Silicon oil and acrylic paint do amazing things

Silicone oil is often used in acrylic pouring techniques due to its unique interaction with acrylic paint. Here's a detailed explanation of how and why silicone oil affects acrylic paint:
Viscosity and Flow: Silicone oil has a low viscosity, meaning it is very fluid. When added to acrylic paint, it reduces the overall viscosity, making the paint more fluid and easier to manipulate. This is particularly useful in techniques like pouring and fluid art, where artists aim to create intricate, flowing patterns.
Cell Formation: One of the most sought-after effects in acrylic pouring is the creation of cells, which are small, bubble-like formations within the paint. Silicone oil is less dense than acrylic paint, so when it is added to the paint mixture and poured onto a surface, it tends to rise to the top, pushing the denser paint out of the way. This displacement creates circular, cell-like patterns. Heat, such as from a torch, can enhance this effect by making the oil rise more quickly.
Surface Tension: Silicone oil has a different surface tension compared to acrylic paint. When mixed, this difference causes the paint to separate in certain areas, further contributing to cell formation and unique textures. The silicone essentially breaks the cohesive bonds in the paint, allowing different colors to push through and create a marbled effect.
Hydrophobic Properties: Silicone oil is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. Since acrylic paint is water-based, the repelling action of silicone can cause interesting separation and movement within the paint. This can result in a variety of visual effects, such as streaks, swirls, and distinct separation of colors.
Stability and Durability: While silicone oil is great for creating effects, it can also affect the longevity and durability of the artwork. Silicone is not a permanent part of the paint and can rise to the surface over time, potentially creating issues with varnishing or sealing the artwork. Artists often need to clean the surface thoroughly to remove any silicone residue before applying a final protective layer.
In summary, silicone oil affects acrylic paint by altering its viscosity, surface tension, and flow characteristics, leading to the formation of cells and other interesting patterns that are highly prized in fluid art.

Why not use floetrol or another pouring medium? Like GAC 800 or liquitex pouring medium? There are so many to choose from. You can even use watered down Elmer’s glue to get great cells and save cash if you don’t want to spend too much on a pouring medium. It will also help save paint. You will use so much less paint with a pouring medium. You can create beautiful cells with different pouring mediums and you don’t have to wash or scrub your painting after to get all of the silicone off before varnishing it or a resin top coat. Your base is so thick. When it dries it doesn’t crack or craze? It must take ages for that to completely dry. How long does it normally take to dry?

I'm going to try so many things, and I'll definitely make a video on cheaper ideas. I came across Silicon and just playing with it. I got told WD40 is great, too, so I'll do more content with these options. So far I haven't had any cracking other than when I did a second pour over one I didn't like but made a beautiful golden crack that really made the piece. It takes about 2 days to fully dry and so far I haven't done a top coat, but I will do a resin coat for some of these pieces. Pouring is brand new to me, and I'll definitely take all the advice yo create more beautiful work. Appreciate your comment 🙏

@@malachi.createsWD40 has to be scrubbed off of the painting after as well. You don’t need that stuff to make cells. You are going to find better ways. More masterful ways then little hacks that just makes things harder in the long run. If you don’t completely scrub that oil off of the painting before varnishing or putting on resin, it will ruin the resin and leave spots that are void. If you buy Australian floetrol online you can use that in one of your colors of paint and create cells. Then use other or less expensive pouring mediums for the other colors!

I have a question, there’s always some dripping on the back of the Canvas, do you leave it like that or what do you do?
@malachi.creates
@malachi.creates 23 күн бұрын
I usually use an offset paint tool to scrap the underneath of the canvas to prevent drip like paint formations. I'll wait till most of it is set and then do that, and it removes the drops

Neat man! Have you tried a splash of WD-40 instead of silicone oil? How much do you sell these for at an art show?

Try floetrol, you use a lot less paint. 😊
Wait for the last one! 👀
