He's a failed Championship manager who nobody wanted after he got Middlesbrough relegated. He sneaked into the FA as a nice man to keep the blazers hassle free but had no credentials to warrant the national job and loses every time he comes up against any half decent team or coach.

Southgate overachieved in 2018 in comparison to how England had been doing in tournaments since 1990 so I totally understand why he remained manager after that but he should have gone after Euro 2020, that was an open goal for England to finally win something and they lost largely thanks to him. 2022 was just typical England really, other managers have been fired for less. He's still manager because the FA LOVE him because he's their perfect manager: English, yes-man, conservative and loved by the pundits.

@@backupdancer3720 My point was that they hadn't reached a semi-final since 1990 and people couldn't look past that, hope had finally returned etc. I've said myself that the only top team Southgate's England has beaten in tournament play was an ageing and declining Germany at home in Euro 2020, another reason he should have gone after Euro 2020 and definitely after 2022

@2005Kam The World Cup was expanded to 32 teams in 1998, and the Euros expanded to 24 teams in 2016. Expansion has made it easier to top groups and avoid more higher-ranked teams in knockout rounds. That 1990 semi-final had more merit than 2018, as the tournament had better teams from group stage to final.

@@backupdancer3720 Well remember England got put out by Iceland in Euro 2016 and Wales got to the semi-finals so it doesn't always work out that way and I think it's great that smaller nations have a chance to compete at major tournaments. It gives them a chance to develop and establish themselves.

I mean what would you rather do?... Manager in a country where it's rained non-stop for 11 months and is miserable or work and live in somewhere like Spain where it has glorious weather, 2 bigger teams to manage, a much better standard of living for his family, better wages and more chance of winning in Europe!... I'd be amazed if we don't see him in Spain or similar and also amazed if he's not already had discussions and has something lined up, even before announcing that he was leaving!

I can’t see how people are even thinking that there is a chance for England to win this tournament. GS is not going to win a major tournament for England with or without an easy route. I would argue that an easy draw is bad for England because he could reach to advance stages but ultimately he will lose and people will say let give him another chance because they did well in this tournament.

Agreed, whatever happens he will depart and take his odd, quirky traits with him. Just take this tournament - he leaves behind Grealish one of the few players we have who can take defenders on and beat them, and our inability to overcome packed defences cries out for such a player, but he does take another player, Shaw, who was injured already and for whom this has been a recuperation break. It's not if, but more how or what, he does, to advertise his odd ways, but they have yielded damn all to suggest they are anything but failed ideas and we simply don't need a footballing eccentric.

Southgate can't win either way. If he looses, he's a failure. If he wins they will just say, it not that big to of an achievement considering the squad he has. Impossible position he is in. He still will not get respected as a good coach if he wins. Guarantee it.
