Wolfpack in the Silent Hunter III, Type IX Campaign: "Oh shit, a destroyer!" Wolfpack in the Silent Hunter III, Type XXI Campaign: "Cool, time to kill another destroyer!"

April 24th, 1945 In the early hours, the crew once again gathered in the submarine pen at Bergen. After their submarine had been inspected for the last time, they boarded their u-boat and soon everything was ready. Another patrol was about to begin... As the submarine began to slowly leave the port, Karl was once again enjoying the view from the submarine's conning tower as he knew that soon they will once again dive and spend the rest of their patrol underwater. Soon the captain climbed up and joined him in his moment. After a moment of silence, Karl spoke: "it's too quiet today..." and after another moment the captain replied: "indeed it is..." . Their feeling was soon proven true as a watchman yelled: "Bombers spotted to port! Enemy bombers to port!" Quickly, the captain and the N.O. looked through their binoculars and saw the enemy air raid incoming. The captain then quickly started to shout orders down the conning tower: "Man the AA guns! Rudder hard to starboard!!" the crew began to quickly follow those orders and soon the AA guns were manned and the submarine started to turn. The air raid sirens from Bergen could also be heard as the bombers came closer. Soon, the AA guns from the ships and land opened fire quickly joined by the u-boat's own aa armament. Bombs began to fall, followed by the allied machinegun fire, some of which hit the submarine. And then, just as quickly it started it was over. Having observed the raid, Karl was glad to find out that no bullet hat hit him and soon the small amount of damage on the u-boat had been fixed; deep down, however, Karl hoped that a bomb would hit the submarine so that they could have instantly turned back to Bergen and safely spent the last few weeks of this war in port, it was not to be, however, and the submarine headed out of the fjord like it had before.... Diary of a u-boat navigator: April 25th, 1945 Once again, we dive below the waves, once again we patrol the waters in vain, how much longer of this? How much? The captain told me his plan, we are to draw in all the enemy ASW efforts in order to save as many of our fellow submariners as possible. I don't know if i should consider this act as noble, brash, brave or insane, all i hope is that he does not get us killed in the process. So far, we survived under his command, i hope that luck has not abandoned us yet, the war is nearing its end, everyone knows that, we only need to survive these last days... April 28th, 1945 Technology.... no... God... God has saved us today like He has all this time. I hope that we will be able to repay His kindness once this war is over... to make up for everyone we have killed during this war to make up for everyone whom we have wronged... I hope He will forgive us all.......... After writing these words, Karl couldn't continue to write, his hand was shaking too much after the last encounter with a british destroyer. While they had sunk the destroyer, it was a close one. What if the torpedo didn't work? What if it failed to lock on? The waters were shallow, the destroyer was close, and they were still at periscope depth. In his mind, that would have been it. But now, they are still alive, and still in enemy waters. Closing his diary, Karl tried to get himself under control, as long as the war was still going on, the enemy will still be trying to kill them. There is no room for his emotions to take over him, not until this war ends. Until then, there is only room for survival... (Another small novel for you today, hope you liked it. Have to say, was not expecting a cliffhanger like that, hope that the crew survived, otherwise i will have to write a sad epilogue instead of a (relatively) nice one. Anyway, the story will continue when the cliffhanger is resolved, one way or another... )

The homing torpedoes always pop a destroyer really good when they hit. They go for the screws and the rear is where a lot of the stuff that goes boom is kept :D

I was reading the Type XXI assessment completed by the Americans recently, and I could've sworn there was a note that the Type XXI had a thicker hull that both functioned to improve it's diving depth but also intentionally made it to impervious to small caliber weapon fire (50 cals) due to the impact strafing had been having on the Type VII's and IX's. It is a bit unrealistic therefore that you'd be taking such severe damage from long-range pot-shot's from a B-17's gunners. I can definitely forgive SH3 though, as it is one of the few weaknesses of the Type XXI in-game :)

The war ends when you want it to end, hehe. My grandfather was in the Kriegsmarine, as part of a Motor-Torpedo-Boat crew. (He had applied to transfer to Bismarck and got the gig, but luckily for him and for me, I guess, he got wounded shortly before she departed and was replaced.) The crew of his boat refused to surrender at the end of the war and they kept sort of fighting for another 2 weeks or so. They stole ammo for their MGs from a air base and kept raiding ships, but luckily without killing anybody. They just boarded the ships and blew up their rudders and stuff like that. Otherwise they would probably have been executed when they finally were caught. It probably helped that they got caught in some Belgian fishing village, while releasing the unharmed crew of a British Motor-Torpedo-Boat they had sunk. Still, they were sentenced to 20 years of hard labor for piracy, but most of them got eventually released early after a few years, because they volunteered to disarm sea mines. Must have been a weird group of dudes. Two of them joined the French Foreign Legion and became mercenaries afterwards. My granddad was a bit less extreme, but was still looking for adventure. He because a globe trotting engineer, installing and repairing cocoa and coffee roasting machines in Africa, Asia and South America. He still somehow managed to get in trouble for smuggling medicine into Haiti in the late 50s, or some shit like that.
