Diary of a u-boat navigator: February 21st, 1945 Today the captain told us his plan: we are to sail through the seas that seperate Ireland and Britan in hopes of sinking merchants as they come in and out of these high traffic zones. Once again we shall throw the dice and hope that we don't enter any minefields. For me that means more work as i will try to guess what part of those seas the british have not mined. If we survive this, i shall ask the BdU back on shore to name this boat "the gambit boat" because to me that seemes like the only thing we have ever done in this boat. February 22nd, 1945 Today we had quite the day. Early in the morning our captain came up with a plan to attack a lone merchant in order to draw in a nearby enemy patrol so that we could potentialy attack it too. I think our captain has lost all sence of self preservation and is only trying to find an excuse for a torpedo attack. Perhaps he is doing this in order to spend all the torpedoes as fast as possible so that we could return to Bergen faster? Anyway, our attack had the wanted effect and the enemy patrol came to investigate. However, our captain didn't order an attack and we just waited for them to give up. Was he expecting a carrier? If so, i guess he wants to kill a hunter-killer squad? His mind process confuses me. Later, after the patrol left, we finished off the disabled merchant and went back to our planned route. Later that day, however, an enemy warship was identefied heading right towars us. We quickly turned our bow towards it and the captain fired a homing torpedo at it. The moment the torpedo detonated, a chain of loud secondary explosions followed, probably caused by the depth charges blowing up. The enemy ship was so close that we could hear the explosions quite well along with the ship breaking up in the process. After the explosions had stopped, the captain stepped away from the periscope, looked at us and said: "nobody survived that..." and then walked slowly away towards his bed. I could only guess what he saw from the periscope... After that, the 1st officer lowered the scope and ordered to return to course, we still have a patrol to finish..... (The story of our crew continues, hope you enjoyed this part. Today i had my first test of many to come, i hope i will pass em all so that i don't have to redo them at a later date. These episodes are a good way to mitigate the stress of writing my tests and seminars, so thank you for providing them Wolfpack :) . As always see you all next episode.)

“None of these sinkings gave been very dramatic.” Proceeds to sink a destroyer in under 10 seconds with the entire thing going up in flames.

That torp hit the depth charge rack area which detonated and in turn threw burning explosive material around the rear area. That material then probably got on the torpedo launchers which then detonated as well. Probably also ended up with exploding fuel or at least burning fuel and oil which more than likely ended up detonating the magazine.

It's 9 am so me drinking whiskey is within the bounds of Clint Eastwood's acceptable behaviors.

When this campaign ends when the wars over. I hope you will make a ending story for your character and what happened to him after the war and what he did.

That destroyer went under in just 46 seconds. Even if there were survivors, I highly doubt that a distress signal could have been sent. Looks like an all hands lost situation.

I really appreciate the way you open your episodes. The story telling gives your videos a lot of depth (no pun intended). Now, as a Tincan sailor myself, when you took out that Hunt Class, I felt it all the way to my bones. All hands lost no time to abandon ship.

That last ship went down in seconds! Well, maybe because a few parts of it went up first :P

Would really love to see an early war Type XXI play through. A lone Type XXI prototype performing sea trials while testing new wonder weapons and wreaking havoc everywhere she goes.

I think in order to balance out this series, the next one should be "The cannon fodder in the Iron Coffin" - Type VIIC u-boat with start of the carrier in June 1943 or January 1944.

Damn, what an ending. Those homing torps are utterly devastating and satisfying against DDs.

You know I always enjoy your videos. As far as torpedo attacks. Have you tried putting torpedoes with magnetic pistols just 5 ft under the draft of the target ship. It should do more damage.

The River Severn estuary is tricky - shallow water and many mudbanks. Some U boats did go there and then got sunk !

Homing torpedoes are awesome.

Blowing up anything that comes across your course is actually the right way to go. At that point in the war, everyone knew the tonnage war was lost. But if german u-boats would demonstratably have been able to blow up anything anywhere without even being deteced, that could have been a bargaining chip on the negotiation table for a not-completely-unconditional surrender.

Youre not in the Med here, but here's an interesting statistic: Of the 65 (?) U boats Admiral Doneitz ordered into the Mediterranean, not one ever returned to the Atlantic.

Really small observation, but I'm surprised that first merchant's electrics didn't die. Usually when you deliver your killing blow the vessel's lights go out almost right away.

You can get the hydrophone operator to pick up vessels you can hear by selecting the type from the clipboard drop-down (any type will work) and then clicking the checkmark.

Hey Wolfpack. Was wondering if you could do a tdc tutorial as I get the concept but in practice... For example torpedo speed and where on the scope to actually fire the torpedo. Most tutorials seem way to complicated as you make it look easy without all the crazy steps.

Try a light cruiser with a hunting group of two destroyers and a tramp steamer.

When this career ends, what are your plans, Wolfpack? Why not start a career in September of 1939 with a Type II or a Type VIIB and see how far you can get? You could make it more challenging by staying with the same type of boat (never upgrading beyond the type VII, for example). Or start in 1939 with a "type IXB" and just modify the game config files to make the IXB identical to the IXA which was historically available in September of '39?

The thought of the Reich having these Type 21 boats at the start of the war, if it started a few years later as Hitler wanted, is utterly terrifying. Not to mention the V1/2's and Tiger tanks, etc... Things may very well have been very different if Britain/France didnt grow a spine in 1939...
