@magnificentmuttley154 4 жыл бұрын
...No explanation is necc for Pail McCartney or Geddy Lee. Just dont let them crowd out other self-accompanying bassists of great skill. We may all have equal rights from God's p.o.v., but we weren't all created with equal gifts... Many of these men & women on my list are grossly unrelated. Then again, many had no desire for the epic-level of fame which McCartney attained to & still has. Others shouldve received proper public recognition & critical acclaim decades ago: Steve Winwood -- Singer, multi-instrumentalist, & R&M man. He IS a one-man band & recording & mixing engineer all to himself. You name it, he plays it, with exception of brasswind & woodwind George Benson -- ditto. Everything Steve does, George does Benjamin Orr of the Cars -- Leading alto, backing singer (alto & tenor), songwriter. Rest In Peace, Ben, both you & Ric: 1947--2000 Janice Marie Johnson of A Taste of Honey -- Songwriter, lead soprano, backing tenor, bassist (chief instrument), rhythum guitar, 7 piece drumset Timothy B. Dalton** of the Eagles -- Backing tenor & alto, underrated & under-employed as a lead singer, bassist, songwriter Marcus Miller -- Dear God! Blues & jazz capacities of celestial heights: true blues scale, diminished augmented & altered minor scales. Only jazz artists that compare are Duke Ellington or Miles Davis, truly Lester Snell -- Chiefly a bassist, but also a rythum & strings arranger, songwriter, & producer. Not a vocalist, but who cares. Time will escape me if I name off the many acts that he was instrumental in making a success of. A direct pupil of the great Richard Hammond & an associate of Clive Davis. (Not an assoc producer of Clive, but a friend) both Hammond & Davis enjoyed the pleasure of producing Aretha Franklin, firsthand... Clive is originating founder of Arista Records *EDIT:* Yes, that's Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles! My mistake 🤬

Luigi Cornielles, it just takes practice... one of the tricks is when the phrasing of the lyrics is actually in sync with the bassline, other times you have to separate the two. Not easy for sure, and then at the end of the night, one person realizes what you did and compliments you, and it’s NEVER going to be a female !

McCartney´s masterpiece. The music, the choirs, the bass chords. It´s a tremendous answer to John ("...and what´s wrong with that?") McCartneys´s greatness would be seen with the years to come. Timeless song.
@nycinstyle
@nycinstyle 9 жыл бұрын
In the 1970's, Paul McCartney was criticized at times by John Lennon and various music critics for writing so called light senseless pop songs about love. Music critics were even questioning McCartney's ability for writing great music - like he had done earlier in his career. This song was McCartney's answer he gave to those "brilliant" music critics. "Silly Love Songs" topped the charts nearly the entire Spring/Summer of 1976, and finished the year at #1 in Billboards list of best songs of 1976. On a side note, the beginning of this song sounds to me like a factory making and churning out silly love songs. Silly love songs? Keep them coming, Mr. McCartney. We'll take them all.
@taffysaur

@at90percent
@at90percent 9 жыл бұрын
nycinstyle The other thing that is brilliant about this song is that he wrote the melody to be extremely simple so that it wouldn't conflict with his cool bass line and also makes it much easier for him to sing while he is playing such a complex base line. When you get right down to it the first verse of the song is basically on one note, again allowing him to focus on the complex bass line.
@nycinstyle
@nycinstyle 9 жыл бұрын
Pianoman 70s style Yes, I agree. No one will ever doubt someone who says Paul McCartney is quite simply a FANTASTIC songwriter. His phenomenal success as a songwriter is second to none.
@gordonsmith5282

Why did Lennon take such a stance on McCartney for writing silly love songs? Despite the fact on Double Fantasy Lennon's tracks were silly love songs, I'm not saying any of the songs are bad I actually love them. But his love songs weren't much different from McCartney's ones!
@at90percent
@at90percent 8 жыл бұрын
Gordon Smith Well, Double Fantasy came out in 1980. A good seven to nine years after Silly Love Songs. John perhaps had a change of mind and heart when he now had a family in the way that Paul did. Living with a wife and child he now loved. Or perhaps he was playing those mind games.

He’s good and the bass lines on many of his songs are creative but he’s not the best. Because then you would have to include the different styles of music and each style has musicians where that’s their forte in a certain style. Paul McCartney isnt a straight up jazz bass player or funk player for example. He can have influences on the style, but to be the best all-around no. I’m sure there are studio musician bass players that can more readily Play different styles. That’s why professional musicians hire them to do studio work because they know that they were looking for a certain sound and recognize talents of these musicians.
@johndough247

Sorry but a very rock n' roll Euro-centric view of "the world"...Paul is talented no question and I don't think there is a "best" (music isn't a competition, most of the world can't seem to realise that...), but as for level of difficulty guys like Larry Graham for example plays even more complex basslines (slapping no less) and sings effortlessly and was around during Paul's time. Look up "Hair" by Graham Central Station as proof, Modern bassists such as Thundercat, Esperanza Spalding and countless other jazz/soul/fusion bassists...Paul is mega popular because of Beatlemania, people believe he's the best because of that popularity and that's what everyone was told to believe. Even in Rock, there's a ton of bass players that play and sing more intricate basslines and melodies: Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Les Claypool and Sting to some extent. The world is a big place; I didn't include the wealth of bassist/singers from Africa, South America, Asia...

This film is also testimonial to the acoustics of the hippdrome. For years & years I never knew about _Rockshow_ the film. Never saw it repeated on HBO or released onto video throughout the 80's & 90's, but I had that _Wings Over America, Live_ double album. Can't tell you how many times I must've heard the live version on the radio, too. Absolutely magical! There's something about that recording that beautifully mirrors how well the sound of this performance fills the hippodrome. That's just as mystical to me as Paul's unprecidented demonstration for self-acconpaniment on electric bass, as revealed in this performance. That uniquely vivid quality in the live sound "image" of the magnetic tape recording (probably a 1" wide reel-to-reel, as opposed to a 1/2” one) blows me away everytime I hear this recording. It especially shows in Linda's synthesized string ensemble accompaniment in the background, & also in her lovely backing vocals. Without the benefit of ever seeing the film, you can practically feel the warmth & appreciation of that Seattle audience, & the gentle summer night air Something tells me Paul had a hand in speaker orientation, & in balancing the amplified instruments with the unamplified drums & brass section. But whomever his R&M (recording & mixing) man was at that time, he/ she deserves proper credit as well 💜🎸🎤
