Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on KZfaq, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on KZfaq. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on KZfaq, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.

This song was so important that by 1970 it was being taught in High School English classes. Most of their songs, either together or apart, are gems of rare quality. But lookit. At that time, during the late 60s and early 70s, there were two streams of music predominating, and the progressive and fusion music weighted more heavily on the music part, while the more folks-inspired music, like Simon, Dylan, Lightfoot, Baez, Mitchell...were more heavily on the lyrics, or message. There was a war to end. Words can help. As then, so now.

Great song. The message of this song is just as relevant today as when it was written. My interpretation is that people hear a warning/truth, but they chose to ignore it to stay in their comfort zone. 🖖❤

This was their first radio hit and it was pretty massive at the time. You have to remember, in those days all pop/rock music was top 40, so there was a big mix of genres. It was a great time to grow up!

The first time I noticed Simon and Garfunkel. I really liked the music in The Graduate when I was a little kid. Even then I could tell these guys were musical geniuses and great poets. A side note- sartorial experts remarked on Dustin Hoffman's impeccable wardrobe. The entire movie displays this. That corduroy sports jacket is perfect. And the other clothes put with it are exactly what smart casual should be.

To me this song is about so many people that "ignore or walk away or are silent" in the face of atrocities happening right in front of them, ignoring "the obvious". There's a quote from Albert Einstein that goes something like this>"It is those that remain silent and do nothing in the face of horrific atrocities, that are the most dangerous, not the ones committing them"..

It's great to watch your generation listen to songs that are 60 years old and from my generation. I was in my 20s when this came out, and it still remains a favorite due to the memories of the time, friends, and our feelings. Thank you for playing these old tunes from Simon & Garfunkel, Donovan, etc. It's like being in a time machine and slipping back to another place and time. Great job, as always - you're the best.

Such a powerful song and I do like both versions for sure. It's been said that the Paul Simon and Garfunkel Song an early warning, a shot across the bow to try to wake people up. And that the Disturbed version decades later is about the anger being felt all these decades later because the warning has not been heeded.

The original song was recorded in 1964 on the "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." LP. In 1966 producer Tom Wilson took the original vocals and put them in front of some session players in a new electrified version which became a big hit.

That's right. I think they were in England when their producer added the studio musicians. At first they were angry he had taken such liberties with the song but when it went to the top of the charts they couldn't argue with success. As they recorded more folk rock songs they became musical heavyweights and that eventually led to them having more creative control so it was a win/win for everyone.

This 'electric' version ended up being the gateway to a long and successful career for Paul Simon. It was initially released an acoustic song in October 1964 and was included on their debut album, Wednesday Morning 3 AM. Sales of that LP were dismal, selling only 3,000 copies the month it was released. As a result, it led the duo to part ways; Simon traveled to London to pursue his music ambitions while Garfunkel remained in NY to continue his studies at Columbia University. In the interim, their producer, Tom Wilson, took the initiative of remixing the original (unbeknownst to either Simon or Garfunkel at the time), adding overdubs of an electric guitar and drums. It was reissued in September 1965 and the song became one of the top selling singles in early November and eventually reached #1 in the charts nationwide by the first week of January 1966. Upon the success of the new release, the duo were hastily reunited at the request of the record company to record their follow-up LP, Sounds of Silence, which was comprised mostly of material Simon had written and recorded for a solo album while living abroad. What a remarkable turn of events that paved the path for one of the most celebrated musical icons of a generation.

Even though no one has actually done this the original sounds like a warning sung gently and the cover sounds like it condemns all for not heeding that warning. Once again, you've chosen a great song to react to. Whoever advises you is doing a great job! And your reactions are very thoughtful and full ofv love for music and its makers. So I urge you to hear "El Condor Pasa" and "Scarborough Fair/Canticle," among countless great songs they did. The first is a traditional Inca tune, hauntingly beautiful, and the second is a very old English (probably Celtic at first) song in a fugue with a clever counterpoint.

Scarborough Fair is a version of Child Ballad #2, "The Elfin Knight." It's well worth looking up what the Child Ballads are. The original Elfin Knight dates to before 1674; "Scarborough Fair" is a more recent re-telling, pre-dating 1947 but origin is ultimately unclear. "Canticle," the counter-melody penned by Simon, is an anti-war statement.

It took a while ~ but I found this ~ “One of the biggest hang-ups we have today is the inability of people to communicate, not only on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level as well. So you have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate. It’s called, “The Sound of Silence”. - Paul Simon 1966 ~ ~ ~ Just my own observation ~ some things just don't seem to change; people still have this issue today. Communication is not easy.

A fun S&G song you might enjoy is "Cecilia" from their final album, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." It is up-tempo, with great harmonies and fun percussion. It is often mistaken for a love song, but Simon relates that at heart it's a complaint to his muse, when his ability to write songs had dried up. (St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music; he mentions her again in the song "The Coast" on the album "Rhythm of the Saints".)

I hear it as an attack on shallow consumerism. Also people locked in their own small world's, not engaging with the bigger issues. This album started as an acoustic set, but the record company rocked it up, adding drums and electric guitars. Paul wasn't too happy about that, but the public loved it. There are a lot of good tracks on this album, I like Kathy's Song, + the closing track, I am a rock is a strong one.. Homeward Bound. The counterbalanced pair, Richard Corey, and Most peculiar man, are hard hitting too. Perhaps you can listen to some from the Scarborough Fair album, lot of good stuff on there, or America.

Herman Hesse was a German existentialist writer whose works were popular with American youth in the 60s and 70s, often read in college. He wrote about alienation and the kinds of themes expressed in this song. I think some of the imagery in the song is taken from Hesse’s Steppenwolf, which is where the band of that name got it.

Pure poetry. Succeeded only by the sweet harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel. To overanalyze the message is to ruin its impact. Some things are meant for the soul not the intellect. Much of Paul Simon's lyrics fit that bill. Like all great writers he avoids being too specific when asked to dissect his songs... Knowing that the true meaning is as much the currency of the listener as it is to him. My next favorite song of theirs is "Scarborough Fair". The harmonies are off the charts. Give it a listen. "And the sign said, " The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls" And whispered in the sounds of silence"

It's pretty self explanatory, and of course it's better than Disturbed's cover. It's about alienation, commercialism, all the sins of modern society. You really need to listen to all 5 of their studio albums in chronological order to see the exponential growth in Simon's skills as a lyricist, composer, and producer.

When I first heard this in 1970 at age 13, the impression I got was how people were getting so self absorbed, that they were lost in their own thoughts, even in a crowd. Fifty-plus years later, you see a half dozen people at lunch and everyone is on their phone, texting each other across the table... lost in “the sounds of silence”. Just an opinion...

This original is the best version and delivers Paul’s message exactly how it was meant to be delivered, with sadness that society no longer knows how to properly communicate in a meaningful way any more. Disturbed’s version is one of anger.

This is not the original version. The acoustic (I like better) version was on an earlier album.
