Silver Age Comic Book Dry Cleaning Tutorial: Tales to Astonish #44 CPR Episode 2.
This video series will cover all aspects of Comic Book CPR: Crack, Press, and Resubmit. We will cover how to evaluate a comic book CPR candidate, crack open a slabbed comic book, clean and press the comic, and send if off to get re-graded to maximize value, whether you have a PGX, CBCS, or CGC slab.
Our CPR candidate is a nice Marvel Silver Age Key: Tales to Astonish #44 in PGX 6.5 with Off-White to White Pages. It’s the 1st appearance of the Winsome Wasp, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
In this video i demonstrate a thorough dry-cleaning of the front and back covers and evaluation for reglossing, which is a form of comic book restoration.

It’s a nice book, Dr Paul. It’s hard to tell if it’s been re-glossed based on your assessment and description. The gloss looks very consistent to me. And if it were done on this book, it’s done uniformly, which may be another clue. But why wouldn’t they clean it first? Or why not press out the defect after going through the trouble of re-glossing it? And doesn’t the reflows sometime leave behind a varnish-like smell? I trust in your assessment and I hope you’ll find a concrete answer with CGC.

All great questions Peter, and I agree with your assessment as well. Perhaps it was reglossed by a restorer prior to the days of ubiquitous pressing. If that is the case one concern I might have is color touch to go along with reglossing but I don’t see any evidence of it. We’ll see if the press reveals any new clues.

Ha! Totally true that the back add is where you will need to spend the most time kneading 😂 My reglossed copy (95% sure) DOES have a more yellowed white. The page doesn’t feel heavy either which is strange because I heard a heavier/stiffer page was a sign of the restoration. I agree, I think (80%) your copy was reglossed. It was really hard for me to find much info about reglossing as it seems to be one of the rarest types of restoration. I haven’t heard of a way to remove it that wouldn’t also affect the ink. I’m hoping the best for you!

I'm wondering if an aqueous bath would dull down that potential regloss enough to get a Blue Label.

@@Petemarie186 good idea. I’m not sure because I don’t know what restorers use as reglossing agents. I’d be more inclined to attempt removal if I was 100% certain this had been reglossed.

Hard to tell by the video but I think your right. The cover does look way too glossy, especially with the damage to it too.

Yeah sadly I think so…especially a pity because this book really didn’t need it! And if it had been reglossed, a shame PGX missed it. All that said, I’m not 100% certain it has been reglossed. If it has been, it’s the first book I’ve handled that has been reglossed.

dang it -u clean too, I must commend you brother; cuz I’m pretty green when it comes to the community (sold all my books in 99 & somewhat recently got back into the hobby) especially when it comes to cleaning, pressing & grading [im pretty horrible at it]. I can most certainly tell you’re pretty intricate with yours, & definitely gonna b able to use your vast experience to my benefit. I’m really not blowing smoke up your ass bro it’s just that there’s so many videos that say cleaning on ‘em & to call them half ass would be an insult to all those half ass mfr’s I knew in school I say all that to say #subscribed #thanx

@@DrPaulKosnik for sure brother, we’re eager beavers over here my son just bought a pressing machine, dry pads erasers, some shit called absorene, & a bunch of other stuff too i’ve got a short box of new 52 stuff so we’re gonna take 10 bucks each and see who does a better job I figure it’s a good way to practice since most people build up to the pressing machine you know I’m pretty sure you got to start weed lady racing whatever would have you all the metal plates and parchment paper and all that ghetto in order to get the books beautiful is an art form you clearly build up to try to explain this to him, but I can’t see actually tried to stop him either. Anyway thanks for what you do bud, i’m hoping to learn a lot. 💯☮️

How do you gloss a cover & how can it be removed? If it will help the grade.😊

Johnny, i don't have a lot of knowledge of reglossing...it is a restoration technique, not something conservators generally do. But essentially it's like putting a coat of shellac on the cover, similar to how an artist might do so to a painting. I'm not sure how it might be removed, or even if it can be! If this turns out to be reglossed, i'm going to have to get educated on it and see what my options are.
