Living in Arizona Now

This is a look at Silver City, New Mexico. You all asked us to go out of the state and film some other states neighboring Arizona. So we decided to start with old Silver City the old stomping grounds of Billy the Kid. This is a Silver City downtown tour where we explore the city center as well as the creek that runs through town.
#SilverCity #NewMexico #TravelGuide
Living in Arizona is quite a unique experience because of the vastness that the state offers. From the Sonoran Desert in the south to the high country in the north all the way up towards the Four Corners east and the Grand Canyon in the west. Known as the Grand Canyon state, Arizona is diverse in many ways. The state tree is the Palo Verde, the state cactus is the Saguaro, the state bird is the Cactus wren. If you are thinking about moving to Arizona feel free to subscribe and check us out on our other channels.

One of the best snapshot videos of Silver City I've seen. Shows the character of the center of the town. Yeah, it does sorta have a Bisbee feel to it, but there's so much more to offer for outdoor people in the area, in all directions. They've tried to fast-lane the place for 50 years, but it remains comfortably small-town.

Thanks for featuring Silver City, New Mexico, just over the border from Arizona! More highlights of this area: Western New Mexico University campus and museum, dozens of tourist-friendly art museums, Gila Cliff Dwellings National monument, Trail of the Mountain Spirits scenic byway, miles of hiking and biking in the Gila National Forest north of town (lots of waterfalls in summer), annual Blues festival, Tour of the Gila bike race every May, several RV parks and hotels for overnight stays.

Being high desert and about the same elevation of Prescott and Payson, I considered moving to Silver city in 2007. Spent a week there. Loved it. However the wife did not like the shopping options. She said "It does not have a Kohls. So we moved to Prescott. I go to Silver City most years with my motorcycle and ride the incredible roads there and the incredible roads getting there. The town has a really good blues festival during memorial weekend. That is usually when I go there. It is considered Prescott's sister city. I try to stay at the Palace hotel if there is a room.

Wife & I are growing very fond of Silver City, its just under 3 hours drive from Sierra Vista, and I agree with you that it has a Bisbee vibe to it. Matter of fact, I have said to others that its Bisbee meets Nogales! Ah yes, Little Toad Creek Brewery, our favorite burger & brew place! We have spent many a pleasant hour in that place! Did you take notice of the theater, especially the lighting... real neon! We ran into a wonderful lady who is on the revitalizing committee, and she went into great detail about the full remodel & restoration of that theater, to include the neon fixtures!

I'm from Silver City. I grew up here. I love this place, I love the counter culture, artsy feel of it all, I love the culture, I love the people. Its just an amazing place to live. I do have one gripe with the place though, and I'm gonna lay that out here. Silver, like a few other mining towns in the southwest, Bisbee, I'm looking at you....has embraced the counter culture and art culture that came in when the mines started wheezing cause...you know, mining is a finite process...and good for it. Doing that kept it alive. Now tourism is a huge bit of the town's economy and its art shops are central to that. Again, good. But....but and here's the thing. Silver's downtown is promoted at the "Historic Art District". And excuse me, but as an historian I can assure you that there is no "historic art district" in Silver City, New Mexico. There IS an "historic district" which has been remarketed into an Art district. Now don't get me wrong..without those art shops the buildings in downtown would be abandoned, decaying wrecks. We've seen that happen in God knows how many places. But..art? Really? No. A century ago those constructions were home to myriad businesses...grocers for miners to buy their food, shops to purchase equipment, shops to repair said equipment, diners...but in abundance....saloons...and whorehouses. (Dens of ill repute for those on the far side of the "woke" angle.) Look...I'm fine...just fine with the art shops. But they are NOT in any way "historic". Miners in the 1880s were not perusing the downtown shops for a lovely piece to hang on their wall. They were looking for something to drink, and someone to....spend quality time with. I just wish, Silver would give a nod to that truth, and place in one of those downtown buildings needing something IN it...a recreation of an 1880s miners grocery..go in and buy a bag of flour and some hard candy and sarsparilla. See what they had to work with. And maybe...just maybe recreate a "den of ill repute" as was common in the area where miners could retire for some "sport with the ladies". You'd actually be presenting REAL history, and presenting a window back into time. If I were wealthy i'd insist on it and DO it. But I'm not. All I can do it gripe. And this is my gripe. A gripe towards a town I'm thoroughly in love with...so its not got a lot of teeth. :)
@paulbaker3144
@paulbaker3144 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, horse poop on the streets and pigs and dogs running loose sounds accurate also …….hardy harhar. You make a good gripe about there probably being little art there historically. I’m wondering about the 20 year drought. Are any towns running dry? People cannot drink art. Silver City resembles but has a advantage over other struggling towns like Sedro Woolley, WA, near where I lived. We all drive right past Sedro because the major shopping centers in Burlington and Mount Vernon were only 6 miles further. So Sedro struggles on and on with businesses going under after a few years of little business. If Grant County is smart they will never allow a competing shopping area to be developed.

Nice to vary yourself from AZ. Silver City seems pretty spread out for a town of 10K. I recall about 20 years ago a wave of Californians migrated there to escape that state and drove up home prices. Now, web search says Median home price is in the $200K range plus or minus. A lot of those cheaper houses may be quite old, however. Newer construction may be higher. I suggest Las Cruces, Las Vegas (NM), Carlsbad and Taos as places to put on your channel.

I lived in Silver City about 25 years ago when my parents retired there. While I was there p, (and since then when I've visited), the "downtown" was shuttered. Most if the stores were closed. If what you need isn't at Wal-mart or Amazon, you do without. Don't forget the drugs and alcohol. Don't forget the high unemployed rate. Plus the high single parent households. Most of the residents are on some sort of government aide. It's a nice place to visit..... but I wouldn't wan5 to ever live there again.

Been there, but not recently. I remember the great Mexican food, and arty shops. I seem to remember there is a lot of Mormons living there, or Jehova's Witnesses, can't remember which.
