Interesting video. Malay language was used as lingua franca as communication bridge during Malacca Sultanate much influenced by Portuguese, Dutch, English and people around the world. Language keep us closer.

No, before Malacca Sultanate era... Srivijaya Kingdoms was the first period of Malay Language that spread being of lingua franca... In any case, Malacca Sultanate itself was built by a person from Srivijaya Kingdoms... You just bring "Malacca Sultanate" word but you forget the Srivijaya Kingdoms😂 Because you are already know if you say "Srivijaya" it close to Sumatera not Malay Peninsula, so you just say "Malacca Sultanate" instead of promoting Malay Peninsula

It was fun, both were able to say "saya" and "Melayu", both got it wrong for "bercakap" and ^bahasa". Bruno's pronunciation of "bahasa" is wrong but much better and closer than you aunt's pronuntiation.

Portuguese stayed in Melaka from 1511 to 1640. That s 129 years of assimilation with the local malay people.

Many of the Malay words are also from Indian and Chinese - would definitely annoy a bigoted nationalist to ever want to admit that.

Soldadu may be the old word used in Malay but among our people (the Dayak (Iban) of Sarawak), we still use the word "sedadu"... which is close enough.

The current word in vogue is "askar" which is derived from the Arabic meaning an army or a collective of soldadu. "Askar" evolved in the Malay language to mean an individual soldier today. The term for an army was replaced by "tentera" instead. "Sedadu" as used in Sarawak in Malaysia is actually identical to the Indonesian word "serdadu" which was derived from the Portuguese "soldado". People forget that the Portuguese were in Indonesia too, & far longer at that!

Those of poetic or linguistic people still know soldadu as soldier. It's really poetic to use soldadu in Malay poem.

I've learned a little bit of Brazilian Portuguese, and when I found out similarities like bola and natal it was very surprising but at the same time makes sense because of the history Malaysia had with Portugal. hope more ties will be made between the 2 countries 😄😄.

When I was in Japan, my Brazilian classmates were GROSSYLY surprised that I understand their language and sang old Portuguese songs. When I sang the "Burung Kakak Tua" (Cacatoa bird) song every Brazilian jumped on their feet, excited.

@@absolute_abundance Same with Spanish, lots taken from Arabic. Eg camisa/khamis; sabo/sabun; cama/qamar. They are not having the things but Arab people brought it to them. Nothing to be ashamed of that. In fact, English are made up of so many "borrowed" languages eg German, French and Spanish.

I believe some people in Kelantan nearest the Thailand boarder still use the word soldadu. Thai people near the boarder also use the same word refer to cops

@Pekasam Laksa sanskrit origated from South Asia and Mrs Zaharah claims have been claimed has false and wrong btw. Malay genes are not the 2nd oldest in the world. Check the facts. Malay is fairly a new language and it borrowed many elements from other languages

@@AlphaCenturi16 We all know that language evolves almost every day. Old words are sometimes modified and new words keep coming. The fact is that every race/ethnic group has its own original language no matter how little they were. As civilisation/modernisation expanded, so is languages. To say that Malay is a fairly new language is not true at all. So is English language. They borrowed many many many words from all over. Latin.. Greek.. whatever. Languages evolve.. period.

We understand both soldadu and askar. Askar is used but we used soldadu if we want more fancy, like in writing. Askar is from arabic word.

Woww How I love to know that many of Malay words (Bahasa Malaysia) originated from various influences of many countries due to the colonisations. Just an added info, 'pena' is a old word for 'pen'. 'Pena' is mostly used in literary text nowadays.

@@absolute_abundance Ya, mungkin dahulunya memang benar, tetapi tidak dinafikan dalam tempoh beratus tahun evolusi, bahasa Melayu/Indonesia berkembang menjadi bahasa yg indah dan pelbagai. Cuma kesamaan bahasa antara benua itu juga tidak dapat dielakkan. Malah Bahasa Inggeris juga banyak meminjam bahasa dari Perancis (French) dan Jerman (Deutch) dan berevolusi sebagai bahasa mereka (English) itu sendiri. Ya.. kita hanya perlu bangga dengan keindahan bahasa ibunda kita dan mempertuturkannya seindah mungkin

@@Miqael_Ozairy I got what you mean, when Tanah Melayu spoke 'Bahasa Melayu'. But it has always been Bahasa Malaysia, after Tanah Melayu was changed to Malaysia. Then for a while, it was Bahasa Melayu, with the new set of 'previous' Ministers, it was changed to Bahasa Melayu, but now, it has been changed back to Bahasa Malaysia like it was before. If we want to diacuss more the origin of Bahasa Malaysia, mmmm leave it to historians to do their research. Additional infor, even the Philippines language do have its similiarity with other

In Melaka(state in Malaysia), there is Portuguese Village(Kampung in Malay) or St. John Village(Kampung), which serves as a home for the KRiSTANG people (mixed Portuguese & Malay Heritage)....

The impact of Portuguese colonialism in Southeast Asia back then, and the people adopted some words from Portuguese like Jendela (window), Garfu (forks) and some others. Bahasa being used in several countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and several Southeast countries now. Soldadu might be used by Melayu Indonesian, but Melayu Malaysian are using word Askar for army. Bahasa in Indonesia and Malaysia is similar but some words are using for different meaning. Like PERCUMA, means wasteful in Indonesia, but Malaysian use by the meaning of (free).

soldado is not a regular old Malay word, we used "perajurit" which means the same thing but influenced by sanskrit i think.

9:12 , yeah it's not commonly used anymore, but the word are still in our Malay dictionary (serdadu) which is anggota tentera or askar (soldier)

Historical Malay International trading hub centre has much effecting a lot of foreign loanwords, from Chinese, Indian (Sanskrit, Tamil), Arab, Persians, and also from colonisation; Portuguese, Dutch, English.. but Austronesians original words are still in major 👍🏼

Soldadu is a lending word from Portuguese, yet Askar is a lending word from Arabic 'askari' or from Persia 'lashkar'.

Portugese conquering Malacca in 1511 and held it as their trading post for 130 years. So its not surprise if some of their words were adapted into malay vocabulary.
