So now we know the biggest statisitcal cause of the u-boats loss was the wish of the overconfident captains to meke the patrol exciting for their crews! What is the point of becoming a captain if all you do is following boring instructions and sticking to safe waters, right? Great episode, Wolfpack, sail safe!

Diary of a u-boat navigator: February 24th, 1945 Today i heard the sound that I hoped to never hear again, a soud that every submariner hates to hear, the dreaded ping of a destroyer's SONAR. For the first time, this boat was in real danger as depth charges started dropping near us. While the captain fired a homing torpedo in hopes of it hitting the destroyer, the torpedo, however, had other ideas and decided that a nearby merchant was it's target. Making use of the situation, the captain decided to use the wounded merchant as a shield, but, this did not last long and while we were disengaging, disaster struck. A depth charge exploded near the front of our submarine, and the next worst sound for a submariner could be heard, the sound of water coming in. The repair party was quickly put to work in order to stop the flooding in of water so that we woldn't hit the sea floor. Lucky for us all, the inexperienced sailors proved their worth and with the guidence of one of the officers were able to stop the flooding. Soon after that, the hydrophone operator told us that the enemy ship that was hit was going down, but, the situation at hand gave no time for celebrations and we all made ready if the next depth charge exploded near our sub. However, luck was once again on our side, and the Tommy destroyer soon gave up the chase. A huge sigh of relief overcame us all, and soon we finished the repairs. This experience had at least one good thing for it, it convinced our captain that the type 21 was no costal submarine and so he decided to head towards the deeper waters west of Ireland. We once again pushed luck, this time, however, luck gave us a sign that we should not do such a thing again, for luck is known to abandon everything and everyone whenever it wants to. February 26th, 1945 The last 2 days were much less stressful as we attacked 2 lone merchants. One took 2 torpedoes while the other was more stuborn and took 3. The only downsides to this were delaying our arrival to the deeper waters and a encounter with a destroyer squadron, but, nothing bad came out of it and this proved to be a much safer alternative to attacking convoys in shallow waters. Now we are on our way towards the deeper waters that are located west of Ireland. Our torpedo supply is also low, so i have high hopes for us soon heading back to Bergen where we will be able to rest from this experience. Who knows, maybe by the time that our next patrol will be up, the war situation will finaly be resolved. I don't care what happens any more, i want to be be able to come back to Hamburg and see my family and my dear Erika again.... (A close experience this episode, but the story goes on, hope you liked it. By the name of the episode, i was scared that i would have to write an epilogue already, but thankfully that day is not today. Today, however, i did pass my 1st test, only 5 left before the 2nd part of my academic education begins after which i will have to write another 5 tests... oh well, after all that is done, i will be able to get myself a job in the ivory tower as well :) . See you all next time).

The enemy in Silent Hunter 3 is a lot more aggressive than in UBOAT.

So how long does it take to repair damage in this game? Not a whole lot of war left...maybe you should start plotting a course to south america the next time you leave port :P.

Wolfpack, your coastal adventures gave me some idea: maybe you can start a SH series in the future where you only commanded costal subs like Type II and gradually work up to Type XXIII.

Cook's diary: Kurt Degen, Feb 26th, 1945 When I was told I'd serve on this new vessel, I didn't imagine our days would be this stressful. Instead of creeping up on the Tommies silently and being never noticed our Captain seems to be obsessed with finding out how long our luck can last. Pass the Kanal? Check Cross minefields? Check Swim into convoys? Check Being chased by escorts and depth charged? Check I swear if the enemy won't kill me, heart attack will. I suspect we're close to the end of the war but I'm thinking it's less likely I'll live to see it as days go by. My brother Wolf, who is a hydrophone operator on U-861, a Type IXD2 boat says his captain is not sane either. He told me how they went to Norfolk last December, swam into a port to sink an escort carrier stationed there, only to find it capsized due to some unknown issue so he decided to put a hole into a docked destroyer instead.... or how he makes a habit of crossing the Kanal all the time, sticking to the French shoreline, while running on fumes for fuel. Or the time they defeated 2 merchants in a gunnery duel while they were under attack by the RAF also in the Kanal. He said that was the moment he just gave up on ever seeing his twins with his own eyes, yet they somehow survived that ordeal with superficial damage. Mind you, that happened last month. I'd have committed suicide right there and then... I'm pretty sure these 2 Captains would be good friends, if they aren't already....

Nice job, you've done your part to help save the whales. Continue taking out these whaling ships and we'll have them fighting alongside our U-Boat force any day now! The only problem is every time we try to sign a treaty with the whales, their copy quickly dissolves. Torp pre-detonated because, at this time in the war, Adolph had to buy them wholesale from Wal-Mart. While they do far more damage, mag strikes take longer to kill. Plus, you usually don't get a "Fireball".

I think that the reason the second torpedo didn't sink the ship was that it impacted on an already flooded area; perhaps a bit on the stern would have sunk it.

I really loved SH3 back then... was fun to try VII, IX, and XXI boats in patrol was so rewarding, one could gradually upgrade the boat then go to a more advanced type. Unfortunately much less effort was spent on the crew management and abilities, that is the spot where Uboat shines. Looking at this old beauty polished up by nice mods, the target ships look more realistic both in size and sinking. In Uboat, everything either sinks in a minute or does not, but no slow sinks... in overall, I think Uboat gives a better immersion with its crew mechanics (even if crew composition is not realistic...), item system like food, shells, medkits, spareparts, machinery maintenance and breakdowns, off boat diving/checking missions and so on. However one has to admit, this game still has its magic, and really takes care the simulation part, like the manual TDC and target data collection. Even battery charge has its cost, like it slows you down, in Uboat ppl use the battery like free fuel as it not yet the fuel cost of recharge implemented.

You should definitely do a tutorial series on the mods you use, where to get them and how to play. I love this game but have a lot of issues using torpedoes and getting successful hits

Anyone ever make a WW1 mod for this? That would be cool to see. You're pretty much restricted to directly around England but ASW tech is virtually not existent. It's interesting that more ships were sunk by Uboats in WW1 than in WW2, even though there was less of them and they were worse. This argument is counteracted by the late adoption of convoys and the ASW thing.

Deep water is much more comfy . In a XXI , I remember shooting torps below periscope depth , you shoot well enough to go by your plot. Also homing torps are great below peri.. I don't at present have SHIII to check.

The absolutely worst moment to peek-a-boo a destroyer with a periscope in 1945 is when it's less than 500 meters away, pinging you. I would have just remained at the same depth and raised the periscope enough to be able to see the surroundings from below the surface. That destroyer definitely noticed the periscope and only by luck did it not lob a hedgehog salvo at the sub.

Watching these videos has me installing Silent Hunter III on steam but I am curious what mods are you running? I had some mods for Silent Hunter IV but never really modded Silent Hunter III outside of that one mod I forgot the name that created a back story for your crew as well as tweaked it. I wish I knew its name now cause I want to download that one again for sure.

They're pretty big and heavy, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just accepted the reduced endurance of battery damage for the remainder of a patrol instead of trying to carry and install replacement cells.

anyone notice the bodies floating in the water at the end of the video (one was kicking his legs), i've seen bodies go flying when the torp hits but never floating or legs kicking in the vanilla version, must be the mods, lol!
