So sad to lose one of the greatest most underrated and talented artists in my opinion . And this.......this version is my all-time favorite song.....ever. strings are so incredibly rich and layered precisely. The brass, the choir... a perfect blending of music, instruments and people never to be matched again. The talent and the style and sound will never be seen again. I got carried away here. I didn't mean to ramble on, but this is what this song does to me. It takes me to a simpler time when worries were few and and times were relevant, people were free and life was full. I am sorry, not everyone got to experience this Era now forever gone........

What the heck is a "whiskey tenor"? 🤔
@Scottie_S
@Scottie_S Жыл бұрын
@@Vinterfrid It's a tenor range that has a raspy or gutteral sound to voice without the purity, but still hitting the notes with another quality. There are a lot of rock voices that are 'whiskey tenors'. Not just male, but female singers. When I was singing in bands in the 70's, I was given that name and wasn't sure if it was a compliment or an insult. I learned alter that it was complimentary.

Gary Brooker is the lead singer and those of us who heard this song for the first time in the 60s are astounded by the fact that his voice sounds as great or perhaps even better, seasoned by age and experience than it did more than 50 years ago. Beautiful performance of a wonderful classic, and such a warm and enthusiastic reaction! Thanks, RR!

Well said, I have listened to the '67 original thousands of times in my 53 years on this little dusty ball. The original and this song are two completely different versions. The original is full of youthful hopes, dreams and vigor... This version is a reflection of all of those hopes and dreams 45+ years later, Gary's voice echoing a long life of dreams realized and dreams crushed... I listen to both versions as a daily affirmation...

I now have a studio, and am actually selling some of my pieces...if nothing sells, oh well. I have given my self permission to just be. I live with chronic pain, and this medium along with some great music when I paint totally helps me forget not just the physical pain, but the emotional nagging pain that could wear me down if I let it. If nothing else, may I suggest you watch Sara Taylor do a painting or two...

It is so touching to share this experience with a young woman generations apart from me Now let's do "A Salty Dog" from this same concert. I don't care if any of you geezers think I'm a pansy, or a puffier, I will cry when I hear these beloved old tunes. Passion is not weakness. It is rather the fuel that fires up the physical aspect of love. If there is a lovely woman about my age who also responds passionately to music, connect, but only if you like slow dancing. Cheers.

The miller's tale was a disreputable story about 2 men who tried to seduce a married woman and got noplace. It ties in with this song about a man who approaches a girl and gets turned down. Her face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale = she ghosted him.

Amazingly, this was the debut 45 single by Procol Harum in May of 1967. It became # 1 with a bullet in the UK and stayed there for SIX WEEKS! It sold over ten million copies and was played throughout the Summer of Love. Playing with the Denmark Orchestra in 2006, this arrangement, bolstered by Brooker's magnificent vocal, takes on an almost transcendental feeling.

‘Whiter Shade Of Pale’ was Procol Harum’s big radio hit, so it’s the one everyone reacts to - but in this same concert they do their ‘Conquistador’ which I count to be a superior song to ‘Whiter Shade Of Pale’ . . . it’s just more passionate and far more rousing. If you can find their performance of ‘Conquistador’ from The British Rock Symphony online (I can’t other than on the DVD itself) you should watch/listen to that (this Danish performance is about as good, but the British performance has Zac Starkey, Ringo’s son, on drums and he lifts the song to higher realms). Seriously, if you liked ‘Whiter Shade Of Pale’ you ought to love ‘Conquistador’ - here’s a link to the song from this Danish show ~ kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpOqp8yQ1qeso3U.html

I cannot count the times I have sang "Conquistador" while driving around in traffic as a young lad. No one stared at me, but maybe they instinctually avoided eye contact with the muscled guy that was 6' 3" tall. The fact I tended to make bizarre statements for fun have enhanced this effect. Now I am an old man driving around, making bizarre statements for the fun of it. But these songs were my favorites for a very long time.

Gary Brooker had been working on melody inspired by classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach, saying: “Throughout 1966 I had followed with interest the work of the Jacques Loussier Trio and the Swingle Singers, who had made an art of adapting Bach pieces. Air On A G String was the starting point but the rest was invention, with constant reference to Bach-like breaks and atmosphere.” Paul McCartney who also loved Bach said he wished he had composed this song.

I just watched a video which went into Bach's influence. It is generally known that Mendelssohn revived Bach's reputation after about 80 years of neglect. But it turns out that all the major composers knew and were obsessed with Bach--Mozart and Beethoven to begin with, Mendelssohn, Chopin, etc. The general public, however, thought of Bach as "teaching music" because of the two and three part inventions and the Well-Tempered Clavier. They weren't aware of his more ambitious pieces. If you like Bach, check out Murray Perahia playing the D Major Brandenburg Concerto. It's on KZfaq, and it's really amazing.

For those of you who are wondering about the meaning of the song... you need to find the version which includes all 4 verses. He only ever recorded 2 of them, and it's the other 2 that make sense of them. So why didn't he record all of them? Well the video of his live concert with all 4 verses is 9 minutes long. Maybe he'll finally record the complete song on a greatest hits album one day. Anyway, the story takes place on a ship at sea, during a wild party. He has his sights set on a girl who's part of the group, and she's so drunk that with the ship going up and down, she's getting sea-sick and she turns a whiter shade of pale. Anyway, he won't take no for an answer (wouldn't let her be a Vestal virgin), and she eventually warms up to him and even tries to play a fantasy game of sorts with him but he's too literal or drunk to understand (3rd verse). He realizes his "faux pas" and changes his tune, and she gives in to his charm and he gets what he was after (4th verse). Now you know... the rest of the story!
