I was a couple years younger than Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon when this song came out. When I heard the line how strange it is to be 70 it struck me as to what a heavy line This is for guys in their 20s. I've listened to the song so many times over the years one of my favorite but now that I'm in my 70s the line does have a personal note about it. I have lost my son and my wife 15 months apart both to cancer . So many of my friends have passed on also. The last of my in-laws, my brother-in-law passed away yesterday. Mother-in-law, father-in-law, and five brother and sister-in-laws have passed away also. The last of my wife's family which was always my family too. How strange it is to be seventy . All my tomorrow's are gone.

I'm a fair bit younger than yourself, but it hurts like hell to lose loved ones, doesn't it - that's why I'm here, again, revisiting this song... just found out this past weekend I lost two more friends, one real important to me, like a little brother really... after I lost so many people already, including the girl I was to marry, who passed away aged just 35, but I comfort myself with the belief that I'll see them all again one day. I'm sure your son and your wife and the rest will be patiently waiting for you. Till then we can listen to great music like this and remember the good times. Take care my friend.

I’ll be 67 in a couple of months. I used to think about my two oldest friends whenever I’d listen to this song, and could picture myself with one or the other of the two of them on that park bench, in our overcoats reminiscing about the fifty years past. They’re both gone now, and the line that still makes me weep for them remains, “Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you.” How could I have seen how those words would have come to fruition when we were listening to this at the tender age of 15? Kevin and Marc, I miss you both more than you could ever know, my Brothers. Rest Easy.

“silently sharing the same FEAR...” I used to sing this song to my two boys (older dogs) when I wanted to appreciate their short time on earth, but I was silently fearing their mortality, that one fear S&G sing about. I saw them as two older men, as old friends, growing up and older together. sadly, they are now both gone and I listen to this beautiful version and remember that one fear, but mostly the good memories I had with them...I miss them terribly. “preserve your memories, there all that’s left you”

This song hits me very hard. I'm 66 and have an "old friend" who was recently diagnosed with nodules in his brain. The lines "Time it was and what a time it was--a time of innocence, a time of confidences. Long ago it must be--I have a photograph. Preserve your memories--they"re all that's left you." are so appropriate and so gut-wrenching. I've been a fan since around 1966. None of us know how much time we've got, so make the most of it.

Oh my god, why does people have this extraordinary need to distinguish themselves from their peers?
@michaelsaxonson2517 жыл бұрын
Andrea Caycho Because their peers are highly dense and uncultured, so they don't want to be perceived as part of that group. Think about it, if you looked exactly like the members a group of cannibals, but you had the good sense not to eat people, wouldn't you want to let people know you aren't part of the cannibal group?
@Helveticaschannel7 жыл бұрын
But of course, what you sense as "extremely uncultured" is only a perception based on a romanticized idea of what living in the 60s or 70s was. The "good sense" or good taste that that you recall now, probably was given to another cultural objects then. So more than making a real impression of the cultural object, they project their identity based on them, making this persons no different of the people they criticize so much. That's why comments like, "im 10 and im listening to this" are extremely annoying, and I can't understand them. What do they want, an award or something?

I would listen to this over and over, I also was 16. Now I think if it every time I am at a park with an old friend. I can't believe it.

How terribly strange to 70...name a better duo than these two...they have had their differences over the years but what amazing artists...

Now at 72, still sharing their music with us. Artists they continue to be.

That's the best and most affecting line of the whole song "Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly, how terribly strange to be 70"

I'm 31 and I love this song. They don't make music like this anymore. It's all about nudity and tweaking now a day!

+Piña ColAda He's talking about what's mainstream, what people hear in general. Show me a mainstream song nowadays that is remotely comparable to this.
