i really love this because it's one of the most sincere later performances of the song. i think because a) he was obvously having "issues" that day and b) it still is a deeply personal song and playing it for 20 strangers can be more uncomfortable than for, say, a stadium. the vocals were so real and candid. much respect.

I don't want to hear anyone say a goddamn thing about Daniel's voice lacking in the later Silverchair years. if nothing else, this is proof.
@eldesdichado1480
@eldesdichado1480 7 жыл бұрын
If the assertion that Daniel Johns lost some of his voice over the years was true, it would be no sin or demerit. Losing a little of the voice over the years is something very common in the world of rock, the unruly lifestyle adopted by many vocalists and the marathon of shows that the profession demands of them. What I've come to realize by listening to and watching several live concert videos is that the former Silverchair vocalist gained more vocal reach, something quite rare to happen in this musical universe.

He absolutely lost some of it. He still sounds good, but he was a goddamn powerhouse back then, nobody sang like him. There’s a reason when they came back myself and many other people thought Silverchair had gotten a new singer altogether. He looks and sounds very different. There’s one note he hits in the first verse that’s close, but definitely not what it used to be.

Daniel is a perfectionist. Sometimes, his voice and variations of the original record, his guitar playing sound more raw, beautiful and better than the recorded cd version. This track is one of those very rare, that makes you think that no one can top that, not even Daniel himself. Then comes Daniel and says, "Hold my surfing board for a while, brb."

He is not 20 anymore. The artist has the right to change the style. Maybe he got tired of heavy distortion guitars, screaming vocals all the time. I do not believe he's doing it for the money. Because...otherwise, he does not change the style. He still playing the same music / style. He has guts to chance the style.

"I loved Silverchair then and I love them now... but Paul Mac is not Silverchair. Talk about a free ride. Because I hold Mac personably responsible for shifting Silverchair's music in the direction it went. If you wan't to add strings and piano... thats fine, but ever since Johns started colaborating with Mac... they've been writing music that... is interesting, but sounds like an Umpa Lumpa bit from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." I totally agree with you. Silverchair won their fans with songs about social injustice and opression, songs with dark riffs based on punk/grunge/metal. But if you listen the very first album (the 4 songs of Tomorrow album) and compare with the last one (Young modern), you can't recognize them as the same band. The last one sounds like a gay disco party. There's nothing wrong with a gay disco party, but it's not suppose to be the very same audience of post-grunge/metal songs. It's possible that Paul Mac was not responsible for this, it's possible that they just won't to sing the same things over and over again, it's possible that Daniel Johns has not depressed anymore and this reflects on their songs (dammit anti-depression drugs), but I will blame Paul Mac too. At very least he has some role on this tragic change.
@luixoluixo
@luixoluixo 10 жыл бұрын
I believe that Daniel Johns and Paul Mac found each other because they were searching for, somehow, the same sound. Silverchair never repeated itself, to expect them to sound the same from Frogstomp to Freakshow is already a mistake, there you could already listen to them letting the rock grunge go on "Petrol and Chlorine". Well, the history you should know, but this is the thing I love the most about Silverchair, is always different from itself. In Dissociatives was, really, a dissociation from the rock thing, the EP before that was even baptized "I can't believe it's not rock". I wouldn't blame Paul Mac, or Daniel Johns, nor nobody. I think it was the will of making new music that brought Silverchair to what it became.
