operation Pamphlet). Most likely, she would not have had any troops on board - so this isn't another Lancastria disaster for the British. Still extremely embarrassing, though! Fun fact - historically the Aquitania picked up 26 survivors of the auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, after the latter was scuttled following her victory over the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney - even though stopping to rescue survivors was against orders! P.S. Did you not consider pursuing the cargo ship that got away? I would have done.

Yeah her moving at such a slow speed was indeed odd. Mechanical issues on one of the shops would be a good reason for the slow down. I thought about going after the Large Merchant but decided against it. I was more focused on escaping I souppose. Anyways thank you for all the information! I did not know very much about this vessel!

So I'm guessing this ship was carrying around 4000 troops, more or less. That's almost half a normal infantry division. More likely that all, or the majority of the SouthAfrican navy would go there to rescue any survivors. That's gonna be in the Australian papers for weeks, if it isn't kept a secret.

Whoever stuck a liner in a slow convoy should be shot for gross dereliction of duty, those things were built for 25 kts IIRC.

Great series, i appreciate you' re work a lot! I have only one question. How do you managed to make a supplies ships like Belchen work like U-Tankers in terms of Supplement Mod? I have seen you supply on these ship like on the U-Tankers and i hate to "ressuply" at the supply ships and begin the whole new patrol, you know what i mean ;). I've read on sh3 forums that you need to change the names of the supply ships by adding the "U" in the beggining of the name of the ship to get Supplement Mod to work on them but could you or anyone else advise on that topic? Once more great series, i love it! In advance im thankfull for any help ;)

Yup that is exactly what you need to do! Just go in and add 'U-' in front of the supply ships and you will be able to refit at them.

@@herrakaarme you can survive but the allies will become absurdly deadly by 44/45, unless you have a type XXI, you have basically no chance of suriving while fighting convoys

Why don't you ever use the Dick O'Cane method anymore? When I saw you do it in you SH4 I thought it might've been the single coolest thing I've ever seen anyone do in a Silent Hunter playthrough

I genuinely wish i could get this working, Wolf. Every time i play this it dtd 3/4 times before allowing me to play and it's a real pain. At the moment i am relegated to Uboat.
