The man who had the unmitigated temerity to call a solo album sans Paul Simon, "Breakaway". Here he prosaically blathers incessantly in the ear of some unfortunate studio engineer who had the presence of mind to keep and share the recording.

Oh, this is torture. I have produced many vocalists, and I’ve never had to deal with an artist like this. I feel really bad for that producer. I’ve seen Garfunkel interviewed on camera, and he always seems pretty pompous. That being said, he has a glorious voice, and it was a thrill to be in the audience for Simon and Garfunkel’s 2003 reunion tour.

@@jessthehorse As a matter of fact, I make my living in the industry, partly as an engineer/producer. You're right, some engineers hate this kind of thing but they're paid to serve the artist, not the other way around. I suggest you take it down a little. Pretty over the top.

I dunno. This studio banter is probably taken out of context, but neither Art Garfunkel nor Paul Simon could've been easy to work with in the studio. Yikes, we know what happened with them together...pure magic. But the arguements and bitterness to get to it? We're lucky we just listened to the final product.

It's pretty clear that Paul Simon was "the brains of the outfit". Although Art might have gotten production credit I guarantee you he did not produce those recordings on his own NOR did he write anything worth a shit. What he did do was sit here like a self important narcissist adoring the sound of his voice and babbling like a fool. You have no basis to say the producer was overproducing. At the end of the day he was a glorified background singer. @@jukeboxcowboy
@jukeboxcowboy

@@jessthehorse 🤠 The basis is on the tape: The producer is literally trying to get a part that he considers a flub, re-recorded, and Garfunkel is saying no, he prefers the excitement of "the save". It's a creative difference, but absolutely valid: Feel vs perfection. Re: Simon and Garfunkel, I reckon it took some brains to write those harmonies, which Garfunkel did almost exclusively, and became their signature sound.

You seem to have missed the point or any point. I was a recording musician by career until my retirement and this is not about "grinding an axe" but rather demonstrating what professional musicians and recording techs endure at the hands of narcissistic artists who take themselves way too seriously. This makes studio players laugh out loud at the pomposity.
@bookoflists

@@jessthehorse Nonetheless, this features cherry picked snippets, taken from one context (studio) and put in another (internet). I agree that Garfunkle - the "narcissistic artist" - comes across as pompous. But why go out of your way to show it?
@jessthehorse
@jessthehorse Жыл бұрын
@@bookoflists - No, not really. There is enough stream of consciousness that it gets the message across to anyone who has ever sat in the booth listening to some pretentious self important "ar-TIST" blather. You may be overthinking this. It does not make him a bad person or a candidate for an indictment ... just a laugh or two from biz insiders.
@bookoflists
@bookoflists Жыл бұрын
@@jessthehorse Maybe I came on a bit strong. "thinking too much" is a pretty persuasive line on me. But after reading the caption below the video I return to my original point. I am not a fan of Garfunkle, the pomposity is cringey. However, it is less than 6 minutes presumably cut from hours of recording of what is more or less a "private" recording session. Maybe the engineer felt insulted through their relationship and that partly explains it.
@jessthehorse
@jessthehorse Жыл бұрын
@@bookoflists - I have no idea and no way of knowing BUT some engineer or producer, I know not who, felt this routine was stereotypical enough to make good inside baseball. Art is a very wealthy man and I do not feel sorry for him. When you are in the public eye you have to BE careful about what you say and where you say it no less when you are being recorded. I DID NOT edit this clip. I have uploaded it in its entirety just as it was posted elsewhere before me. I wish I had the same financial concerns as Art Garfunkel so in the real world he can either take a little ribbing or not but its simply not a priority nor am I the least bit self conscious about sharing this material after a lifetime of listening to similar bullshit from artists in studios.
