Not that long ago car companies were abandoning inline 6-cylinder engines due to their cost and packaging constraints. But it turns out V6s were "so last century" and everyone from Land Rover to Mercedes and Mazda is hopping back on the inline-6 bandwagon. Why? Because they are fantastic. Much like the Mercedes EQ inline-6, the JLR 6-cylinder engine is also a mild hybrid with a few tricks up its sleeve.

Great review, succinct, articulate and no gimmicks. Gives me the information I need in an intelligent way. I’ve subscribed. Picking up my new RRS in a couple of weeks. We’ve had three LR products in the past and the only time they’ve been in the shop has been for annual servicing. Having said that, the five year warranty now gives me some additional peace of mind.

Got an X5 40i with almost every option available, including the Off Road pack. I got the pack mostly because it had air suspension and the M sport differential. Have taken it mildly off the road on some trails and gravel, but Pirelli P-Zero tires prohibit anything more. It's gotta be the best value here. For 86K and great lease rates, it's the fastest competitor, with handling better than a comparably priced Porsche Cayenne. Not sure why anyone would get any competitor. Plus, the Q8 has horrific engine lag (check the forums). Looked at the GLE, but it has hard plastics all across the lower areas, the ride is too floaty, and a lot of glare on the tach screen because it's exposed. The Cayenne gets way too expensive on the S variants with all the options (over 100K to match my X5). Too many fingerprints on the Q8 center stack piano black. The XC90 4 cylinder at 70K plus is a non-starter. The Range Rover reliability issues coupled with lack of any discounts and horrendous lease programs also killed that avenue. So, X5 it was.

I think the people in these comments misunderstand LR's business model. They're an exclusive, status oriented company. They compete with companies like bentley, mercedes, audi, and so on. It's not meant to be a "value proposition" because the people who purchase these vehicles have the money to not worry about the value of a vehicle. My family owns a range rover and we love it, we've had no issues and it's a lovely car to drive.

The weird thing is JLR is the only auto manufacturer that offers a 10 year bumper to bumper warranty on a 10-15 year old vehicle or older, IF you can show all dealer maintenance records during the vehicles lifetime. Pauline Weinberger yeah! First owner is a lease. The second owner will be a “certified pre-owner” then the third owner will get it after the dealer dumps it at auction and some shady dealer on the street corner picks it up and sells it someone who wants that Range Rover lifestyle but lives in an apartment complex in the worse part of town and in 2 months the rear air suspension will fail and then you’ll see it riding leaning back. Then the electric supercharger will fail and you’ll see it in the Walmart parking lot with a for sale sign.

If Land Rover/Jaguar could get there act together on reliability, which is the biggest reason a lot of people stay away, imagine how many more Range Rover's and Jaguar vehicles could be sold. IMO Land Rover/Range Rover makes the best SUVs in terms of interior design, exterior design, engine power and offroad capability even though most owners dont offroad their's. If they solve the reliability issue they could make so much more money.

I did my comparison last year and went with the X5. I highly doubt that I'll take it off road. It's been serving as school bus for my kids and grocery runner. Powerful enough that if I don't engage cruise control, I'll be doing 100 mph not knowing. Comfortable when it drives itself (driving assistant pro). My kids don't fight over climate control. Well, these features are all same in all three vehicle I think. I had 5 series before I bought the X5. I got so used to wireless Apple CarPlay, I put other brands on distant seconds. I also liked the physical buttons on the X5 compare to touch sensitive buttons. When your fingers are cold or dry, touch interface works intermittently. Good luck trying to touch anything with glove on during cold season.

Alex, I was just wondering why the Porsche Cayenne was not included as part of the mix here. I would think that is also a luxury SUV similar to the others and similar in size. Do you feel that is a different category? We have our second Cayenne and do really like it. Especially after redesigned now in 19. The looks of the Range Rover Sport is what we like about that but keep falling back to Porsche based on the seat comfort and the handling, especially making quicker movements. Looking for another car and just wondering your thoughts. Personally I thought the X5, while I love it, was a minor step down to the Range Rover Sport. We had an X5 and nobody ever said Wow the X5, but I do feel they look at the Porsche and Range Rover as a higher level than the Mercedes and BMW.

"All that was old is new again...." My first car was a 1954 Kaiser with an inline 6 that offered a fire-breathing 125 HP. :) I followed it up with a '63 Dodge Dart that got me though college with its famous Slant6. It offered even more scalding performance with 145 HP. 0-60 mph....Well, it got there eventually. I'm not going to be rushing out to get a Range Rover Sport. (Have a kid to send to college.) But I do like SUV's in the RR's size category (192" in length). And I was struck my Alex' comment about the utility of a third row in crossovers of this size. We have a KIA Sorento with a surprisingly accommodating third row for its size (189" in length.) Not suitable for three adults or even for two adults for an extended journey but extremely convenient for occasions when we need to transport more than 5 passengers and would otherwise have to use two vehicles. On the other hand the Sorento offers 3" more legroom and 11" more shoulder room than the RR Sport. And I could buy three Sorentos for the price of the RR Alex drove. :)

What if you lived in Vietnam? Would it be considered an endless "dong" pit, since that's their national currency? I suppose it might be an endless "yen" pit in Japan, an endless "rupee" pit in India, an endless "peso" pit in Mexico, an endless "ruble" pit in Russia. Could it even be an endless "euro" pit in the European Union?

Heated front seats, a homelink remote, and 3 zone auto climate aren’t standard on a vehicle that starts at nearly 70 grand. That is a horrible decision by Land Rover. Those are extremely common features that one would expect on any luxury vehicle, especially one that expensive

You can buy a GLE X5 or Q8 and have the "newest model" for ~6 more years. Range Rover's current model is already 7 years old and probably in it's last year of production.

$114k for the top of the trim Range Rover... Endless money pit! A vehicle you can only enjoy when you lease. L A fully loaded KIA Telluride got better options and is more reliable, looks better and has the best warranty for half the price of this. Lol

But does it have a supercharged v8? Actually good off road if the owner chooses to take it off pavement? Holds its value? Its a still a Kia and it just doesn't compare.

@@ramonj08 No a Telluride doesn't have a supercharged V8 but yes it holds it's value and has a great warranty which the Range Rover doesn't. You leave but don't own a Range Rover because cost of ownership isn't worth the very few miles of actual driving. Lol

RR isnt the strongest in terms on reliabilty, way too many offroad gadgets = More to go wrong but while you all mock its relability and saying 'ALL' RR are bad or garbage but what i find abit funny is lots of people buys these cars when they look afforadble and they run them on a shoe string, It dont get looked after, it gets thrashed and abused and dont get maintained or service well and they do break the keyboarders raves on about on how bad they are. I never own a RR but one of my friend who had one for almost 2 years and the only issue she had was a faulty third break light, however another friend did had his RR sport broken down (something to do with the gearbox), his previous car was a Audi B7 RS4 (lnice sound) which he thrash it alot so you can imagin what he was like in a V8 RR sport, fortunately he is wealthy enough to repaire it (you broke it , you fix it) unlike most that would just go on a computer and complain about it.....alot. If RR are that bad RR would have been long gone into the history books as nobody will ever buy them and you all know that. Oh and to add on to that, according to Carwow, the relability rating for the Land Rover/Range Rover is 38% while Porsche is only 2% higher, Go figure.

My new 2020 RR PHEV had engine light still turned on after 3 times back to dealer service with changing parts. Now in service 4th time and they said that all this model cars in the world will be recalled for new hybride software that will be ready at the end of September 2020. 3 months after buying a new very expensive car, still stuck to service. Dealer said that JLR refused replacement or refund. I can not even reach the customer service despite my multiple attempts. UNRELIABLE CAR! HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!

When you look at a BMW X5; naaaaa! Range Rover Sports all day! There is something else that makes you buy RRS. I don’t even like the BMW dash. If you want to race, buy something else. Too many cabs are Mercedes! Naa! RRS all day!
