I’ve been natural since 2008 and in 2019 I decided to wear my hair straight primarily and I see so many less fairy knots and less breakage overall. It’s also less manipulation and stress for me. My hair has been thriving since. ☺️

exactly. Its about letting the hair rest. All that was mentioned can mess your hair up if they are installed badly and if the caring for them is lacking so unless the clients aren't good at caretaking of the hair and/or the install of them isn't good then ok but generally all of that is fine. Now EXCESSIVE wear of them, virtually never taking them off so your hair can breathe for a while, is where I can see there being a problem.

Braids grew my hair from collarbone length to waist in 14-15 months. HOWEVER, I did them at home and I made sure the style wasn't too tight. I noticed professional braiders tend to make the styles extremely tight and that can cause breakage from too much tension.

I just stick to two strand twist and take it down for a twist out. Then, I turn the twist out into an afro two to three days before I go to the salon to repeat the process. I think representation is very important. Wearing my own hair has been challenging because I can’t do my own hair. However, I love my hair, loving and accepting the challenges of what’s naturally ours creates a sense of pride. I feel a sense of boldness when I’m wearing my twist outs and afros. You don’t like it? Tough. I don’t wear it for anyone but me. 😂 Seriously, I get a lot of compliments. In the beginning, it’s hard, and your hair might look a mess or be difficult to manage. People might have something to say. Be bold and push through, learning how to do our hair takes time. I go to the salon for help. However, I still had to learn some basics. I’m thinking about putting more time into learning how to to do my hair. I know it won’t be easy.

The hair only grows so many inches a month. Are you sure you meant 14-15 months? From collar to waist is very much in such little time. I’m sincerely interested in what you did and the accuracy of the results.

Sometimes you get clients who are complete naturals but just get silk presses to maintain their hair.? What am I missing here? Whew! that's a lot for me. I am ultra conservative natural 100% of the time(15yrs). Let me explain how I got here. I used to wear wigs 100% of the time to cover my natural hair. Yep! I wasn't comfortable wearing my natural hair. What changed? I went to visit my sister in NC. She took me to her beautician who cut my hair in a style that was fire! The stylist precision cutting expert skills brought out my curls like never before and I was shocked at how beautiful my curls were. Never went back to wigs, that was 4 years ago. Also, I was wearing braided styles back-to-back, now I only get it done once a year when I go on vacation. My hair is thriving a little past mid-back length. Ladies sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to get comfortable with your own hair in its natural state, spend time and effort and it may win you over.
@Faith4vincera
@Faith4vincera Жыл бұрын
This, this, this… no disrespect to the beautician or any… but any heat service alters hair texture, especially if continued. No amount of products is going to prevent that. You can’t love and embrace what you don’t even know you have. I stopped relaxing my hair in 2004, stopped straightening my hair with every wash in 2010, and now I’m forcing myself to push through the awkward phase to grow it as long as it will. I also had a BOMB tapered cut, and would just cut it every year when it got to that awkward length…. Too long to just leave, too short to pull up. Pray for me yall😂 … thus far I’m doing good. No scissor happiness here. I will say, I can’t wash and go forever, so I’m also exploring some no-heat stretched styles and protective styles to give me some variety.
@shelltalkshair
@shelltalkshair Жыл бұрын
Yes some of my clients get silk Presses 4x a year to stretch their hair out and get a trim. Most clients don’t just silk press back to back, I think that’s the part you may be missing. I encourage clients to wear their natural hair and to still rock the styles they like such as sew ins and wigs. I even tell them to rock braids 1-2x a year if they really like that style.

@Shell Grows Hair Respectively, thanking you for this information. I just wanted to share and express my experience. Your client's hair looks healthy and beautiful! I did a big chop in 2018 at age 59, and didn't go to a beauty shop for two years. No protective styles. When I finally went to the shop for my first silk press and trim, I was shocked at how long my hair had grown. Now my hair length is below my bra strap. I go to the shop at least four times a year for silk press and trims.

I'm a mom & im tender-headed, so I wear my natural hair in between braids so i don't neglect my hair. I add my own braids/extensions because I can control the tension. Also, don't forget to use a braid spray on your roots and along the hair and oil the scalp with braids. It will keep away the friction and dryness between the braid and hair that causes breakage at the root. The roots are just as important as the ends‼️

I grew up in a time when girls and women didn't wear a lot of fake hair or wigs. I was going through an old college year book and I was amazed seeing so much healthy full looking hair on black women..yes some were relaxed or straightened, but many had think mane. I wanted to get weave but I saw my friend get addicted. She no longer wanted her real hair and I saw her real hair just start to thin and disappear from her scalp, and she had bald spots. I had another friend who wore braids so tight she no longer has edges. I think the scalp needs sunshine and to breath with circulation. You can't keep your head covered in fake hair or tight in braids for it to flourish. I have been natural for 20 years..I flat iron or roller set. It grew long to bra strap. After I had a hysterectomy, my hair fell out, thinned badly and I need color which I love. I don't like what has happened since hysterectomy. My doctor says my hormones are off since no longer have estrogen so it is affecting a lot. I may try the oil. I am not sure anything can help with you lose your ovaries and uterus. It's been a struggle and change didn't expect. I've always had the big, puffy hair, which I loved, now it thinned where I can wash, twist, take out no puffy on natural, but color treated hair.

i remember women wearing their own hair too. I also remember wigs were not worn by younger women unless she had hair problems or she was a celebrity. It was also a time where when false hair was worn you wouldn't talk to openly about it in public and always wore the hair to blend in with your own. Make it look like it was yours not talk openly about weave this and that. This is why so many other folks keep thinking black women can't grow their own hair long. Too much talk and for some dependence on it like with your friend.

I think that everyone should do with their hair what is best for them. My father raised me to just be myself and to do whatever is in my best interest. I think everyone should just do what works best for them! What works best for me as being a street natural. I love my natural hair its too time consuming in the morning especially when I just wanna up and leave for work. I'll have to undo the hair reapply some kind of grease/cream cuz my hair is high porosity it acts like I don't hydrate it, then I gotta style it, that in itself Is at least 20 mins and depending on the style that could easily be half an hour.

I stopped wearing braids because I recognize my hair was not thriving, I've been wearing wigs or just 2 braids to the back and my hair is thriving, My stylist suggested heat training so I am likely going that route as well, with the regular silk presses but I also like my AFRO, so I'm unsure if I should still heat train. . .

Hi, first thank you so so much, i have question, my routine is :wash my hair every 2 weeks, deep condition , put leave in then blow dry my hair, and finally put some butter and style my hair. My Q is at the end of 1st week i need to remoisturize my hair, is it ok to use leave in? it makes my hair return to kinky state. I don’t know how to keep moisturizing on blow out / pressed hair. i find your page recently, i am figure out to heat training my hair, i am natural for whole life, but i start my growth journey in 2020 but struggled until 6 months ago. finally i find the good routine and product for my hair, my hair is longer than it was. however, i struggles a-lot with fairy knots, which is something i wasn’t experience before 2020. This is what I believe: i used to use grease and blow out my hair, and keep it stretched, ( i never put leave in). but now I follow natural hair rules, and i use leave in which makes my hair curls, also i avoid heat. I figure many causes for fairy knots I experience and correct them, it is decrease but still present, i decided to come back to blow dry my hair, my be it will disappear. also from my experience with my hair , I believe , somehow my hair is growing faster when it is pressed or blow out, but since i started my grow journey, i avoid heat and flat twist is my go to style.

Beautiful! My hair normally grows very fast, thick, & healthy but within the last two years it's been thinning in the front a bit. Mostly in the Spring and Fall. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could use? And I also have breakouts from psoriasis.

Have you been using any edge control in that area or any tension hairstyles? Be sure to wash your hair frequently if you suffer from psoriasis.

I’m done wearing natural hair styles after 13 years. I’m keeping my hair stretched from now on whether through silk presses, rod sets, etc. I’m sick of the single strand knots.

So since you say braids are not the best protective styles for hair growth especially with the edges, what would be the best style for growing out edges and would silk presses be the best way to go. I haven’t had heat in my natural hair in about 10 years, and I’m trying to grow my hair out longer. In my situation it’s growing but at the same time it’s growing slowly

I usually get straight sew ins. But when I want to leave my edges alone I get a curly sew in. I don’t have to use heat at all. I just spray water and conditioner on the weave and my leave out. My hair has experienced the most growth with that style.
