They were a once-of-a-generation duo. They would have been classified as folk music. This was in the 1960s. The original is a warning, Disturbed's version is anger that the warning wasn't heeded. There are many songs to choose from, Bridge Over Troubled Water The Rock The Boxer Mrs. Robinson Homeward Bound Celia And much more.

Listen to the words. This song, like many folk songs, was a warning and wake up call to society and due to the calming music, people were more open to hearing the message. Remember this is the original writers and performers of the song so this is how they wanted to convey the message.

Art Garfunkel has a beautiful, angelic singing voice that really shines in their other music, and Paul Simon's lyrics and music are outstanding. Together, their sound was magical. They're both still alive and performing separately, but they no longer perform together as a group. If I had to pick one to go see, though, it would be Art Garfunkel, because of that beautiful voice. Paul Simon would be the one who I think you feel like he's talking the lyrics more than singing them. Art Garfunkel's voice is the higher pitched one. Their music is SO good, though, and you really can't go wrong with Simon and Garfunkel, whichever song you choose.

I always took S&G's version as more introspective. Since Paul Simon wrote this I believe that the intent was to make people aware of the issue and get them to think about it without anger and to look at themselves regarding it. Disturbed's version just made me think he was angry and was blaming everyone else. Of course, that is just how it made me feel - feel being the operative word there.

They are masters of meaningful songs. Garfunkel is a German-Jewish name. Paul Simon is a genius lyricist and musician. You must watch Simon's Graceland Tour of Africa in the times just as Apartheid was happening and he used African musicians and he was slammed to hell and back. You're young yet and have so much ahead to experience musically. I was in one of the opening acts when they performed in Coconut Grove in 1968. So I got to meet them, it's something I'll never forget

I love that you look up artists you don't know and try to put some context into your listening experience. A lot of times people experience music through the filter of the times and the personalities of the musicians and some artists are hard to grasp with just one song and I find that a lot of the time the more you understand the artists perspective the more you can appreciate what they make. Also the dark sound of the Disturbed version definitely takes it's cue from this song, the instrumentation here is more jaunty but the vocal melody has a dark undertone that I find equally haunting, just not as agressive.

This version (the original) was, in 1966, a breakthrough. The subject of the song - lack of communication - had never been addressed in popular music. They were a folk duo - acoustic guitars - and for them to be backed by electric guitars and drums was controversial. Bob Dylan was booed for doing this. The Disturbed version was 30 years later.

Simon and Garfunkel have a long list of amazing songs over just a few years. Their first album came out in 1964 and they broke up in 1970. Paul Simon went on to an incredible solo career. He won Grammies for Album of the Year twice as a solo artist. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a solo artist and with Simon and Garfunkel. He made Time magazine’s list of 100 People Who Shaped the World and Rolling Stone listed him and number 8 in the Top 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. He’s also a really funny guy. He’s been on SNL 14 times, both as a musical guest and as a host. You should definitely add his solo work to your list of songs to react to. For starters: Graceland Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes Kodachrome Still Crazy After All These Years 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover Slip Slidin’ Away Loves Me Like a Rock Hearts and Bones

I've seen some say S&G's is like a warning, but with hope. Disturbed's is an angry condemnation, for not heeding the warning. Yes, Garfunkel's voice is the high one. The "voice of an angel." Simon & Garfunkle played during a time of inner angst during the 1960s when the country was arguing about war and gender and race issues and fear of nuclear war as this abstract concept. They captured the loneliness of the soul of that culture when parents had started getting divorced and soldiers were coming home injured. Their first album was called Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M and if you have ever had thoughts that keep you awake at night, this song captures that. If you compare the culture Disturbed is growing up in, it is a serial killer and missing children and school shootings and it is in so many ways a darker culture. Their song reflects that.

Simon, when given the opportunity to listen to listen to Disturbed's version, commented that he would have loved to have been able to perform the song as Disturbed did. You should find a live version of this to really understand that they were singing about the same things and Disturbed contemporized it. This version is speeded up from how they usually performed it live (with just Paul Simon's guitar and no drums) and was recorded that way on the album. I don't know how to send you a link, but look for Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence - Madison Square Garden, NYC - 2009/10/29&30. The comment by Firefighter Chick is definitely true. The original (written by Paul Simon) is the warning and Disturbed's is showing that the warning wasn't heeded, but both had anger in them. I did see them live in my youth in '69, I think it was. They are now both 81.

JUST SUBSCRIBED. Love that you took the time to look up S&G bio. They are the GOATS of duos even more than the Righteous Brothers. They broke up in the early 70's and Paul continued and still continues to write some of the best songs ever written. Many consider Paul a lyrical and musical genius, on par with Bob Dylan. In the 60's S&G music was on the radio all the time. They reunited for one time only in the 80's for a free concert at Central Park in NYC and it is said there were over 500,000 in attendance! You were spot on and quite eloquently got your point across about the singers. Yes, Art's voice is like butter! PLEASE, when reacting to S&G react only to their studio versions of the songs. As you mentioned the instrumentals in their music is amazing with many varied instruments. When they performed live they could not include all the instruments that made the songs spectacular. Songs to listen to are BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER, THE BOXER, HOMEWARD BOUND, CECILIA Look forward to the next S&G you might also want to check out PENTATONIX a cappella version, mind blowing.

Simon & Garfunkel's version was done first - a long time ago. At that time, coming out of the prosperous and hopeful years after the end of the terrible World War II, Paul Simon was pointing out some of the problems with our society which were not obvious to many. He had to do it in a fairly gentle way, in order to get people to think about it. Many years later, all of these problems have been ignored. We see the result of this in the version by Disturbed, because now, many years later, the problems have reached a critical stage. Thus, the more "disturbing" version.

Before the Disturbed got to it, there was a significant cover of The Sound Of Silence by a goth-rock group called Awakening - besides slowing it down, they changed one chord, and thereby changed our view of the song somewhat. Again - you possibly saw AG before in the classic film BAD TIMING. With a name like that, somehow you'd guess he was from Long Island! Some more S&G songs worth reacting to - I Am A Rock / Hazy Shade Of Winter / A Poem On The Underground Wall / He Was My Brother / Sparrow / Richard Cory / The Dangling Conversation / America / their cover versions of The Blues Run The Game and The Sun Is Burning.

I'm familiar with both versions but the Simon and Garfunkel version is just beautiful.

Another fantastic song that had a cover that was totally different and equally amazing if not better than the original is I Will Always Love You written by Dolly Parton and covered by Whitney Houston. Comparing those back to back will blow your mind.

While I enjoy hearing you say gar-FUNK-el, it's GAR-funk-el. 🙂 They have tons and tons of songs. I absolutely LOVE their music. Of course I grew up on it, so that helps. This and Bridge Over Troubled Water might be my favorites, but there are bunches. Oh, and Hazy Shade of Winter. And I am a Rock. And... and... and...

I agree this one sounds much more happy or upbeat compared to the disturbed cover. Music truly can be interperated differently to everyone. Its creativity is a part of what makes them so great. Songs that get covered are a great example of that. They are occasionally played to the cover artists own tune. Another great example of a cover changing its tune from the original is hurt by Johnny Cash(originally done by nine inch nails). Another great duo band are the proclaimers most notably for the song "im gonna be" (I would walk 500 miles). The proclaimers are identical twins who work together as a duo. Very nice Jordan poster in the back btw.

It sounds more upbeat because this isn't the original, it's the awful version that was ruined by Phil Spector without Paul's permission.

The original album version was just acoustic guitar and vocals and has more of a haunting quality. The label insisted on adding electric guitars and drums for the single release. You should listen to the album version to hear the song as the artists intended.

Yes, yes, yes! The original is actually on their first album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. It was done acoustically which I prefer. Columbia saw the potential in the song and recorded electric guitar and drums over the original recording and rereleased it on a single and their second album. I like it too, and it did become a hit. But I love the original acoustic version.

You cannot usually beat the original (which this is ) and this is so much better than the one by the Disturbed.

Great reaction. I love this original! Simon and Garfunkel have a great catalogue that you should check out. I don’t like the disturbed version but Pentatonic does great cover of this song.

Simon and Garfunkel's version of "Sound of Silence" was a warning. Disturb's version of "Sound of Silence" is our present day reality. We are being SILENCED. It didn't have to be this way: IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. DON'T BE SILENCED. PRAY. THE WORD reverberates across reality.

"Boxer" is my favorite.. but for a feel good song "bridge over troubled water". I'd never listen to the disturbed version.. I don't want negatively in my life.

One thing about the disturbed version is it really attempted to create a dark vibe. I feel like Paul lets the lyrics do the talking for him and it’s plenty disturbing lol

Make sure when you listen to bridge over troubled water it’s the single, not the live performance. Big difference.

Madison Square gardens , they are older and do a slower version which is great. They had a half a million people there. Simon is the writer and guitar player. As you should know Garfuncle is the singer.

Because you've listened to several versions of this song, I will once again ask that you listen to Emiliana Torrini's version. It's closer to this one, and her voice really emphasizes the lyrics, and I can't really quantify why I love it, but it sound like young rebellion? It's so good.

I would also strongly recommend watching the Graduate. This song gives so much more emotion and understanding seeing Dustin Hoffman thinking about Katharine Ross
