Great episode, Nick. Thank you for showing the sponge that is used and where to get one. I will have to get one and try to clean some of my books as well.

it is one of the least evasive tool I have used to clean a book other than a soft tissue :)

Been watching your videos. Would be cool if every cleaning video had the book from a locked camera, so we could see BEFORE and AFTER back and forths
@curtiscamron5 жыл бұрын
That looks like it works pretty good, I usually use a kneaded eraser but this looks worth trying out.
@etanick15 жыл бұрын
it is less evasive and will take longer compared to the kneaded eraser but some books are too delicate for the knead eraser:)

What would you suggest to clean the front cover of malibu sun 13? More specifically the blue areas next to the staples...thanks
@roberthathaway64065 жыл бұрын
Great video. Sounds like if you want to get the back cover super clean, the eraser still is the best tool for dirty edges, but this sponge might be the best for the areas with printing. Have you tried using the sponge on a colored area of a front cover? Wondering if it picks up ink.
@etanick15 жыл бұрын
I haven't try on the front cover so I can't say..there is no need to risk it to be honest...I rarely clean the front cover unless it is a white cover.

Thank you Nick, great tip and video. So you will shave off the parts of the sponge that got dirty afterwards? As I was wondering how to clean the sponge of the accumulated dirt after use. Did you also pass over the colored area top left of the back over with it?
@etanick15 жыл бұрын
i passed over the entire back civer...i do plan to shave off the dirty parts

Great video! Thanks for the tip. Is the sponge washable and reusable?
@etanick1 Жыл бұрын
I have never tried to wash it but you can cut off the dirty surface if it is too dirty and keep using. I still have the same sponge after 5 years

Hi etanick what do you rest on when you clean books, I’ve been using backing boards but have noticed I’m getting some color rub on dark colours 🙁
@etanick13 жыл бұрын
yes ink transfer/rub off from the front cover can happen easily. Usually there are enough ink there that a little ink transfer isn't a big deal. If you handled a lot of books that weren't stored in bags or board, often you will see ink transfer on the back cover from the book below it. Not much you can do about it but try to be gentle when you clean the back cover...don't press down too hard, don't rotate the book too hard or too much or place a mylar below it, the smoothess surface you can rest a book.

I have used absorene the puddy, not the absorene cleaning pad so I can't say

I have a modern book from 2014 that has pencil marks do you think the sponge would remove marks without breaking/ rubbing color ?
@etanick13 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend using this on a modern book
@bummerc87523 жыл бұрын
@@etanick1 any recommendations?
@etanick13 жыл бұрын
if the area is the front cover or colored back cover...you really can't use much but soft tissue or absorene...can't use erasers or this sponge as it will remove colors and gloss. In the white area, the knead eraser type will work as in my first cleaning tutorial video.
@adamw.44583 жыл бұрын
Can you use this on front covers with a lot of color without removing the ink?
@etanick13 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend using it on the front covers

Maybe it might be easier to clean with if the sponge was cut in smaller chunks?
@etanick15 жыл бұрын
I thought about that but I figured for me I rather keep the big block. Use it until the one side is dirty as is and they shave/cut off the dirty areas to have a cleaner surface again. It works either way I am sure. I don't mind the big block because it gives me a bigger surface to hang on to the block.

I used the same one I bought over 3 years ago just today so on the grand scheme of thing, it is worth it.
