Looking at "Ana's Song" a deeply personal song written by Daniel Johns from Silverchairs 3rd studio album Neon Ballroom. In this video i go in-depth on the lyrics and the music behind this Silverchair song. I go into the origins of how the song was created to give you a new look at this Silverchair classic. This video also contains an excerpt of my cover version of 'Ana's Song' being played in the background.

They used to play this song constantly and I couldn’t understand how ppl could listen to it bc it always was too creepy for me. You could hear his real sadness and turmoil in his lyrics and through his voice. I’m just glad he was able to overcome this disease, God bless.

They fell under that " Nirvana Knockoff's" cateGory. I completely aGree with you , and believe that had they come out around the same time as Nirvana , it would be an entirely different outcome.

@@cwork2250Unfortunately the record company released Abuse Me in the United States as their first single off their second album. Instead of releasing Freak first like they did everywhere else. Abuse me sounded kinda gay and not relatable for most young people. Imagine if Nirvana had released Polly instead of Smell Like Teen Spirit as their first single off their second album. There’s no way Nirvana would have exploded the way it did.

This song was how I discovered them, while I was recovering from my own ED. They quickly became my favorite band, and Neon Ballroom is my favorite album of all time. It's the vulnerability, and raw emotional honesty for me. 😭🙌🏻🔥❤🎶

7:14 Daniel's actually pushing his anorexia self in the wheel chair to show him his passion of performing. As he walks a way, he looks back at his anorexia.... that was and is very powerful. the entire song and video is powerful.

I had an eating disorder, not anirexia, and I get it. The hardest part is other people not understanding or them not trying to understand what's happening on the inside. I'm really glad Danny was able to move beyond it.

I had the opposite, I barely remember anything from that time as it was such a horrible time. But I still kind of miss it. I miss that place where you know everything's in front of you. Now it's the opposite, I have nothing more to look forward to. I got sick 2 years back and I lost myself, I had to give up my hobbies and have no one to talk to because healthy people have no idea what it's like not knowing if you're going to be around for long, I wish I could be as ignorant honestly.

Sad that SilverChair will likely never reunite which is a real damn shame cause they are by far my favorite band. I’ve listened to them since I was a kid in 95. And now I’m 37 and STILL have all their albums in playlist. You just don’t find bands like this one anymore.

I grew up loving Silverchair and although I was only 17- I knew of Dan's open battle with anorexia and I went out of my way to follow his journey. This song sat with me after reading the lyrics off of the actual book the album came with ( something kids today won't ever understand) ...and of course, I knew " Ana " = Anorexia...but "Imagine pageant In my head, the flesh seems thicker Sandpaper tears corrode the film"....& " the lyrics " Please die Ana For as long as you're here we're not, You make the sound of laughter; sharpened nails seem softer And I need you now somehow" I gathered these words as a description of him punishing himself...struggling with guilt & feeling like he deserved the situation that could've been the death of him...I always thought that maybe this started wayyy back- & it was about the triple homicide back around 95 I believe? The teenage boy murdered his family and blamed the band & their song " Israel's son". Seeing as they weren't allowed to reference this in the public eye - im sure it ate away at the band, especially Daniel. I gathered it caused his depression to run so deep he developed anorexia. However: he never directly says that the incident had anything to do with him writing this song but I felt in my very personal and NONPROFESSIONAL opinion; that he was speaking of the angst and inner turmoil of being a teenager and trying to overcome whatever guilt he experienced back then having written those lyrics only for a younger kid to misinterpret their meaning and use that as his excuse to do the heinous shit he did - this is Absolutely...💯 NOT the responsibility & def NOT the fault of Silverchair &/or Daniel or his genius talent for writing. This man is a creative genius & has been probably well before 14 years old but trying to imagine the weight on his shoulders at that young age... it's completely heartbreaking. I gathered mounding tribulations that led to his battle with an eating disorder. Daniel gained so much of my respect by going public with his issues. He's always been an admirable character & I love that his second language is sarcasm, he's never compromised his integrity, from a kid to this very day! Over the years I've continued to check in on his work & follow Dan's various projects...the man is the very definition of vocal evolution - a true full-on entertainer & visionary.

I don’t get how he could have goten beaten up during silverchair without it being obvious e.g. bruises in photos/interviews and the media not being aware of it. And surely would have a body guard if that was happening. I don’t see why he would make it up but it doesn’t seem to make sense. He was on tour or practicing with Ben and Chris or writing songs most of the time and at school some of the time.

One of my favourite albums. I don't doubt he was ill but it was very fashionable amongst the grunge crowds to be a victim. Something I myself internalised and became ill myself (and am to this day). I love grunge but I think it has made me incredibly nihilistic and depressed. Still I blast it out just about every single day 😜

I internalize everything. But no music really sets that off. I had to have it in me to begin with. Then I end internalizing more. Bc y not. It's a part of me anyways... but I always liked year 2000, first. It triggered some stuff then I found this, later. I dont think I immediately knew what he meant tho. Bc my names Ann. & ppl will still make that into their own versions, some how. Ana, Annie, Annabelle, u mean w an I, e? ,,, dude idk. Ppl make sh more complicated than not. Got so used to being called Annie early on, I ended up preferring that. It's actually few times ppl really call me Ann. But it did throw me off some. I just like the plz di Ana part bc you're aware it's not right. But at times, u just can't help it... not bc im actually suicidal. Sometimes I speak in 3rd person (wever the term) bc thats my attempt at not wearing my heart on my sleeve, & im being lazy.

50 KG. Ah, sure, that's 50 KG/D.Johns x 2.2 lbs/kg = (2x50)+50x0.2 So 50/5 as 1/0.2 =5 So 110 llbs if 14 llbs /stone. And 140 llbs is 10 stone. 50kg is going to be about 8 stone. Because 140-110 = 30 llbs about 2 stones. So 10-2=8 stones. So, I wonder what his height was at that stage in his life, where. He might have been growing. But, hopefully. He, had enough money to afford more than a couple of bits of fruit each day. I heard about, a few 50 with anorexia, actually and, that anorexia nervosa can be a killer, like starvation.

So what you’re 50kgs? Exactly, so fucking what. Every body is different dip shit. A healthy 50kg on one body may be a deadly 50kg on another body. Don’t trivialise the struggles of another just because you perceive it as normal.

Eating disorders aren’t JUST about weight. A person can be a healthy weight and have an eating disorder. It’s just like Any mental disorder. Things might seemingly be fine from the outside, but no good on the inside. everybody’s bodies are different. And 50 kg is thin nonetheless. You can tell he wasn’t healthy in the late 90s.
@ghostgirl1940

that’s not how eating disorders work, it’s not about weight at all. i dealt with this last year, i would skip every meal i could and exercise almost 2 hours a day everyday, but there was no apparent weight loss. i felt dizzy and unwell all the time and just like total shit mentally but no one noticed because i didn’t look “thin enough” to have a problem. i still looked fat but that doesn’t mean i wasn’t struggling.
@areamusicale
@areamusicale 3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostgirl1940 I probably exercise more than you (and anyone else who repeat that same narrative). Look, there is nothing to be offended or being jealous from my comment. The relation between weight and height in my body is perfectly fine. I won't preach you my "exercise", but if you drive maybe consider cycling when possible and avoid meat as much as you can. Do not attempt to get to a goal weight or form, in fact avoid the mirror and do not compare yourself to anyone else. I weight 50Kg because that's (probably) the best fit for my body; it is just a number and should not be compared to other numbers. I telling you this in good faith.

Learn to have some empathy and compassion. Misery and struggles are a part of life. Why be fake and pretend it doesn't exist when you can use it and overcoming it to help others in a positive way and to also help others not feel alone who are in the same battle? It takes real courage to do that especially someone like Daniel who was opening up to the whole damn world about it. I bet you wouldn't do that. You'd see that as weak huh? Men are not 'maning up' by pretending like they have no emotions, no real life issues and most of all.... No empathy.
