Welcome to part 2 of my sim racing setup guide. This video is all about tyres, and how compound, pressure and temperature are probably the most important part of a cars setup. This series of videos is intended to give beginners an overview of how to set up a car in any of the modern racing sims.
Throughout all 12 videos, I have been describing in detail the various aspects of car setup and how to bring all of them together to build a car setup.
The first 10 videos explain the ins and outs of each setup area, trying to explain the how and the why. Then, video 11 starts to bring everything together and talk through the process of building a setup. Finally, I’ve included video 12 as a case study of an Assetto Corsa setup that I created for the Audi R8 GT3.

@@realtimeinc2159 So uhhh... PURELY out of curiosity -- and not a desire to take such valuables for myself -- where is this video series kept? Something worth THAT much is surely under heavy guard, right? And what kind of guard, exactly? Armed, I'm sure, but with what? And how many? You wouldn't happen to know what time the shifts change, eh? As I mentioned, this is born solely from my curious nature. Nothing nefarious going on here... honest =-j

Found this coming back to Assetto Corsa. Went from a 1:49:291 to a 1:44.829 at Imola. This whole series deserves more attention by Sim Community. It’s pure gold

Think this is one of the simplest ways to shave a tenth or two off my current times as I'm only just about to start looking at set-ups. Thanks for the basic style of these videos Chris, they're definitely useful to those of us who haven't been racing that long.

My experience on the Nordschleife. Lap 1: Tyres are warm from the tyre warmers. Decent lap. Lap 2: Tyres are stone cold and I spin out in the section after the carousel. Rinse and repeat. Hopefully this helps!

This is the one setup that may be simple but constantly overlooked. One more thing to consider is the circuit layout; like Road Atlanta will punish your left tires a lot more than the right ones while Suzuka and Spa are pretty much balanced.

Coming back at this series regularly helps to increase knowledge every time. You succeed in making videos that let the beginner get a good taste of what's happening, while providing enough details for a 2nd, 3rd and even 4th viewing. Cheers !

Rehooja I just tested this app and didn’t benefit from having the exact tire pressure I need. The tires are constantly cold in this game, if they’re warm I go faster. For some reason tires won’t even warm up in this game like the GT4 and GT3RS.

Chris at 2:19 you mentioned that 'lower pressure generate more heat', but in other guides or for example in the F1 2020 game it notes 'increased tyre pressures contributes to higher temperatures'. For me this sounds contradicting. Or does it solely means that lower pressure get hotter quicker, but higher pressure will reach a higher temperature in the end? But that doesn't match with your flowchart again. I'm a bit lost on this point. Of course I can go out and try for myself, but would love to hear your response. (Note: I'm more of a simcade racer, but want to improve my basic setup knowledge.)

No the other guides are correct, lower pressures = lower temp and take longer to get up to operating temp,oppisite for higher pressures. on a hot track you lower the pressure, and raise them for cold track temps- a higher pressure switches tyre on quicker but it will also drop off quicker,lower pressure takes longer to switch the tyre on but it will take longer to drop off. this is from over 30 years real world experience and every sim title i,ve played has been just like real world. now if you are experiencing the oppisste there is something fundamently wrong with your car setup

Good stuff Chris. Really looking forward to all the guides! Just a note here. The music is just a bit too loud in the intro and outro sections of the video. You could lower it a bit and then do a second fade in/out as you stop speaking.

Thanks dude. It's Project Cars 2, and the Spirit of Le Mans pack. The 908LH is one of my all time favourites, but I must say the PC2 version feels a bit tame to me.

Awesome videos mate! I love them so far. I have a question, is it recommended to change the pressure between the left front tyre and the right front tyre, or left rear and right rear? like running 15 psi LF and 16 PSI RF. Or do you only change the pressure between both front tyres and both rear tyres? Because some tracks put a lot of tempreature on only one side of the car, leaving the other side with a wrong pressure on the tyres. Hope I was clear! Keep the videos coming, and a big thank you, you're very good at this!

Paraphrasing, Chris said, "As sim racers we have data...." 'Racers was pronounced as ray-suhs, and data as day-ter (rather than 'ray-ser' and 'day-tuh'). lol I was immediately reminded of how people around where I live say 'wash' and 'Wartburg (yes, it's a real place near here... so is Big Lick).' 'Warsh' and 'Wot-burg' is how they say it -- adding an 'r' where it doesn't belong, and removing the one that does! Ha! Accents are funny.

When talking about temps, you said "other setup changes" what would those be? My pressures are in the ideal range, but my right rear temp is too low and I get graining. This is with pressure at the lowest point within the operating window.

Can anyone explain this, In the F1 games it says lower tyre pressures lead to lower temperatures but in AC it says the opposite (lower pressures lead to higher temperatures) which one is accurate? is it dependant on car? such as an F1 car vs a GT car?

Hi Chris I tried amg gt3 on Monza optimal condition no wind...with default setup and even after 8 lap i cant have hot tyre what is the problem crew chief said cold tyre around I have 27psi on fourth medium tyre set Kunos app tyre temp always blue If you can help me ...thxs

Tyre-pressures are so annoying and time-consuming, especially in AC where you need two setups for soft and medium slicks, i get why Raceroom doesn't bother with this and it just can get exploited as well. The Lotus Exos on Paul Ricard for example is like four seconds faster if you increase the pressure for less rolling resistance and just delivers this WTF-moments when others are a lot faster than you, just for not knowing the trick. Four clicks more PSI was faster on the straight than four clicks less rear downforce and i doubt this works in the real car at all. Tyre-temps are even more crazy in AC and seems that ACC 0.2 is reducing the effect a lot like pCars 1 did with pCars 2 as well. Better simple and too easy than complex and unrealistic.

Hey Leynad - for what it's worth I agree. AC does have some weird exploits when it comes to setups, particularly like you say, with crazy low downforce. I've not spent a huge amount of time playing with the setups on ACC since it's still on a pretty steep development curve & I expect a lot will change still - but from what I've read, it doees seem like a lot of the unrealistic "tricks" you could use in AC don't carry over to the new title... so that's a step in the right direction.

@@ChrisHaye I hated 0,1, but 0,2 feels damn good:) Tyre-pressure is limited and you can only lower 1 psi front, 0,2 psi rear from default, so not much to gain in this regards. Running full downforce with 0,1 was an exploit for 1:52 times, but this doesn't work anymore as well.

If I’m running at something like the Daytona road course or Indy road course, one side will heat up more stay hot and at a greater pressure through the road course sections. Would it be a good idea to alter the starting pressures so that the hot pressures are the same left to right over a run?

On ovals I usually raise the right side pressure to cool them down, because the left tires kinda just sit there (obviously exaggerating), and can be lower, and use this on tracks like the RB ring, where you can just push them through

It could be more twitchy, but is affected by understeer and oversteer more often

Haha - it's a bit scary when I think back to some of the god-awful tyre choices I made on my first car(s). I doubt my old Nova even left the factory with 4 identical tyres on it! ;)
