Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. Paul Simon's songwriting was masterful and Art Garfunkel's voice was angelic. It is perfect. There are very few perfect songs in the world and it is sheer joy to discover one and watch others discover it.

From American Songwriter: "Listening to the southern gospel group Swan Silvertones’ 1959 song “Oh Mary Don’t You Weep,” one particular line rang out to Simon,- I’ll be your bridge over deep water / If you trust in my name-which helped Simon finish “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and its more gospel elements."

Can you imagine how we reacted when he heard it when it was first released ? Simon and Garfunkel already had an impressive catalog of originals before this came . Yet Paul took it to a new level when he wrote this and although Paul’s voice is good he knew to let Art do the lead .

I love this reaction. May your beloved father rest in peace. My personal interpretation of the song is this. The Holy Spirit is comforting an elderly gray-haired homeless lady on the street who is dying (the silver girl). He tells her that her time has come to shine (fly to Heaven), and that He's sailing right behind (He'll meet her there).

Every now and then, I'll go on a binge and see how young people like you react to what is to you an old song. When this came out there was much trouble in America, race riots, anti-war protests on campuses (I was at the U of Oregon when the students took over the campus), drugs and everyone dealt with some personal stress or had no heart. This was one of the songs which gave us peace and hope. Simon and Garfunkel were high school friends who made a pop song under the name "Tom and Jerry." It was a cute teeney bopper song but it gave them the money to go to an expensive college to further study music. They had several hits but this one was their master piece. They broke up and Garfunkel actually stared in a movie called "Catch 22" which he had gotten good reviews. Paul Simon wrote lyrics as well as Bob Dylan. I know Dylan respected him because they did a duet with him on "Sounds of Silence." Simon later did some respectful albums on his own. When they were at their height, every song on an album was worth listening to even if it wasn't you type of music. They were that great.

@@uwasombatessy9511 What you should check out some day is Paul Simon's "Rhythm of Saints." None of the songs were a singles hit but the album was nominated for a Grammy and was commercially successful. All the songs have either a Caribbean or African rhythms and drums. Paul Simon's songs always tell a story, so they are about people he met. I think Paul is trying to get Americans to appreciate Black culture. It came out in 1990, which because of work, I am ignorant of much of the 1990's music, so it is all new to me.

Personally, I always saw the "bridge over troubled waters", as Jesus. Paul Simon said the song came to him all at once and I know how God will cause inspiration to come just that way. I like you and your genuine reaction. I am sorry about your beloved Dad. I lost my Dad on the 11th April 1971 so in a few days' time it will be 50 years since he left us and on 25th May this year it will be 25 years since my Darling Mum joined him in Heaven. Good Luck...

They have crazy harmonies that take this song to a new level.4th Impact auditioned for X Factor Uk in 2015 and their audition video has more than 175 million views .
