Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

so sad.... tears swelling in my eyes. paul (simon) and art(garfunkel) you probably don't remember me, but you talked to me at ruby's cafe 1976. You guys changed my life. God bless you two. I'm know 78 with minor alztimerz and i fear my time is coming. I just wanted to comment on this performance. I love you guys - Wolf M. Marsh Edited April 3rd, 2020 Three years ago, I handed my grandfather my laptop to let him write one last message to Simon and Garfunkel. He had no idea that videos like this could be found on the internet, and he broke down in tears while he listened. This September he passed away after a four year battle with kidney failure, but he was very fortunate that his Alzheimer’s never progressed much further than when he posted this comment. He commented with the name Wolf M. Marsh. That is my name. I assume he said my name instead of his because he didn’t want his name circulating out of the internet, but I am so glad his story has become so well known to you all. The world would be such a better place if everyone on it was as kind and empathetic as the people replying beneath me. All the love on the planet to you folks, ~Wolf M. Marsh

everyone's time is coming but the heart felt words you wrote made me think.... Eventhough these guys will probably never read these comments and who knows what kind of impact the fans have on them,. Your message my friend, made me emotional enough to stop and comment on how beautifully you expressed a good many of our feelings. I simply adore S&G. I wish you well also. Thank you

Wolf Marsh I love those guys , too. I have all their albums on vinyl and CD's . I am 66 and don't know if I will make it to 78, I can only hope. There have been many things during my lifetime I have feared , only to look back in retrospect and realize that being afraid had been a waste of my time and energy. As a child , I was acutely aware of my mortality as to the point of lying awake at night in fear of not waking the next morning. I do not know how "normal" it is for a young child to have such an intense fear of the end of life , because I have never shared this with anyone. At 66 , I am much closer to "my time" than when I was 10 , yet my level of fear of that moment has decreased to the point of almost being non-existent. Of all the people I have loved during my lifetime , most of them are no longer here and I miss them. When "my time" is upon me , I know that I will be in good company, following in the footsteps of many good friends. Our time here grows shorter and shorter with the passing of each day , we do not have time to be afraid. Wolf , may GOD bless and keep us both.

I'm currently 19 and my dad passed away almost 2 months ago. We used to play and sing this song together, especially this version. His favourite verses were the ones added during this concert. Now I play the song on my own, knowing that he's probably singing somewhere along as well. Love you dad, wherever you may be. The boxer still remains.

Paul Simon wrote “The Boxer” about his struggles as a musician. In the last verse, Simon compares himself to a boxer. The boxer is a metaphor for Simon’s perseverance. 2:02 [Song Stories Matter]

OMG….after seeing this video I wanted to comment something. Decided I’d read a few first because I wanted me words do expel meanings from “days gone by”…and the I saw your comment. My friend you said it all…perfectly all. My heart literally skipped a beat. Your words projected back to those days in the early 70’s when I use to listen to S&G literally every single day. I’d throw an “8-track” into my car 8-track player, let the top down and cruise around listening to some of the greatest songs any artist ever wrote and produced. Their music is timeless and never grows old.

And the lyrics are meaningful word art/poetry. I was 15 when this came out. I was set to get my drivers license in September and my dad comes home one day and says we are moving to Germany. So I spent 6 months fully traumatized in my room listening to Paul and Art. I survived and I got really lucky with the Vietnam draft lottery. So this has profound meaning to me now as it did then.

Ironically, it was the harmonies of the Everly brothers than Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle admired that helped them develop their music. At this iconic performance in Central Park in NYC, they brought the EBs on stage. .then stood in the wings admiring them sing. THAT. . .was royalty.

It was good to see Garfunkel reach out and rub Paul’s back. Like, “ you did good brother. Look what we created with the songs you wrote”. I don’t know what came between these two men, but they can never deny that combined they were gold. And, I love Paul’s smile. I don’t think either of them aren’t fully aware of the mark on history this concert and their talents made.

"Paul Simon himself has suggested that the lyrics are largely autobiographical, written during a time when he felt he was being unfairly criticized: 'I think I was reading the Bible around that time. That's where I think phrases such as "workman's wages" came from, and "seeking out the poorer quarters". That was biblical. After weeks and weeks not moving from my room, then I went out and joined the Army. I left my family and home town, I was lonely and broken. 40 years latter I found my son, not living too far from my brother. I have contacted him, we have met and I knew he was my son by looking into his eyes. He is about to make me a Granddad, I am that poor boy no more.

@@karmicselling4252 Was just going to say the Everly Brothers, who were their role models and inspiration. There was another iconic NYC concert in the 80s that had far less attendance, but was every bit as poignant and memorable as S&G's 1981 Central Park concert. That was when the Everly Brothers played in Midwood Field, Brooklyn in 1987. They gave one of the most flawless performances I've ever seen. Their harmonies were incredible. S&G paid tribute to them by singing "Bye Bye Love" on their album.

Let me tell you how I envy you. September 19, 1981, I had just turned 21. I only saw the concert months later on TV, and all my life I've been saying I could have sold my soul to the Devil to have been there.

My father passed away last week at age 90. He was a champion amateur boxer and loved this song. He was a boxer and even moreso, a fighter. We played it at his funeral as he is truly "going home."

That little look he gives him at 2:50 is because of little mistake made by Art, and off-key singing the word "changes".

I’m 65, this is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I can think of. We of our age are blessed. We enjoyed the music of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. I do appreciate the music of today, I’m not fussy, beautiful music is timeless, but for me, our time presented the best you could hope for.

The Boxer” is a character study: a young man disappointed with the world leaves home while still a child, and tries not to draw much attention to himself, because he knows he will be accepted or at least ignored if he stays among “strangers” This song is about a melancholy adventure through life. The entire song is a metaphor about how life is a boxing match against not only the people fighting against us but also ourselves. All the cuts and marks the boxer carries are symbolic of all the times that life has tried to get him down, and even though he sometimes feels like giving up, he never will because he’s a fighter.

Agreed. Good deduction...or as Billy Joel sings in the song Angry Young Man: "I found that just surviving is a noble fight." Be it a fighter as you stated, or a surviver.
