I have this 'our boys at the front' attitude to Ukraine. Just as if England were giving its men. I have tuned in every day to Ukraine news since the start of this awful war and given when I can to United24 and a few others. I will never tire of supporting this incredible country.

Traditional manufacturing involving large factories will struggle in wartime. R & D can flourish. So can information companies. We think of China and India when we consider manufacturing and we think of Silicon Valley when we talk about infotech and R & D.

Honestly not at all surprised that WW2 machine AA guns (I'm guessing she means something like the Oerlikon or Bofors autocannons - they're functionally just really big machine guns) are one of the most cost-effective solutions for shooting down drones like the Shahed, honestly - those drones are built to be real cheap, so any high tech solution is by definition not a cost effective one. And WW2 was a time when we didn't yet have high tech solutions to combatting air power while also having a *very* strong motivation to figuring out how to fight an enemy's air power. I wonder if anyone's sitting on a stockpile from way back then - both Oerlikon and Bofors were produced in truly astonishing quantities, and the stockpile of WWII surplus stuff in the US lasted them so long that almost everything wound up being technologically obsolete before they ran out of it. If anyone's still sitting on such a stash of ancient AA guns, might be worth looking them over and sending anything that can still fire over to Ukraine...these things were meant to be used en-masse, so the more Ukraine gets, the better.

I'm always somewhat surprised when people talk about how the war effects insurance costs for things like grain shipments and the like - I didn't get very deep into the insurance industry at all, but I did take the introductory course required for insurance agents starting out in Canada, and it was very much a standard thing that damage due to terrorism or acts of war are listed in the common exceptions for comprehensive insurance (that is, the insurance plans that cover "all losses excepting the following:"). This included all types of insurance in the course - house, business, travel health insurance, etc. It didn't cover international shipping, but it very much implied that, nah, if geopolitics is involved in blowing up your stuff, no insurance company is gonna help, no matter what that stuff is.

How are Ukraine going to counter the Russia FAB glide bombs? They’re causing huge amounts of damage on the battle lines and in Ukrainian cities. They’re very cheap to produce and Russia are developing even bigger versions (FAB-3000) which will be twice the size of the current FAB-1500s.

@@OsamaBinKevo thanks for responding, i appreciate this is a slightly random comment, do you also know what’s the relative range of the glide bombs compared to air to air or ground to air missiles. I.e. would the patriots need to get very close to the front lines (and expose themselves) to be effective deterrants?
@GrahamCStrouse
@GrahamCStrouse 13 күн бұрын
Better and longer range air-to-air ordnance would help a lot. More mobile SPAAG systems would also be useful. Doesn’t even have to be fancy. Some Bofors 40mm/70 strapped to the back of a heavy truck chassis with modern targeting systems might make a difference if they could be acquired in bulk. Those glide bombs are basically modern versions of the old Nazi Fritz X. Only real difference is they use GPS instead of manual TV guidance. Ukraine needs more dakka.
